My friend and I stopped in at Cafe Kool this afternoon. We were a little confused by the set up, as there's a patisserie at the entrance and we weren't sure if we could choose items there to have with our coffee or what. The hostess certainly didn't help, as she was unfriendly, abrupt and, I hate to say it, rather rude. We asked if we could come into the vast, nearly empty place for coffee (it was 4:30) and she looked dismayed and said, "Just coffee?" We were a bit flustered, as the concierge had told us that we could get coffee here not less than 5 minutes before.
"And maybe something to eat," my friend said, "can we get pastries from here?" pointing at the luscious-looking treats in the glass cases. This seemed to annoy the hostess even more, as she said (testily) something like "You can, but they're more expensive," (or something) as she showed us to a window table (which we'd asked for) with the fakest smile I've ever seen. "She's trying to be friendly but failing," I said, and my friend agreed.
From then on the service took a massive upswing. We ordered a soy milk cappuccino and a regular coffee with cream. My friend loved her cap and I can honestly say it was the best coffee I've had in 18 months in Hong Kong. Seriously. It was gorgeous! Wonderful flavour, extremely smooth - just delicious. Which I probably said five times while sipping. My friend decided we should go get pastries so we took ourselves to the patisserie and purchased a small slice of cheesecake with fresh raspberries on top, and I don't know what it was my friend had, a wee work of art in two layers that she declared divine, as was the cheesecake. $30HK each, $45 each if ordered at the table.
The table service was impeccable, as though we'd ordered a full dinner. Napkin service, for heaven's sake! I don't expect that when having coffee. As soon as I'd put an empty sugar packet on my side plate it was whisked away and replaced with a fresh plate. Asked if we wanted more coffee we both agreed we did, which we normally don't do but heck, when it's that good it's hard to say no. We both said we'd like more. No refills here, our empty cups were removed and fresh coffees in fresh cups quickly delivered. I expected to be charged for 4 coffees but we weren't.
Of course, one pays for all this, $70 each for coffee. Now I don't know about you, but I've never paid nearly $10US for a coffee in my life, but such divine coffee with such exquisite service is a lovely thing once in awhile and makes a girl feel oh so special.
All hotel staff (save for Miss Grumpy), such as doormen, other hostesses, concierge - very courteous, friendly, welcoming. Coffee and pastries highly recommended.
