“Need to be fit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012 via mobile

This is one of my favourite walks, on a scale from one to ten it's an eight tough but rewarding, when you get to the top the feeling is fansatics and on a clear day the views are equally rewarding . If you are not fit then don't do it, it will take around 3 to 4 gruling hours

“Fei Ngo Shan (Kowloon Peak)- A nice walk/hike on this 1000ft hill, located among towns in East Kowloon. ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2012 via mobile

Fei Ngo Shan (Kowloon Peak)
- A nice walk/hike on this 1000ft hill, located among towns in East Kowloon.

It's a very popular hill for local hikers for its relatively easy access and beautiful views of the city and the harbor usually through a veil of mist. One can take subway or bus to the closest town, Choi Hung, then walk the uphill street of Clearwater to the trail heads at Fei Ngao Shan Rd or J'ai Shan Rd).

This 2.5mi hike (1-way) is favored by locals. My wife and I had our friends in Choi Hung to thank for telling us about this nice montain. We hiked there one late Feb afternoon that started out sunny, but turned into windy and light rain three hours later. We still had a wonderful time.

The "trails" are actually very narrow, heavily tree-lined, paved one-way streets, mostly without a walkway.  At the trail head by Fei Ngo Shan Rd, there are many huge luxury mansions. About 1/4 of the way up is the famous "Pak Fa Lam", the resting place of Dr. Sun Yat San's mother. Keep walking uphill another 2mi will be the scenic overlook point, which offers a view of the town and harbor below, usually veiled by layers of fog. For the more adventurous, it'd be a pleasure to actually HIKE up another 200 vertical feet on a steeper trail to the Observatory for even more spectacular view. At times, it could be quite windy and foggy in Fei Ngo Shan.

From the scenic overlook, one can either (1) back track the same way down; (2) go down via J'ai Shan Rd, which is also a beautiful, tree-lined narrow street shared by cars;
(3) hike up to the observatory; or (4)  hike to Shantin on another trail.

By the way, besides hikers, people do drive up or take a taxi to the scenic overlook. In our hike that day, due to strong wind and light rain, halfway on our slippery descend on J'ai Shan Rd late in the afternoon, we gave up, flaged down a taxi to get to a restaurant in town for beers and early dinner!
