Just came back from a two day trip at the St Regis and I can't help myself from jotting this down. Still reeling with excitement to go to sleep.
Location: a 5 minute walk from the city mosque and Tibetan Handicraft Center (worth a visit to support the local craftsmen), then another 5 minutes to the Jokhor Temple and the never ending wave of pilgrims. Potala Palace is just 10 minutes by car.
View: we insisted on a Potala Palace view room. And boy was it worth it. The structure is just breathtakingly beautiful. The only other building that stunned me as much was the Taj Mahal. As with the Taj, the Potala is to be appreciated at dawn, at dusk, at night, in broad daylight... and the only way you can get this full spectrum is to stay in a room with the view. Trust me, nothing beats waking up in the morning and seeing it shrouded in mist, or getting out of the shower and catching a glimpse of it at the magic hour!
Service: I emailed the hotel beforehand to tell them this trip was to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. So upon arrival we found the room decked with rose petals, a bouquet of red roses sitting in the living room, and our dinner at the western restaurant was also decorated with extra flowers. Antony, our butler, tried his best to keep us pampered. Green tea was served when we wanted, with delicious brownies and cheese cake and biscuits. When I complained that the temperature in the room was a bit toasty, he dashed in and opened the window to air the room. He gave shopping and restaurant recommendations... I can't think of a time when service was needed and wasn't delivered straight away and with a smile.
Food: perhaps my only small complaint is the breakfast buffet (rather limited options) but dinner was fine; just happy to have such crisp romaine lettuce for my Caesar salad. The food at the Chinese restaurant was great but a little pricey.
Spa: it is located in a standalone building across from the main building, thus makes it a bit difficult to just hop over in flimsy gym clothes with freezing temperature outside. The pool looks spectacular, but the attendant told us the heating wasn't working so the water was around 20 degrees instead of the usual 28, a bit too chilly for a dip (swim was out of the question given the altitude). The gym was under renovation, though with the altitude I wouldn't brave the treadmill or any weights....
In the end, all I want to say is a big THANK YOU to Antony and the staff of St Regis Lhasa for making this a most memorable wedding anniversary for my wife and me!
