“Comfortable Tibetan Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2014

This is an attractive and comfortable Tibetan hotel. We had stayed in the Shambhala Palace which was very nice except for the rock like beds. The Gorkha Hotel's beds were firm but compared to the Shambhala they were bliss.
The restaurant is very attractive.

We stayed a total of 4 nites. I understand the building is the old Nepali Embassy. Has a lot of charm. Rooms are clean Staff is friendly. Nice courtyard for happy hour (beer and peanuts) before supper. Nice restaurant upstairs - but when we were there only did breakfast. Front door is locked at night. good security feature.

Room Tip: We preferred room on the main floor

The main building of Gorkha is characteristic in Tibetan style but the stairs are steep. The staffs are smiling. The courtyard is nice and quiet. Poor acoustic partition between the rooms and the corridors, we can hear the voice coming when seating in the yard. The public restroom is not well maintained, the dim light did not feel very comfortable. It is in the lane of the residential areas, so never expect a taxi but it only take a few minute walking to the Barkor. It could be a nice shoot for a Tibetan style hotel in Lhasa.

Room Tip: Rooms on the right building when entering the yard ( the restaurant on the roof) should be newer and...

I stayed at this hotel for a total of six nights and found it absolutely charming. It is old, but that's part of the charm. There is a central courtyard which we enjoyed sitting in at night. The rooms are not deluxe, but they are certainly adequate. The beds were comfortable and everything worked. The location is very good, as it is easy to walk around the old quarter of Lhasa. I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast in the restaurant was also very good.

We stayed in this hotel as part of a tour of a Tibet organized by David Li of Odyssey Tours who we strongly recommend. We loved the hotel. The room was decorated in Tibetan style and had all the comforts we desired. It is very close to Barkhor Street and the Jokhung Temple. It is in the old quarter and in the midst of the Tibetan lifestyle. It is just off one of the main streets of Lhasa and I am puzzled "Red B" had so much trouble finding it. The staff were very friendly and really made an effort. If we ever go back to Lhasa we will stay in this hotel.

Room Tip: Our room on the 2nd level facing into the courtyard was great.

The Hotel is very well located in the old quarter of Lhasa. The Jokhung Temple is within walking distance as is the Potala Palace. It's old world architecture and design is particularly pleasing. The staff is very friendly and responsive - and knew more English than some of the Mainland Chinese hotels one has stayed in ! Has a lovely Indian restaurant within walking distance. The hotel needs to renovate its toilets as they have seen better days.Stayed here for 4 days.
