I just had a very enjoyable evening at Felix at the top of the Peninsula Hotel. The restaurant has a well-earned reputation for excellence, and the meal was everything I expected.
I had the seasonal mushroom and squid salad as an appetizer, the roast duck for my main course, and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate for desert. My main meal was complemented by a glass of Rhone Valley Hermitage wine, and I finished off with camomile tea. The salad was nice and fresh, with a combination of flavours and textures that was pleasing on the palate. My duck was cooked medium and it was just perfect. The desert was four different chocolate dishes in portions that were satisfying. The chocolate mousse and caramel cream sauce were exquisite! I had only one small criticism, which was that the brownie was a little on the dry side under a topping of sorbet, but that didn’t detract from an overall wonderful meal.
The waiting staff have clearly been trained very well. They were attentive, but not overbearing (There is nothing worse than eating a nice meal with the waiter hovering around your table, distracting you from your meal or company, or rushing you on to the next course).
The restaurant has great ambience. The ceiling is high and the high glass walls allow you to look out over the harbour to the lights of Central Hong Kong or inland over the city of Kowloon. Watching the ferries, cruise boats and other shipping on the water adds a relaxing element to the outlook. The lighting is dim, but not dark, which adds to the intimate feeling. The volume of the jazz and other poplar music playing in the background is high enough to clearly hear it without being so loud that it would prevent intimate conversation. OK, I read about the rest rooms, and they are very nice too, with a great outlook on the city. But the restrooms are more of a novelty than a selling point.
From what I saw in previous reviews, the ambience of the restaurant is its selling point, but don’t think that is what is mainly on offer. It is the finishing touch to an overall excellent restaurant. I don’t get to Hong Kong very often, but I’ll be making a beeline for Felix the next time I’m here.
