“Perfect steaks, with first class service and ambiance to match - to go for a very special occasion”
I visited the Grand Hyatt steakhouse with a friend living in Hong Kong, as the restaurant is reputed for steaks and apparently very popular in the local fine dining scene. As a testament to that, she had to reserve weeks in advance to get a table for two of us, so if you're planning for a special occasion I suggest you do the same! The restaurant has a sophisticated, almost romantic atmosphere (not one for the kids I would say), and the seating is well spaced out into different nooks and corners so even if the restaurant is packed, it still appears very private and exclusive.
For starters we had the Steakhouse Salad Bar. This seems to be the signature of the restaurant, and you can actually opt to have this either as a starter or as a main course in itself. I definitely recommend going for this as a starter: we really enjoyed the freshness, quality and variety of salads, cheeses and cured meats on offer. Two of my favorite items were the smoked salmon and serrano ham, freshly sliced right in front of you - both wonderfully delicious. Then the highlight: the steaks of course. I asked for my steak to be done medium rare, and it was perfectly executed (check out the photo to see what I mean): beautiful pinkish red in the middle, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture with every bite. Flawless!
Also worth mentioning is the equally flawless service, starting from the minute we arrived until we stepped out the door. Actually I arrived about 30 minutes before our reservation time, and they showed me to our table and even brought me a load of magazines to read while waiting for my friend to arrive! How thoughtful and observant. And throughout the dinner, service staff also remained highly attentive but not intrusive.
The only thing that might leave you in the slightest bit of a damper for the evening is when you open the menu and look at the prices: yes, it is admittedly rather steep (but then again to be fair, everything in Hong Kong generally is rather steep, so by the relative Hong Kong benchmark, the prices at the Grand Hyatt Steakhouse are really not exorbitant) We spent something in the region of HKD2,000 (that's roughly USD250) for a highly memorable dinner for two, without alcohol. Usually we would order a bottle of wine to go with our steaks, but in this case we decided to leave the drinking to somewhere else after dinner and stick with sparkling water. The wine list prices would have quite easily doubled our bill, and as we were not celebrating anything in particular that evening, we thought to save the splurging for another time!
Overall I'd definitely say that our evening at the Grand Hyatt Steakhouse was a fantastic dinner experience, and not one that I'd forget anytime soon. It may be expensive, but really - given the entire experience of a perfectly prepared meal of the highest quality, generous servings, amazing service and beautiful environment, I would consider it to be very good value-for-money. I would certainly love to go back again, but given the prices, only for an extremely special occasion I reckon! :-)
