“Couldn't Fault It”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

We stayed at the Novotel Nathan Rd for six nights in early Nov 2012. We booked a Club room on the 15th floor and our room number was 1528.

In a nutshell we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There are many reasons for picking a hotel in HK from wanting a harbour view, being close to the airport, wanting to be on HK Island to be near Central and the Peak or on Kowloon for the shopping. For us we'd stayed at Causeway Bay (HK side) on our last stay here and this time we preferred to be more around the shopping. We weren't interested in paying the higher prices for a harbour view so we picked the Novotel Nathan Rd. It's positioned bewteen the Ladies Markets in Mong Kok and the Star Ferry on the harbour and it suited out needs perfectly. It was a bit far to walk both ways even though we could and did but after you work out the public transport system which is simple we didn't walk again. From our hotel there was a bus to the Star Ferry and the MTR (one block away) took us to the Mong Kok... easy!

In fact getting around the whole of HK from here was easy, cheap and quick! Tip... get an Octopus Card from any MTR station which covers you for all public transport. It can be used on the MTR, buses, trams and the Star Ferry not to mention in many retail outlets. Saves having to have the right money and its really easy to use. Anything you don't use you can get back at the end of your trip.

The hotel itself was great. Booking a Club room was worth the extra money as far as we were concerned. Apart from one night we didn't put our hand in our pockets for any meals or drinks... breakfast lunch or dinner. Food and drinks were good and plenty of it. Staff were very good too.

As far as getting to and from the hotel is concerned we used Hong Kong Shuttle which took us from the airport directly to our hotel. It was efficient, comfortable and very reasonably priced at AUS$40 return. Don't take the MTR this is much easier!

Room Tip: We had room 1528 which was close to recption, elevators and the club room.

If you don't want to spend big money in Kowloon but want a comfortable stay, then Novotel on Nathan Rd is a good choice. The rooms are small and tight but clean and modern with a decent shower. They do supply good quality pillows and you can mix and match with the pillow menu.

There is a large reception area which leads upstairs to the main lift/lobby area with a bar (with happy hour and live music each night) and a restaurant. The only real complaint I had was the lack of free wifi and at $135HKD a night, gets expensive if you stay for an extended period.

As mentioned, Jordan MTR station is a short walk away while the local area has numerous shops and eateries as well as tourist famed Temple Street markets. A few blocks over from Temple St is the Yau Ma Tei wet market which is worth a look during the mornings when the locals are out picking up groceries and fresh produce.

There is a Starbucks a block away for those that crave a western style coffee each morning like myself.

The Novotel is also about a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the Kowloon Airport Express MTR station for those arriving from the airport.

Room Tip: Suppose a higher level room will limit street noise if you're a light sleeper?

Stayed at Novotel on Nathan road from the end of October until the beginning of November for a total of 10 days with a two night stay in Macau during the middle of our stay. It's well known that hotels in Hong Kong are on the pricey side. Novotel is definitely a bargain hotel without being of bargain hotel quality and the location cannot be beat.

The room/hotel and services: Did not bother to purchase the upgrade to their premium rooms on the higher floors. For about US$50+ for free wi-fi and their breakfast it just didn't seem worth it and I knew I would never around the hotel during happy hour so knew I wouldn't be taking advantage of any of those perks. If you do want the hotel's wifi, you can purchase it a la carte for HK130 or 7 days for HK400, or hop down to the lobby to use one of the 7 free macs. Yes, the rooms are tiny, but well appointed. Beds, pillows and blankets and duvets were clean, super comfy, and changed daily. When we checked into our non-smoking room & floor, it actually reeked of smoke. They brought up a purifying machine while we were out and *magic* no more smoke smell. There is a small fridge provided in the room along with tea, coffee, a kettle and an international power adapter free to use while staying in the room. Although tips for the cleaning staff are not expected, they are certainly appreciated and a small token like HK10 and they are happy to oblige with any additional requests (extra water, tea, new pillows, blankets, etc). They also have a free luggage storage service which is helpful if you have a flight late in the day and must check out sooner. In our case, we left our large bags with the hotel while we traveled to Macau for two days.

Food: Can't speak about the quality of the breakfast, but for HK118 you can certainly find an amazing meal nearby for HALF that amount. There is a China Tourism Certified authentic noodle house just around the corner. Come out of the hotel walk right towards Nathan road and walk about a block to the right up Nathan Road and at the Starbucks take right, pass the 7 eleven is the restaurant (can't remember the name, but it has automatic doors that you open by pushing a button on the door.) They have a menu with pictures and English translations of all the dishes. The dim sum right next door to Novotel (to the right) also has great dim sum available from 7:30am-4. It might be slightly more difficult to order since not all their menus are available in english or have photos. You can eat your dim sum heart out for about HK240 for four people. If you want to try some authentic, unique and yummy Chinese desserts try Honeymoon Desserts at 63 Nathan Road 6th floor - menu has lots of pictures and is in English.

The area: A five minute walk from Jordan Station, a five minute walk to the temple street night market and although all within a walk able distance, a 5-10 minute cab ride to the Star Ferry, the star walk, and the Jade Market. Not being a fluent Cantonese speaker, I found the MTR VERY easy to navigate the city with (much easier than a taxi, since many of the taxi drivers do not speak much English).

Highlights: take the MTR a few stops to Prince Edward or Mongkok for ladies market shopping on Fa Yuen street. Take the MTR to Lantau Island, ride the sky tram (Ngong Ping 360) to see the Tian Tan Buddha. Walk to the Night Market on Temple Street. Walk to the skyline night show on the Star Walk (8pm-8:15 nightly). Take the MTR to Central and walk to the Peak Tram and go all the way up to the Peak.

What I would skip: 1. Aberdeen - while it's a nice area, it is FAR and has lost its promise of old world charm. Was expecting to see a harbor full of Sanpam boats, instead there are million dollar yachts, a free ferry to the Jumbo floating restaurant (also not worth the trip) and A handful of Sanpam-looking boats for hire that take you to the floating restaurant and a small tour of the harbor. 2. Stanley Markey - far out and severely overcrowded with all the same merchants you can see at the Night or Ladies market except more expensive. 3. Nan Lian Garden - like walking into an amusement park's version of what an old Hong Kong garden would look like... Fake.

The location is very convenient for meeting, going around, and going to/from the airport. Visitors can go to Kowloon station (Elements), Harbour City, or Mongkok station, all nearby, for shopping or eating. The Nathan street and the surroundings is very nice for walking around, with many Chinese restaurants.
