“Lovely Tibetan-style hotel, but no central heating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I stayed here for 5 nights in December. The hotel itself is lovely - nestled in the heart of the Barkhor (old town), beautiful Tibetan-style rooms arranged around a courtyard, incense burning every morning, and friendly, helpful staff. I thought the bed was fine, too. The restaurant was closed due to renovations so I can't say anything about that. Breakfast was pretty basic fare (I had butter tea and tsampa every morning and loved it). I would recommend this hotel.... but maybe not in winter. My room was freezing! The shower had hot water (after leaving it running for about 10 minutes) but the sink had none, not until the last day at least. However the staff put an extra heater into my room when I asked.

Room Tip: I think the 01 rooms are quieter, since they face out onto government offices that aren't occupi...

Real authentic but too cold in the room. The heater was not strong enough to heat up the room. The water heater for shower took about 10 minutes to heat up. There was this "burning wood" smell once you stepped out of the room. Don't think it is healthy to breath in such air for long period of time. Preferred to quickly enter room and shut the door. I find the bed condition acceptable. The breakfast was below average. The toasts were burnt. We asked for hard boiled eggs so that we could take them with us since we have to catch our flights. Despite explaining in Chinese, the staff still served us sunny-side-up. However, the staffs were helpful except that they found it a challenge if you asked for something out of their routine tasks such as having hard boiled eggs.

Hotel Shambhala Palace
The best choice in Lhasa ! The hotel is in a very nice Tibetan style but with a good level of comfort. It is perfectly located in the center of the old Lhasa close to the Jokhang temple and allows to feel the true deep spirit of Lhasa. Excellent

Room Tip: All rooms are in a faboulos traditional tibet style. If possible, ask for rooms at first or upper fl...

I would really like to give the Shambhala Palace a higher rating. The ambience is wonderful, the staff are very helpful, the restaurant is good, the room is spacious but there is one big flaw. The bed is rock hard. I realise that beds are hard in China however we spent five weeks in China including ten days in Tibet and there wasn't one bed that came close to being as hard as the bed we had in the Shambhala Palace! Talk about sore hips in the mornings!
The other slight negative was you had to wait many minutes before the water ran hot.
So if you don't mind really hard beds (and a wait for hot water), this is the place for you.

We love this Tibetan renovated old hotel. The colours and furnishings are very authentic. It has hot water-you just have to wait a bit and a good heater for the room. Staff are helpful, and there's a lovely sunny roof where you can catch the sun in the daytime. Definately recommend this

Room Tip: We had a room at the top, steep stairs, difficult with heavy bags, although the staff helped, but th...

Stayed here for six nights like n total during our stay in Tibet. It was booked by our tour company (Road to Tibet which were fantastic) and were very pleased. Rooms are authentic and definitely not sterile! Space heaters are provided (a must in October) and the hot water does take a while to get to the tap but the room itself, the location and the staff more than compensate. Included breakfast is good and the dining area very comfortable (but wear a coat in colder weather)
A very good choice for someone who wants to start and end their trip with a feel of the real Tibet.

We booked our guided tour of Lhasa through Tibet Highland Tours (Small Tenzin) and spent our first 4 nights here. It was tremendous, clean and very safe! The staff were amazing, food was excellent and it was so close to the things we wanted to see and for walking around.

Roof top view of the Potala Palace was stunning. We had just come off the Train from Chengdu China to Lhasa Tibet/China and were picked up, dropped off and ensured that everything met our expectations. I would stay here again and highly recommend this hotel. Breakfast menu was great too!

If you connect with Tibet Highland Tours - make sure you ask for Jampa as a tour guide and Tashi as the driver - they were amazing!

Room Tip: I stayed in room #305 and my friends were in #203. Breakfast is served on the 4th floor and the port...
