“Comfortable, Central.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

Fantastic hotel at a great price in a great location. No wi-fi in room, but lounge on 4th floor has internet. You can walk from Hong Kong Station to the hotel to get to the airport, or for the MTR you can get to Shueng Wan station which is less than a block away.

There are tons of great restaurants - department stores etc. all within walking distance.

Other than Wi-Fi a great hotel.

I stayed at the Bauhinia serviced apartments (part of the Bauhinia Hotel and Apartments block) for about a month. The studio was small but normal for HK standards - it was the furnishings that were slightly tardy and dated. The toilet was spacious but minimally furnished with most fittings old. The gym is small with 2 treadmills and 2 weights machine. Unfortunately the ceiling is so low that if you stand above 1.75m, it is highly unlikely you will be able to use the treadmill.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the serviced apartments was the service standards of the concierge/reception. One particular employee who works at the reception was most unhelpful and rude during my entire stay. I remember one (of the many) incident when I requested for 2 fresh towels mid week as my existing towels had been soiled. He denied my request flatly, explaining in a somewhat righteous manner that towels are only changed on Mondays and Fridays. I insisted that I needed them and I was told that that would be considered a "special request" and that this request will not be entertained next week. It was almost like he was telling me off.

For an apartment that cost HK$23,500 per month, I was appalled by how low the serviced standards were. To be fair, most of the other employees were generally helpful but you really only need one bad apple to ruin the rest. I would strongly discourage expats from renting the place because there are many other serviced apartments around the area that are better run and will give you more value for your money.

The Bauhinia Hotel-Central is a very conveniece base to explore Hk Island. MTR & tram station almost at the doorstep. Walkable distance to HK Airport Express near IFC shopping centre if you don't have plenty of luggage to tow. Similarly is walkable to HK Ferry Terminal.
The room that I had considered big by HK standard. Comfortable bed, free wifi works well.
Plenty of eateries around the hotel.

LOCATION: The BAUHINIA Hotel Central is located at 119-121 Connaught Road Central on Hong Kong island. Upon arrival, you may take the Airport Express to Central MTR Station before transferring to the Island Line & taking the train to Sheung Wan MTR Station. Hotel entrance is not visible nor accessible from Connaught Road. Upon leaving Sheung Wan Station via Exit B, walk towards the Left side of the street, straight on past 1 block & turn Left into Man Wa Lane; hotel entrance is on your Left.

BAUHINIA Hotel is conveniently situated, a quick 2-minute walk from Sheung Wan MTR Station. It is just 1 stop away from Central Station which connects onto the (green) Kwun Tong, (orange) Tung Chung, (red) Tsuen Wan & (blue) Island MTR Lines. To travel from Sheung Wan to Tsim Sha Tsui (where the Art, Science & History Museums are located), transfer at Central Station.

Sheung Wan Station is the terminal for Island Line, along the way are Central & Admiralty (where major banks, corporate offices & swanky boutiques of haute couture brands are located), Causeway Bay (major shopping area with many mega-malls) & Shau Kei Wan (starting point for hiking along Dragon's Back).

The HK-Macau Ferry Terminal (located within Shun Tak Centre) can be reached on foot in under 10 minutes via Sheung Wan MTR Exit D whereas the Star Ferry Piers for travel to the outlying islands (e.g. Lamma & Lantau Islands) are easily accessible from Central MTR Station.

ROOM: We stayed in a fairly spacious Superior Double Room on the 2nd floor. Other than some visible stains on the carpet, it was clean & thoughtfully furnished with all necessary amenities.

The air-conditioned room had a simple yet pleasing decor in cream & maroon. It was furnished with the following: a double bed; 2 small bedside tables with adjustable reading lamps; iPod docking station; a small circular table; a huge multi-channel flatscreen TV; work desk with chair by the window; a side table which can also serve as a luggage rack; minibar stocked with canned drinks & chocolate candy bars; complimentary bottled water (replenished daily) and tea- & coffee-making facilities.

There is a small wardrobe by the bed, within which you can find ample wooden hangers; extra pillows; robes & bedroom slippers; iron & ironing board; a foldable luggage rack & a small in-room safe for your valuables.

We were given a free upgrade to an Executive Room for our last night. The room was similar in layout except that it was almost twice the size. It had a 2-seat sofa in a lounge area where they installed a 2nd flat-screen TV. In addition, there is a chaise longue at the foot of the bed & the wardrobe is much bigger.

BED: The bed was comfortable with clean sheets, blanket & pillows. To conserve energy & water, bed linens are only changed upon request. Extra pillows can be found on the top shelf of wardrobe.

BATHROOM: The Superior Bathroom was of adequate size, clean & brightly lit. It was furnished with the usual: vanity counter with mirror above; wash basin; toilet & a separate shower stall.

Be careful not to turn on the faucet full-blast as the wash basin is quite shallow & a strong gush of water could leave you & the counter in a wet & messy state... The shower-head had strong water pressure & a consistent hot water supply which enabled us to enjoy warm, relaxing showers after a long day of sightseeing.

Adequate clean towels were provided & replaced upon request. Amenities provided were comprehensive: shower gel & body lotion; shampoo & conditioner; shower cap; comb; hand soap; toothbrushes; shaver; cotton buds; mini sewing kit; etc. Hairdryer is stored outside, in the drawer above minibar.

The Executive Bathroom was similar except that it was about double the size & had a bigger washbasin.

F&B: Room rate was not inclusive of daily breakfast & Hotel did not seem to have any F&B outlets on site. There's a Starbucks a short stroll away (across the road) & several local cafes in the vicinity. The nearby Shun Tak Centre also offers plenty of F&B choices. If all you need is a quick bite, there are small bakeries, sandwich kiosks & 7-Eleven convenience stores at most MTR Stations.

SERVICE: Room Reservation, Check-In & Out all proceeded smoothly. The staff here were not exactly warm but generally efficient. The multilingual frontline staff can converse in English, Mandarin & Cantonese.

The Reception staff were quite helpful & obliging, allowing us to stow our luggage before Check-In & after Check-Out. When my friend fell sick during our stay, the staff on duty kindly went out to the street to hail us a taxi & also advised us on which was the nearest hospital to visit. We were also offered a free upgrade to Executive Room for the last night of our stay.

Reservation via hotel booking sites would probably get you much cheaper rates as Hotel's Rack Rate was listed as HK$1,800 but Booking.com quoted us HK$900 (exclusive of 10% service charge) for the same room type.

FACILITIES: Despite being a boutique hotel, BAUHINIA Central is equipped with a meeting room, small gym & self-service (coin-operated) laundry room on its 4th floor. It also offers printing, photocopying & faxing services for business travellers. However, the advertised free Wi-Fi was only available on the 4th floor & not in the room itself.

In SUMMARY: Hotel accommodation in Hong Kong is generally on the expensive side & room size tend to be small. BAUHINIA Central was an exceptionally good find as its clean & comfortable rooms are fairly spacious and rates are reasonable by HK standards.

Room Tip: Superior Double Room is fairly spacious already, no need to pay more for a Deluxe unless having that...

The Bauhinia Central turned out to be good value in a city with expensive hotel rooms. Situated in a side alley near a large department store, and close to the Sheung Wan MTR station, it is well located. The rooms are relatively large for budget hotels in Hong Kong, with great service.

Coming from the airport, it is 10min walk from the Airport Express Hong Kong Station.

However, after booking at Booking.com, when I checked in they raised the price on me. Not by much, but an unpleasant surprise. -1 star for that. 4stars otherwise - good service and a comfortable rooms.

We took airport express into central station (24mins) then just walked to the hotel (5-10min) which wasnt too bad even with 2 luggages with wheels. Its pretty much one straight overhead bridge to the hotel but make sure your headed the right way as there are several exits and walkways.
The rooms were clean, decent size, and had all the functional items you would require. Lounge on 4th floor was good with 2 flat TV's several options for complimentary coffee, reading materials, and 2 internet stations. The gym next door also looked decent for a boutique hotel and usable. No restaurant but not a problem as there are several coffee shops, bakeries, groceries all nearby. If you want something western we found a very good Pizzeria called Jacomax a few streets down, which looked to run by an Italian couple and very authentic. Another Italian called Amante was on the same street and was pretty decent. We had an event at the four seasons next to the IFC mall and was convenient to walk or taxi which was only (25 HKD) Took a day trip to Macau and the ferry terminal was also in walking distance. In the end you don't necessarily get the size or conveniences of a bigger chain hotels, but it had everything we needed and the location couldn't of been better.

HK is rather expensive and rooms are usually very small. The Bauhinia Hotel Central offers a very nice room, big enough to host two people, with a very nice bathroom (huge shower) and all kind of comfort (iPod station, plugs, tea, laundry, coffee machine,..).
The location is right in the city centre near to a MTR stop. You can find starbucks and restaurants everywhere nearby the hotel. Moreover 10mins walking you find the restaurant street (Lan Kwai Fong) which is always interesting :)

Bad points:

1. No view from some rooms since there is a building in front, but it doesn't really matter since you visit the city (moreover there should be one side with a nice view).
2. No wifi connection despite some websites (e.g.: booking.com) confirm there is. However our room on third floor could get a low signal and we were able to use the internet (slow).
