“Definitely worth staying”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2010

It was my first time at Mandarin Oriental. Only heard about it or read about it, so was looking forward to spending a couple of days as an experience. and it did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, we were happy. The concierge team was very welcoming, front desk was super efficient, rooms were laid out in a way where you immediately feel comfortable (even though the ceilings were rather low somehow). What I also liked was the location of this hotel. Everything is in walking distance, esp. if you use the passages between the buildings. Whilst staying there we tried the bakery and the afternoon teas, both of which were hugely satisfying from my part. it is definitely a good place to stay if you want to enjoy the best of hong kong!

The hotel is conveniently located close to the IFC and most financial institutions on hongkong island if you're on a business trip. The hotel staff is one of best you will come across anywhere in the world. Everything with this hotel is very efficient. Getting there is also easy by the airport express train - from the terminal where you can already check-in and drop luggage it's just a 5-10 minute walk or 3 minute cab ride. There is also an unlimited number of shopping around the area. For drinks check out the Sevva rooftop bar across the street in the Prince's building.

What a fantastic hotel, from the room to the level of service and hospitality. You can't go wrong by staying here, but be warned it's expensive, not for roughing it or budget traveling.
Situated in central Hong Kong, only a stone throw away from the city night life and shopping. Oasis in the bustling city.

From the moment we checked in we were treated with the highest level of service. The room was beautiful with an amazing view of the city. The amenities were fantastic - no detail was overlooked. The concierge staff went above and beyond to make the ideal arrangements and recommendations

Pros:
1) Location
The hotel has a great location with only a couple of meters from the Hong Kong Central MTR-station and next to major shopping centers in Hong Kong side.

2) Rooms
The hotel rooms are very nice and cleaning and turn-down service is of top class.

Sorry but that's about it for the Pro's!

Cons:
1) The service
The service attitude of the personel was so-and-so except for a couple of people at the concierge who had a nice, straigt-forward and natural touch to helping us. Otherwise the service felt artificial and made us feel not at home (Yes, the service was very formal but lacked the sincerity and warmth we expected and that one certainly can find in many other Hong Kong 5-star hotels, at Mira Hotel Hong Kong for example which is great in many ways, stay there! Kowloon is nicer and more relaxed anyway in our opinion). As someone here at Tripadvisor wrote in his/her review Mandarin Oriental is not a very cosy hotel. Amen to that!

2) Breakfast / Food in general
We had booked a package that included the breakfast either at the Clipper lounge (buffet) of at the Cafe Causette (a la carte). The buffet breakfast can be described in one word only: bad. The food tasted strange or it didn't taste at all. The a la carte breakfast was better so if you have a choice, pick that. On the day we arrived, we had a lunch at the Cafe Causette. The food wasn't that great but was expensive. The price can be expected of course at this hotel but you certainly can expect a tasteful meal as well which it was not. So combine that with the "over" formal and artificial service, you have a package you should avoid. Note, however, that we didn't have lunch/dinner at the other restaurants in the hotel so we can't say anything about the food/service quality there.

To Sum Up:

If you want to spend a lot of money for nice and clean rooms and decent sleep quality, this may be an option for you to stay. You can, however, find these elsewhere with a much better price-quality ratio than in Mandarine Oriental. If you are looking for a sincere and hospitable service, nice feeling and cosyness, but at the same time luxurious stay at Hong Kong, dont' stay at Mandarin Oriental. Sorry to say but they make you feel like you are not welcome and that you should feel privileged to stay in their hotel. As said before, we would definitely recommend Mira (or even Kowloon Shangri-La) over the Mandarin. We have stayed in both.

I was quite satisfied with the service, altough we didn`t ask for much on this occasion.
We enjoyed the quiet room and the quick room service. The only disappointment was the problem with thee lights in our room. The service man could have been more polite.
He fixed the light anyway. I had no problems with this hotel, but you can find fancier place in Hong Kong for the same money.
