“Lovely set up but noisy at night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013 via mobile

Beautiful setting and bungalows a great start for a peaceful holiday. However the early morning noises from animals makes it very difficult to stay asleep past sun rise. I am a good sleeper and can sleep through most things but this is like a full orchestra dogs barking etc

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

We booked as part of a large wedding group, booking probably more than 75% of the resort for over a week. Arrived after midnight where the reception had already closed, the security guard was alert and knew of our arrival promptly taking us to our room, carrying our bags and wishing us a good stay. No key was provided for the room – we retrieved a key from reception in the morning.
Several rooms are differently laid out. We booked a Super Deluxe room (upstairs room in Villa Gajah) as suggested to us by management and another Stand Bungalow for our parents. In fact, the standard bungalow was more spacious inside, although with an outdoor bathroom. We chose the Super Deluxe as we were informed that this type has two double beds for us and our two children. In fact, the standard bungalow also has two double sized beds - which we were not informed of. We could easily have just booked two standard bungalows and saved on costs.
Our group, being a wedding party, grouped together a lot around the pool and utilized the facilities every day, spending large amounts of cash on food and beverages. One day 1 the kitchen ran out of pizza’s – therefore kids were all disappointed. Day 2 they ran out of cheese for the pizzas. Many other items were in/out of stock over the week we stayed there, including ice. The pool turned green after Day 3/4 - obviously from excessive use by this large party. On departure we are not sure if anything had been done to fix the water – but it seems like they must have put some kind of chemicals in eventually as one of our kids who has a sensitive skin broke out in rashes all over his body after a swim.
The general quality of the food was average – but can be improved in many areas, including variety or more specials. After one week the menu is boring. French fries tasted rancid as oil was obviously old. Pizza (when in stock) was good but limited choices of toppings. Burger was average. Pasta although overcooked was tasty – but the penne arrabiata which is supposed to be hot using chillies – used large red pepper so not hot at all. F&B prices are reasonable to international standards but on the higher side for Bali standards considering the quality. Overall – the F&B can be seriously improved which would encourage guests to stay in the resort more, instead of seeking better F&B alternatives.
Rooms have many problems and in need of ongoing general maintenance. Most AirCons cannot cope with the heat outside or needed maintenance – needs addressing. The groom’s toilet did not work for 3 days, resulting in him having to use other rooms toilet and request a room change – but resort was full. Then, the resort arranged for a sewerage truck to come clean out the soak pits. Well, this happened early morning, resulting is the stench of sewerage across the resort, unbearable in the rooms – so we went for breakfast which did not help either as the stench covered the resort for the rest of the day.
Bedding is changed daily and room cleaned quite well – although my wife and I got very badly bitten by bed bugs. Again, as resort was full we did not bother to complain. We did remove the 4 scatter cushions from the bed and place them outside in the sun – but everyday the cleaners returned them to the beds – without changing the covers. The mosquito nets are also filthy and were never changed the whole week there, seems like they don’t get changed ever. This is a general problem in hotels & resorts where scatter cushions, mosquito nets etc. go days/weeks/months without having the cover changed with hundreds of guests using them. We did mention this to the Management on check-out after we paid the bill. We received a sincere apology but we do hope that something is done about it as two other rooms had similar problems with bed bugs bites all over them.

Staff are great – as they are in Bali in general but Management need to engage into the little details and make the changes – the resort has a GREAT location well laid out with HUGE potential.

Room Tip: Standard Bungalows are just fine and spacious - other more expensive room types do not provide a sig...

Amicalement,

Karl

I'm surprised by a couple reviews I just read. My family and I have visited La Joya 2 years running and are booking at the moment for next year. Everyone in the family surfs (except poor mum) so the place is a paradise to us. The staff are amazing, the bungalows are delightful and air conditioned, the grounds are kept immaculately and the swimming pools are big and plentiful. I enjoyed the restaurant and some of the local warungs are great as well, you just have to talk to the locals to know where they are. No it's not Kuta, thank god! The waves are so special on so many levels, you just have to surf them. The Misses loves the place as well and enjoys waiting in one of the beach warungs wiyh a cold Bintang waiting for us when we get out of the surf and then up to resort for a feed or a swim in the pool. Heaven is what I call it. Thank you La Joya.

Room Tip: Go the Deluxe bungalows.

I went to this resort with some girlfriends. We arrived without a booking in the low season and got a room to share with breakfast for a great price (us$125 ish) The grounds are amazing. Two huge pools, seriously beautiful. The restaurant is lovely for all your meals. there is also cheap and tasty warungs at the base of the cliff. Take the stairs down and stay all day. We all surfed and swam each day. Yes, there are two big dogs that love to swim in the pools, but...thats my only complaint.

Room Tip: all rooms are lovely and private.

Beautiful grounds, great staff, old and in need of renovation everything else. If your bungalow is anywhere near the road you won't get more than an hour or two of shut eye. This is not the typical rooster crowing of bali. Balangan beach is gorgeous and best Indonesian breakfast I had. Great, good, and bad all rolled together

After arriving from the airport late at night we were greeted warmly and made to feel welcome. The both pools are lovely and it is nice to be able to change locations.
The restaurant had good food on the slightly expensive side.
La Joya was very close to the beach and without too many stairs, great surf for my husband.

Throughout our stay the staff were very helpful and arranged a baby sitter for us on several occasions. The sitter was very attentive and sat at the cots side throughout the evening until our return. Even after we changed accommodation when I recontacted La Joya to get the babysitters details they went out of their way to assist me in arranging a sitter which was very considerate given we were no longer staying with them.

There are late night noises so do bring earplugs to block out the crowing but as others have stated this is all a part of the Bali experience and occurs in many locations.

All in all a lovely place to spend the first 4 nights of our holiday.

We had 5 days at these very relaxing bungalows above Balangan Beach. We really liked it even though the bungalow we were in was old. The restaurant was really nice overlooking the pool and a fantastic view, food was very good. The top pool was my favourite for swimming mainly because most people were at the restaurant pool and after a few hours down at beach I found this area to be most relaxing. Be prepared for barking dogs and roosters, bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper or request bungalow away from road. Personally I think this is all part of being in Bali!!
My husband surfs so this was great for him.

Room Tip: Try for a bungalow in middle near the top pool
