“Dumpling Specialist”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

Din Tai Fung has spread its wings widely since it opened in the back streets of Taipei and now has restaurants in China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea, Australia and even in the USA. Its speciality is dumplings with all sorts of excellent fillings. Bite off the top, suck out the juice and munch the dumpling....that's what I am told is the way to eat them.

There are, generally, queues outside waiting for tables but we didn't have to wait too long before they found us a table. The dekiverey of the food is super-efficient and done with care even although the place was heaving on the Thursday evening we ate.

Great experience - Taiwan style.

“Read and eat.......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

Just read everybody else's reviews, they really are not lying!

I ate here with friends on a Saturday evening during the HK7s - so it was heaving. We waited about twenty minutes for our table, so not too bad really.

Service was perfect - any boy were those guys & gals busy. I was blessed with a translator for my visit, so ordering was easy, but I’m quite sure a tourist would have no problem ordering in English.

The restaurant itself is large but bright and airy with modern decor. Of course, very clean. As is customary for this chain, the kitchen was open for all to see.

My hosts ordered a selection of food including noodles, dumplings and vegetables. I have no idea what the names were, but the dumplings with pork and soup inside were divine (if not a little tricky to handle with chopsticks). The presentation and attention to detail were far better than one would believe such a large, busy establishment could achieve. Vegetables were fresh and crunchy and the noodles were light, well-cooked and bathed in tasty sauces (one was peanut-based, the other dark and salty).

The price seemed very reasonable for what we had. I'm pretty sure there's no reservations accepted, just turn-up, take a ticket and wait a bit - well worth that wait though!

I would love to return one day.

“Steamed Dumping - Do not miss it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Din Tai Fung is specialised in steamed dumpling. It is a branch from the famous restaurant in Taiwan. I have tried steamed dumpling in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China (not to mention those in other countries in Asia, Australia and Europe) and this one (the Causeway Bay branch) served me the best taste I have ever had for steamed dumpling. The wrapper is very thin, the meat inside is sweet and very juicy. Remember these tips:
1) visit this branch only during the off-peak hours, avoid 12:00nn to 14:00pm and 18:00pm to 20:30pm on weekdays
2) try the original steamed dumpling before you go for other fancy dumpling or other foods
3) find yourself a companion who can master a pair of chopsticks if you do not use chopsticks
4) drink only hot tea provided until you finish your dumpling (cold drink is not preferred)
5) be patient, the content is hot and you will eat the whole dumpling in one bite only a minute or two after it is served
6) Of course, it is not all you can eat item and you don't want to get fed up with tens of dumplings (though I and my family always have 6-12 dumplings every time we go there for a treat). 4 dumpling for an adult would be nice and you can try other food too (I recommend stir fry vegetables).

“My favorite Chinese food joint in HK”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

As a HK local, i need to chip in my recommendation as a must try in HK for Chinese food. This is not fine dining - think of this as the Chinese equivalent of a diner or burger joint. However, it is clean, and the food quality is superb. The favors are subtle, the ingredients are fresh and super addicting. Obviously, must try the xiaolongbao - impossibly thin skin, yet never breaks and you count how many folds are on each dumpling - they are all the same. Another must try is the vegetable and meat dumpling - tastes amazing with the chili sauce. The chili sauce itself is the best - super aromatic and clean (I generally hate chili sauce, because they all look so dirty). Anyway, must try if you haven't already. Needless to say, this place is not expensive.

“Not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

What a find. Right next door to the Regal Hong Kong in Causeway Bay. Dumplings, Wontons, Spring Rolls and all the other bite sized dishes. Superb meal, try the noodles in the peanut sauce with spice, not to be missed.Reasonable wine list. Good service. Really good value. Will definitely go back the next time I am in Hong Kong.
