“Top class service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

Another return visit and we cannot fault the service and general thoughtfulness of the staff in this hotel. Immaculate rooms with a great view and our kids all had presents and cute little slippers laid out for them on arrival. Breakfast buffet is very extensive and makes choosing what to have very difficult. Other food in the hotel of a high standard .
Great spa and gym, pool a little unsuitable for younger children. Very helpful concierge.
Expensive, but worth it.

Stayed there for two night at the beginning of April with my colleague. This hotel might be one of the oldest hotels in HK and is very good fashion which I like.Room is very nice and user friendly. The staff is extremely helpful and very attentive. The only down side is that rooms are facing street are not very sound proof. When I checked in on 7th April, I could not fall asleep as there was a street party outside which was quite noisy. Glad the party finished before 6PM.

From check in to check out - perfection. If you want a central location in Hong Kong and you can afford it why would you go anywhere else. This is a Chinese take on a fine British hotel in the nicest possible way.

A repeat stay at the ('Old') Mandarin, this time with family after a break of perhaps 8 years. It is still a wonderfully calm oasis in a madly busy city.
From a perfect 'meet and greet' at the airport to a similar departure, nothing is ever too much trouble and all requests are courteously and efficiently dealt with. We had excellently equipped adjoining rooms with plenty of space, very comfortable beds and superb bathrooms. The staff variously referred to 'the renovations' carried out a few years ago but reassuringly the Mandarin feels now as welcoming and comfortable as it has always felt. It is one of the few hotels globally to retain a real soul. By no means cheap, but worth every penny. Just one grizzle: why charge separately for WiFi? At around GBP 500 per night per room that feels annoying.

Staying at many hotels for business and leisure - traveling almost every week - I think this one of the very best hotels we ever stayed.

As we travelled with 2 young children let me share the experience from that perspective.

Arrival:
We booked the airport transfer through the hotel. After a long flight from Europe with far too much luggage we felt really relieved when two airport representatives of the MO took care of our bags and escorted us to limousine lounge. Once we got out of the car at the hotel we were greeted by one of the receptionists - still outside of the hotel - who brought us directly to the room and all checkin formalities were done in the room which took just a few minutes. Superb first impression.

Room:
We had booked a harbor room view. The view was nice but not as spectacular as expected. The sofa in the area at the window was converted into an extra bed for our older child and for the younger one they provided a baby cot (just as a side note: when we did the reservation we were told it is not possible to put an extra bed + a baby cot into the room. In the end we saw that there was enough space for a baby cot and we got it within 10 minutes after we requested it.). The area with the extra bed at the window can be separated by a curtain, which is our 6 year old son really liked. Overall the room furniture, finish and design was top end. As I probably clicked on the right banner when doing the online reservation a complementary chilled bottle of pretty nice champaign was waiting for us in the room.

Restaurants and Bars:
We ate with our children at Cafe Causette and the Clipper Lounge - both for breakfast and dinner. Very child friendly and really good food. However we were a bit disappointed that children below 12 were not permitted in any of the fine dining restaurants and in none of the bars. Considering that we did eat with our children in a couple of one and two Michelin star rated restaurants during our stay in Hong Kong (providing children menus and no problem at all) we found that policy not so convenient. We were missing also some sort of "living room/lounge" with live entertainment to visit together with our kids in the early evening (due to jet lag they stayed up quite late).

One night we took a baby sitter and dined at the Mandarin Grill. Dinner was very nice and pleasant however prices were remarkably high.

Baby sitting service:
One night we took advantage of the baby sitting service provided by the hotel. This worked our very well. The baby sitter really knew what she was doing and she managed to entertain the kids for 3 hours and even put the younger one to sleep.

In conclusion it was a great stay and absolute top end in terms of service. Well suited to stay with kids with the exception that you will not be able to visit several restaurants and bars in the hotel with your kids.

Room Tip: The view from our harbor room was not that great. Next time I would not pay a premium for a room wit...

Spent 9 nights over Christmas - booked as a BA flight+hotel holiday.

- Arrived at MO by cab from airport
- Seamless check-in with helpful front-office
- Spacious room with great views of Victoria harbour
- Concierge staff incredibly helpful and knowledgeable
- Room service food pretty good - on the one occasion where they made a mistake which we pointed out - got a replacement meal + a big chocolate box and a personal letter of apology
- Nice spa with friendly staff
- Breakfast can be a somewhat rushed affair though - it seemed incredibly busy during the first few days we were there and on two days we paid separately to have breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the HSBC tower
- Food (lunch and dinner) in the above restaurant quite good (although pricey).
- Location is next to all the designer boutiques on the island as well as a few minutes walk away from some good non-boutique shopping and malls
- Also convenient for ferry/helicopter service to Macau (we took a day trip)
- Business centre staff very helpful with SIM recharge (I already had a HK SIM from previous visits)

So to summarise,

Pros:
- see above

Cons:
- Got no upgrade of room although we stayed for so long
- That old bugbear - you have to pay for WiFi which I find ridiculous

Room Tip: A harbour facing room (front of the building) on the upper floor

I have stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in both Bangkok and Hong Kong many many times over the years and I always feel like a traveller returning home. The moment you enter into the hotel everything changes. Hong Kong is a very busy place and the Oriental is a retreat from all the madness.

The welcome you receive is perfect, the rooms are perfect and the service is absolutely amazing.

This time I had a suite over looking the city. I prefer this view to the garden view.

I just love the luxurious feel of the bath robes. the beds are amazing. Good choice of television too, especially after an extended time in the mainland.

I ate at Man Wah's and the food is really good Cantonese. Probably the best Cantonese in Hong Kong (NO MSG).....

Go for the ultimate Dim Sum experience.....

Or go for a meal in the evening and have:

Hot and Sour Soup

Lobster and black bean sauce (My number one).

The Peking duck (is the best ever PD in the world....)

Fried noodles with shrimp and garlic (love these noodles).

Bean curd in a bucket

In the morning I grabbed a cake or two ;) from the Cake shop (that place can make you fat but it so worth it). Again best cakes in HKG.

The only reason that I was happy to leave is that I know that I will be returning soon (with my wife and children). :)

Room Tip: City view rooms are brilliant.
