Well, this has changed my impression of airport food. It's one of the best airport food places I've tried :-) Saboten is located inside at the departure terminal after you pass security. It's located at the food hall at the upper level of the departure terminal (Terminal 1).
Oftentimes, I would go for the BBQ meat with rice meals at the airport or a bowl of wanton noodle soup. But this time, I was given a tip to try the Katsu in Saboten. And I was definitely pleased. This is yummy food, and not just for airport food standards, but even better than the good Katsu places I've tried around the world.
I ordered the Katsu plate, which had a piece of pork katsu, chicken katsu and prawn. It came on a tray with soup, salad, and the different sauces, one for meat and the other from the prawn. It also came with a bowl of black and white sesame seeds with a wooden stick to grind them. I knew that it was to be grinded so I did, but I didn't know where to put it so I put a bit on my rice. Apparently, it was meant to be grounded then added to the tonkatsu sauce. I only found out when I googled it afterwards :-)
The Katsu cutlets were so tender, the meat was juicy despite it being fried. The outer layer was very light and crispy, it melts in the mouth. I thought it would be oily but obviously, it was cooked very well and the oil is not absorbed inside the batter. The cutlets were also served on a steel net rack so any excess oil if any were to drip below the rack. But as I said, it wasn't really oily at all.
The prawn was ok, I like the crispy batter, but the tonkatsu is still the best.
The line was not long, unlike the other establishments. The order taker was quick and efficient, so are the staff preparing the dishes. There is a clear organized assembly line. There is a bit of wait (but still fast considering you're getting a freshly cooked meal) to get your food after ordering and paying, but it's worth it, cause it's really delicious.
Price is a bit higher than other fast food places nearby. But again, worth it.
I would really recommend this if you want to have a fast yet great quality meal in the HK airport.
