My wife, my 16-year-old daughter and I just completed a six-day/six night vacation at the Langham Place during April 2008. It was very, very enjoyable for many reasons and I’ll break down the hotel and our experience based on Location, Rooms, Amenities, Staff and Restaurants for everybody to review and make their own choices. Each category will be rated on scale of 1-5, with 1 being horrible and 5 Outstanding We all would definitely stay there again, and for those who are making their first trip to Hong Kong we both loved the city and entire six days.
Location – Overall Rating 4
The location from out point of view could be broken down based on access to transportation, neighborhood, and Kowloon or Hong Kong side of city.
Transportation and Linkages
The spot is good; not great. Hong Kong is a walking city and has a terrific public transportation system. The Mong Kong location with the MTR adjacent to the hotel was great. However, there are better locations with comparable locations either on Hong Kong Island at Central or Admiralty stop or on Kowloon side at YTR stop. Very nice and easy to get anywhere and would not hesitate to stay again. 4.5 subsection rating
Neighborhood
The Mong Kong neighborhood has some very nice features and OK features. First, the hotel is adjacent to Langham Place, a vertical in fill mall. It’s not a super deluxe mall, but more mid – level with many nice stores, but not many luxury brands. I would suggest that the neighborhood reminds me of Times Square in New York. Every conceivable retailer imaginable available and people all over the place. For those who love to shop at the Hong Kong markets a few blocks from the hotel is the Ladies Market. Yes, my wife and daughter made it there twice and loved it. Finally, there’s not many restaurant or other options outside the hotel so for those who don’t want to leave the neighborhood this might not be the place for them. 3.5 subsection rating.
Kowoon or Hong Kong Island
This is a toss up for anybody. However, after my week in HK, I would suggest that Honk Kong Island would be preferable to Kowloon Island. There’s definitely more of everything. We found ourselves going to Hong Kong Island almost daily. Most of the ferries to the outer islands leave from Hong Kong Island. Frankly, but for the laser light show, which must be seen from Kowloon Island and the view of Hong Kong Island is your staying at the Intercontinental or other comparable hotel with drop dead fabulous view of Hong Kong island I can’t see why would want to stay here. 4 subsection rating.
Rooms Rating 5
It’s hard to say much bad about the rooms. We had a 600 sf suite for around $375/night. I felt that was a very nice deal. We were located on the club level, what they call Level L. it was very nice and the room was very nice. Nice linens, two flat screen TV’s, nice washroom, great view, etc. Could not of been better.
Staff Rating 5
This is easy. They could not of tried harder to please; top to bottom. From the moment we checked into the hotel after flying 15 hours non-stop from Chicago to when we checked out, each and every staff member was extremely accomadating. This did not just stop in the concierge lounge, but included everybody at the hotel from maintenance, housekeeping, attendants in the gym, etc.
Amenities Rating 5
Both in the hotel and surrounding the hotel they were terrific. To start with the hotel is connected to the Langham Place mall. Not super luxury, but very nice with lots of fast food restaurants and a Starbucks right out the door from the hotel lobby on the 4th floor. Additionally, the MTR was right next to the Langham Place. You could access either from the interior of the mall or a short walk outside. Terrific.
However, hotel amenities nothing to sneeze at. Hotel spa was wonderful. We had two separate treatments and the therapists were wonderful. Wished they were closer to me 100% of the time. The exercise room/gym was fully equipped. Though we did not use the pool, we viewed it and it’s a wow experience. Hard to beat.
Restaurants Rating 5
We solely went to The Place, which was their continental restaurant and Ming Court, which was where we enjoyed Dim Sung. Both were wonderful. We had breakfast every day at The Place. Was great. The hotel buffet breakfast was terrific and included a number of items that were traditional, English, Asian and a combination. Terrific. Ming Court was great. Frankly, it seemed to be frequented more by locals than guests at the hotel I consider this a good thing.
Summary
Ok. So I loved the hotel and loved Hong Kong. Yes, I did. With the exception of the slightly offbeat location, this was a five in every other category. That being said, it’s totally impossible going wrong at the Langham Place and I would highly recommend for either a vacation of business trip to Hong Kong
