“It's in the details”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

This hotel is what you would expect of a Marriott - goods rooms, comfortable beds, good restaurants, free wifi (perhaps because I am a rewards member), pleasant staff and so on.

But it is details that make or break a stay. Check-in was a pain. Even though I checked in at 430pm my "guaranteed" room type was not available. I had booked a King bed smoking room and was only offered a twin-bedded non-smoking room. After much unnecessary arguing we compromised on a King Bed non-smoking. A request to know what "guaranteed" meant was ignored or perhaps just not understood.

After check in I needed to top up my local phone - on the XL network - one of the country's largest networks. I went to the business centre to do this. I was told this was a service they normally provided but they had "run out" of top up cards. I was directed to a nearby building to do it. Not much fun walking around Jakarta.

It was, however, raining. I was told I could get an umbrella from the concierge desk, which is not in the hotel building but at the front of the driveway where the security checks are by the road. I went there but the umbrellas had also "run out." I was told, without a trace of humour, that this situation only happens when it rains. Apparently if you need an umbrella on a sunny day - they can provide it no problem.

The concierge did state there was an umbrella in my room. So I returned to the 18th floor but no - there was no umbrella in the room. So I went back downstairs and simply got wet.

Returned sodden and decided to have a glass of wine in the room. A decent drop of red in the minibar? Yes - a half bottle of an Italian red that will do just fine. A corkscrew? No chance. A call to the "At your Service" button could shed no light on whether there was meant to be a cork screw in the room - the operator had no idea. After waiting about 20 minutes a further call to the "At your Service" to emphasize that this was not a generic question, and since there wasn't a corkscrew in the room I would like one. It arrived about another 30 minutes later by which time I had given up on the wine and popped a couple of tins of beer instead.

Details, details, details. Reception not prepared. Business centre not prepared. Concierge not prepared. Items missing from room and staff no idea what is and is not in the room.

So decent rooms but lacking attention to details.

JW Marriott in Jakarta follow the other Marriott hotel I have been staying at - over average! For this specific hotel I found the staff very friendly and after just a while I find myself like at home. The transport arrangements that is needed in Jakarta, was easy to get and ther was always a car available for you when going out.

The room is clean and large - water by complementary, so also the internet (maybe based on my Marriott membership?)

The breakfast buff'e and service is excellent, with a great choice from different parts of Asia - my favorite is always the egg chef had excellent variation to choose from.

As always, try to get high up in the building, it was no construction work ongoing and outside it is a small park, so even if you come a little bit lower it should be quiet.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights and found the hotel to be top notch with only a few minor niggles. I booked through Expedia and got a decent price of $550 for three nights. For a 5 star hotel in Jakarta with breakfast that's good. They offered to join us to their hotel chains card system which then gave us free internet - saves $16 a day - just do it! They also offered the executive service at a discount but as we were going out a lot we didn't bother.

Yes the entrance involves a fair bit of security (xrays, metal dectators and sniffer dogs) but it doesn't slow you down unless you in a crowd. All the staff we met were well trained and very polite. Rooms are large and the beds are really comfortable. We really enjoyed the breakfast spread and covers the entire range of tastes with really good coffee made to order. Don't miss it!

Our only niggle was the iron not seeming to work but I found out it was just the plug (actually three of them) so perhaps they need them checked. The location is quite central for Jakarta. Will take you between 45 - 90 mins from the airport in traffic. Always take the toll roads to and from. The area around it is not that exciting. The usuall mega malls are close by and so is Lowey Restaurant - but the food IMHO is not that good. There is a Starbucks there as well if you need it and the local supermarket is very well stocked and quite 'reasonably priced by western standards.

Overall if you get a good price on this place then take it.

Stayed at this hotel for a conference. Very good and courteous service. Wonderful breakfast in the morning, great variety from Chinese, Korean, Japanaese, Indonesian, Indian, Western items as well (with rare pork bacon and sausage in this country), impossible to try even half of the them. The egg station offers all choice of egg dishes and the dish will be sent to the table after order, great noodle station and juice station as well. The room is spacious and clean with great amenities as well as a huge bathroom. A truly five star hotel in the city.

It would be hard to believe that there is a finer hotel anywhere in Jakarta. The Jakarta JW Marriott is easily the finest hotel I have stayed at during my extended travels for work and pleasure over the past few years.

The rooms are grand with granite, stone and glass bathrooms that would be the envy of royalty

The executive lounge is outstanding. Also the breakfast downstairs in the restaurant is absolutely huge with multiple stations including extensive bake goods, a fresh juice bar, pancake/waffle station, and an egg/omelet station.

Room Tip: The executive floor rooms are really amazing!

I am a fan of 5 star hotel chain, especially American brand. I trust them.

The good: nice comfortable bed, awesome upgrade room available, clean and superb gym experience, breakfast could be better.

The bad: freakin hairs, nails that wasn't mine on the carpet.
I order simple fried rice and marinated chicken something for room service. My expectation was like above and beyond, yet what came out was very very disappointing experience, fried rice taste nothing like a fried rice supposed to be, Chinese restaurant in downtown Jakarta can do better than that. The Satay they put on sides taste not good. I was expecting a renowned chef style kind of food. It just doesn't make sense, since their breakfast was really good. The guy who cleaned up the dishes, didn't wipe the table and left all the rice and water stain on my coffee table.
Another thing was the room amenities, the glasses and cups was dirty, many things were missing, tissue, shampoo, soaps, towels and slippers.

The ugly: I paid what i have to pay, and suddenly there was lots of extra charges, every 2 am they charge me percentage of service charge and tax, I ask them why? Yet they can not explain, i stayed for 2 nights and both night I got 3 charges.

I wish to come back, and i had hope for them, but maybe not so soon.

Room Tip: Make sure to check what you paid for.

Though it was a short stay, did not got much chance to explore Jakarta due to work load, but enjoyed my stay in Marriott. Entry to the hotel was very confusing as so much of checking is involved, but later came to know the exact reason of so much security. Hotel employees are very helpful. In the 1st day itself, Microsim got stuck in my Iphone. Got lot of help from hotel employees to get it resolved. Restaurant in hotel (Sailendra) is really awesome, huge collection of food in buffet. It s really tempting, but unfortunately, can not have dinner continuously 7 days due to stomach limitation :) Rooms are clean and specious. Alameda Spa & Health Club both services i availed. If time permits, i would suggest try Indonesian spa, for me it was very relaxing after continuous 5 stressful day. Blue Martini is little disappointing becaz of less young crowd.

Room Tip: Try to take higher floor room (obviously smoking room), if it is a corner room of the floor, you wil...
