“Great atmosphere, good tea, expect a line”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

My husband and I had afternoon tea twice at the Peninsula Hotel during our trip to Hong Kong. The hotel lobby itself is beautiful, and the live classical music definitely adds to the atmosphere. There was a 30 minute wait both times that we went (arriving at about 3:00), which wasn't that big of a deal - we actually ended up having a great conversation with the couples in front and behind us, and ended up asking to be seated together. Hotel guests can make reservations, but otherwise it is first come first served. There is a dress code, but only that you can't wear flip flops - which only seemed to be enforced against men. After 7:00 PM gentlemen must wear long pants.
The tea itself was pretty good - not the best we had, even just in Hong Kong, but certainly enjoyable. We did the standard high tea for two set. The scones and pastries were excellent, but neither one of us was particularly fond of the finger sandwiches (lots of mayo). The service was pretty good, given how busy the staff was with the entire lobby full.
Overall, definitely worth the trip. The hotel is only a 2 minute walk from the Kowloon side of the Star Ferry, and about the same distance from the MTR station at TST.

“Fantastic and worth while experience in Hong Kong!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

I brought my mom and my friend to the Peninsula and arrived at about 1:30 on a Friday afternoon. We were 5th(ish) in line and the quartet was already playing classical music and some beautiful covers. We were seated by 1:50 near the windows. We selected the Afternoon Tea and chose our individual teas. They brought us each our own steaming pots and poured our first glasses for us. The atmosphere is lovely and the decor/table settings were beautiful. The snacks arrived on a three tiered set up complete with scones, savory sandwich bites (cucumber, salmon, chicken pastry puffs), macaroons and little tea desserts. They didn't rush us and everything was fantastic quality.

Don't worry too much about dress. I wore a strapless dress and gladiator sandals, my mom had on white shorts and her hiking shoes and my friend had on a sleeveless number with t-strap sandals. Most people were dressed comfortably and I understand men are not to wear sleeveless, but I did see people in jeans, rubber shoes and the like.

Absolutely LOVELY and would go again!

“Not worth it!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We were so looking forward to this part of our trip and got dressed up specially! My husband called to see if he could reserve a table and was told that they don't take reservations. So we arrived at 2pm when it starts to find that almost all the tables in the lobby had reserved signs on them and there was a huge que of around a hundred people. Which did not seem to be moving, apart from people taking up the offer to have tea in the Felix their top floor restaurant after about 15mins of no movement we decided to do the same. When we arrived there was probably 6/7 tables of dinners at different stages of eating. Given we had just walked in 32* heat and then stood in a que for 15mins one of the first things we asked for was a bottle of water, then we told them we want tea not coffee... Now I am not joking when I say that is the only option you get unless you want to add bubbles which we decided not to. So all that had to be done was four cups of tea, some milk (soya was not an option). Then they bring you your pre made sandwiches and cakes, and leave you to it. With no information about what your about to eat. it was just slapped down and left!

So it took I am not exaggerating us asking twice and ten minutes for our water to arrive. For a table of four they brought one small jug of milk, which was finished in two cups. There was two sugars and three sweeteners in the bowl. This would have been fine and not that irritating if the staff were paying attention and replaced the stuff that was finished. sadly they didn't and it turned out to get anything not just the water took a long time.

The sandwich fillings were nice but the bread had started to dry out. As had some of the other bits and pieces one of the filled pastry cakes actually tasted stale!

When we asked for the bill we were gob smacked to see that the slowest bottle of evian ever was £18 sadly we had ordered two!! The bathrooms were amazing and the view was nice but the service was poor and the food was really average for a five star high tea experience. We all left a bit disappointed and like we had been ripped off! Perhaps we would have felt differently if we had been in the lobby.. But this not one to be recommended!

“A legend that each visit reinforce”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Becoming a legend hotel is surely the dream of any owner...
In Hong Kong where the competition is ferocious, its a life achievement....
What to say then when no properties would even consider possible to ever dispute the throne... Beautiful Peninsula...
The fifth stay and always the same enchantment ! Expecting perfection drive me to find imperfection here and there, but good Lord, what a stunning hotel.
