My husband and I are both vegetarians, so we were anxious to try Bookworm Cafe because the menu looks gorgeous online. We went on Saturday night and there were only two or three tables occupied (this should've been our first clue).
First, the one good point: The juice was very good. I had apple juice and my husband had the Gaia shake - both were clearly made to order and tasted very fresh.
Now, the bad points: There are two different veggie burgers on the menu - a "tofu burger" and a "bean burger". We ordered one of each, and I ordered the soup of the day because it sounded wonderful - mushroom and cashew. Unfortunately, the soup never arrived. By the time I managed to get the (sole) waiter's attention, he told me that the chef had "forgotten" about the soup and informed me that, although our burgers were now ready, he could hold them in the back and get me my soup. What? Let our burgers sit there getting cold while I eat the soup? I told him to forget about the soup and just bring the burgers.
I shouldn't have worried about the temperature of the food. Neither burger was warm, and the chips that were served with it must have been cooked hours earlier, as they were cold, greasy, and limp. Both burger patties were extremely soft and were served on very hard and chewy buns, so at the first bite they immediately oozed out the sides. But that's alright, as we didn't take many bites. Both were underseasoned, with very little flavor at all. We even ended up putting salt all over everything (including the chips) in an attempt to make them edible, but no luck.
We've traveled the world and love vegetarian food, and often find wonderful surprises, but Bookworm Cafe was an absolute disappointment. This was compounded by the fact that it was our one-year anniversary, and we really wanted a good but casual meal. We ended up having to stop at the market on the way home so we could make dinner - we were both still starving because we couldn't force down that awful meal.
