“Good Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

I just returned from my 3 days stay at The Excelsior Hotel, Causeway Bay in Hong Kong.
The rooms were good ( ask for the harbour view but note that you dont get to see the entire harbor as there is construction going on just in front of the hotel). My bookings did not come with breakfast but nevertheless, there are many restaurants and eateries ( try the noodle shops tucked in between shops!!) around this hotel. There is also Sogo store just next door and Times Square a stone throw away and Starbuck is just adjacent to the hotel ( breakfast!).

The service is good. The staff are friendly and the amenities are sufficient.

If you are on a business trip and you are required to travel to Central area in HK , then this would not be your ideal hotel for these reasons. The Excelsior is at Causeway Bay, which may not be far when you get a glimpse at the street directory to go to Central but you might waste precious time stuck in cabs. That is if you manage to get a cab in HK! My colleague and I realized that!

If you are here for holiday, then by all means this hotel is for you and its value for $$$. But if you want peace and quiet, this is not the location because day and night, you will see and feel the human traffic all around this hotel.

There is also a shuttle bus that takes you from the airport to the HK Airport Express station direct, for free! and the doormen are just excellent...

Room Tip: ask for the harbour view and dont get rooms near the lifts. Unless you like the sound of them going...

Stayed at The Excelsior for recent work trip. The hotel and rooms were nothing to shout about, but the service staff were very polite and did go the distance to make you feel welcome. Overall a good business choice, convenient in the heart of Causeway Bay.

We stayed at the Excelsior for only one night. The hotel was just beautiful! Great lobby, very convenient location -- close to the metro, near good shopping and restaurants. The room was comfortable, though a tad on the small side -- but not bad for Hong Kong. We had a bit of a view of Victoria harbor. The internet setup was perfect -- good access and speed. The usual amenities (shampoo, conditioner, etc) were a step above the usual. All in all, we liked it!

We had been to a concert, so came back to the hotel rather late -- but hungry. We meandered around the area and found a number of street vendors and a lively night life that further enhanced the night. We had fun!

Only negative: the concierge staff was a bit flustered and totally over run at one point when 2 tour buses arrived and a surge of people exploded into the lobby with all their bags. The concierge staff just held open all the doors to enable as many of the arrivals to enter as possible. There was no level of direction and crowd/luggage management. As a result, this just created an increasing and unsafe log jamb of people and bags. We were trying to leave to go to our concert and were unable to get out the door for a good 10 minutes. We were not the only guests stuck in the maelstrom -- there were a number of us trying to leave the building, but it was just not possible, And while waiting, we were banged by luggage and pushed around by the growing crowd of milling people draging their bags and trying to checkin, find friends, etc. It was terrible and I got a healthy bruise on one leg. (arrggg) Instead, the concierge staff should have isolated one of the doors to enable people to safely leave the building and release some of the pressure inside the lobby. They should have also taken control of the bags being dragged around by the new guests. Maybe set up a drop ff area or something -- and mange the flow more proactively.

The Excelsior is a great value hotel. Being part of the Mandarin Hotel group the service is amazing but such good value. Great location close to MTR and surrounded by shops. Sogo Dept store (above the MTR) has 9 levels and all the brands you can think of. The Midday Gun just opposite is a ancient tradition and worth hanging around for. The harbour view rooms are amazing. Some FF&E is quite old but the lifts are great and the air con quite controllable. Plenty of good restaurants in and around the hotel. In summary a mini Mandarin.

Room Tip: Exec level 30/31 is worth paying for. Lounge on 31 small but great service. Get free Wi Fi.

Good comfortable Hotel - but no pool.
Spent nearly 2 weeks at the Excelsior in September and had a very comfortable stay, upgraded to the executive floor which provided access to the Executive lounge, providing Breakfast, light lunch snacks and drinks all day. Need to use it virtually every day to get real value.

I would sty here again, but not if I had a weekend end in the trip like this time and wanted to spend some time sitting around the pool with a few beers.

This is one of the reason why I had a memorable and fun vacation in Hongkong. i feel very at home in this hotel. it has a very comfortable bed which always tempt me to sleep all the time. the location is great since it is just 2 minutes walk to MTR(Causeway Bay station). there are nearby shops which are open till midnight.
I want to stay in this hotel the next time I visit Hongkong. This is highly recommended hotel.
