“Can't beat the view (the service was pretty good too!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013 via mobile

Just came back from a two day trip at the St Regis and I can't help myself from jotting this down. Still reeling with excitement to go to sleep.

Location: a 5 minute walk from the city mosque and Tibetan Handicraft Center (worth a visit to support the local craftsmen), then another 5 minutes to the Jokhor Temple and the never ending wave of pilgrims. Potala Palace is just 10 minutes by car.

View: we insisted on a Potala Palace view room. And boy was it worth it. The structure is just breathtakingly beautiful. The only other building that stunned me as much was the Taj Mahal. As with the Taj, the Potala is to be appreciated at dawn, at dusk, at night, in broad daylight... and the only way you can get this full spectrum is to stay in a room with the view. Trust me, nothing beats waking up in the morning and seeing it shrouded in mist, or getting out of the shower and catching a glimpse of it at the magic hour!

Service: I emailed the hotel beforehand to tell them this trip was to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. So upon arrival we found the room decked with rose petals, a bouquet of red roses sitting in the living room, and our dinner at the western restaurant was also decorated with extra flowers. Antony, our butler, tried his best to keep us pampered. Green tea was served when we wanted, with delicious brownies and cheese cake and biscuits. When I complained that the temperature in the room was a bit toasty, he dashed in and opened the window to air the room. He gave shopping and restaurant recommendations... I can't think of a time when service was needed and wasn't delivered straight away and with a smile.

Food: perhaps my only small complaint is the breakfast buffet (rather limited options) but dinner was fine; just happy to have such crisp romaine lettuce for my Caesar salad. The food at the Chinese restaurant was great but a little pricey.

Spa: it is located in a standalone building across from the main building, thus makes it a bit difficult to just hop over in flimsy gym clothes with freezing temperature outside. The pool looks spectacular, but the attendant told us the heating wasn't working so the water was around 20 degrees instead of the usual 28, a bit too chilly for a dip (swim was out of the question given the altitude). The gym was under renovation, though with the altitude I wouldn't brave the treadmill or any weights....

In the end, all I want to say is a big THANK YOU to Antony and the staff of St Regis Lhasa for making this a most memorable wedding anniversary for my wife and me!

The hotel is very nice. The room is spacious and service is generally good. Needless to say that the room is very clean and makes you feel very good after a long day walking around the city. It has an extremely good Chinese restaurant. Very impressed with that restaurant. The Shangri-La Hotel will be built soon so would be interesting to compare those two. However, at this time, this is the only place to stay if you can afford it.

This is the best hotel in Lhasa. It is very nice physically but the service is spotty. No Tibet nationals work at the facility for the most part. This is a Chinese run hotel and they don't really get service. The food was good but generally the same buffet day and night. The wine is very expensive but there is really no alternative. The Spa was clean and inviting but the messages were weak and expensive $100+. The location is excellent and the views are something to treasure.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that looks out toward the mountains

The Hotel is probably the best in town, but I was told there are more 5stars in construction.
Then managment will need to care a bit more for the details, one can expect in St. Regis and given the price.

The two (out of five) points are because expectations are high, as high as the price.
I paid (low season) 1300 rmb w/o breakfast, around 1600 incl. bf., ~3.000 as in highseason would be too expensive.

Of course the rooms are quite nice, pretty big, but it is the details, management is encouraged to have a better look for.
E.g. the battery of the remote was close to dead, coffee-machine was missing and tea/coffee not refilled, carpet was not really cleaned, predecessor in room took all pens, papers and envellopes, no refill on that either ....
and why having a tv-station-list in first place if tv is programmed very different?

+ 10 min walk to downtown
+ rooms are quite nice and pretty big
- open bathroom
- fruits-table: five cherry-tomatoes and a small cucumber
- (western) breakfast was poor, esp. given the price, so little cold cut and cheese, bread was very dry, just two kinds of fruits, one kind of yoghurt, no muesli, cappuccino was good, espresso very bad ....
+ room was warm
- aircon was pretty loud
- internet-access was a disaster, but that might be out of control by the hotel
+ staff very FRIENDLY and HELPFULL

Room Tip: I guess the 111x rooms have access to what is called the lake, a small pond in a garden area, as 211...

We liked the hotel very much. We stayed twice and for 5 nights. The food was very good, particularly at the Chinese restaurant. The service is not bad, though it was patchy. Some staff are good and others need training. This is the only 5 star hotel we would consider staying in Lhasa but Shangri-la is opening the hotel very soon so would be interesting to see the competition. The only problem we had was that we were bitten by bed bugs in both occasions. That is not acceptable for 5 stars St Regis.

Room Tip: Try to get rooms facing the courtyard. We were putting into a room facing outside which they got so...

I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions and can thoroughly recommend it as probably the best hotel in Lhasa. On my last visit the manager went above and beyond his duty by helping me with a friend who suffered from acute mountain sickness when we were quite a long way from Lhasa. I am grateful for the extra care afforded us. Rooms are excellent, food very good, service a bit amateurish at times but very willing.

Our family, including 3 kids, truly enjoyed our time at the St. Regis Lhasa. Our rooms had a view of the Potala Palace, and it was fantastic to see it all times of the day from sunrise to night when it is lit up. Even though we were in the main building, it still felt like a long walk to the restaurants as we were suffering the effects of altitude sickness.

We had 2 rooms, 1 of them with an extra rollaway bed, in order to accommodate all 5 of us. The rooms themselves were quite spacious with a study nook that could be closed off with drapes if one person wants to work at the desk while the other sleeps. Note that the roomy bathroom is only separated from the bedroom by sliding wooden panels with a grid design that does not provide 100% privacy. This necessitated the family splitting up with boys in 1 room and girls in the other as my boys are too old to see their mom getting out of the shower. Room amenities included a BOSE iPhone dock and Oxygen canisters (US$6 each) in the minibar. We ended up needing the oxygen and were happy to have them on hand. Other reviews led me to expect heated bathroom floors but I could not figure out how to get ours to turn on. The bedroom is well heated, and we actually had to turn off the heater at night as it was a little too toasty for us.

The large pool is in the Spa. This is not mentioned in their in-hotel literature or signage. The spa is in the building directly across from the main building which made other signs at the Main Building directing us to Level 6 confusing.

The food itself is fantastic. The breakfast buffet at Social has a lot of variety of both Western and Asian dishes. The dinner buffet is excellent, too, although you also have the option of dining a la carte if the buffet price is too dear. They also have a Kids Menu. One night, we had the set dinner at the Tibetan restaurant. We were the only ones there despite Social being almost completely full. The Tibetan restaurant serves what I would call nouveau Tibetan cuisine as that I imagine that it is much fancier than what the locals eat. They permitted my children to order off the Social Kids Menu. We did not dine outside the hotel as the long walk from the room to the in-house restaurants was all we could handle.

My 8 year old daughter was especially hard hit with altitude sickness and was lethargic the entire time. She could not go sightseeing. The hotel's close proximity to Potala Palace and Jokhor Temple enabled my husband and I to take turns staying with her while the other went out touring.

There were no specific kid activities. In fact, my children were the only kids at the hotel as far as I could see. The fitness room is comprised of one treadmill.
