“Best Hotel in Asia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

We just finished a 3 week trip in Asia. This is my 2nd time in the region and over these trips I have visited 15 5 star properties in China, HK, Thailand and Japan. The Upper House stands apart from the rest. The level of personalized service is unmatched in HK. They make you feel like you are the only guest at all times! The staff remembers your name, and is always there to support and even anticipate your every need. The room is incredible. 800+ sqft in HK is unheard of. The room and bathroom boast complete floor to ceiling views of the city and harbor. The hotel encompasses every modern amenity without ever feeling cold. The room offers surround sound for your iPod, and of course free WiFi and even better, free minibar drinks and snacks (AKA Maxibar). Cafe Gray is mind-blowingly awesome, and deserves a Michelin star ASAP!

The location is stellar and property delightful. We liked this so much, we extended our honeymoon an additional day/night just to stay here for a third night!

A very special thanks for Kate Tai- a very thoughtful and warm guest relations host. Also a special thank you to the rest of the staff- all exceptional!

After staying at Upper House for two nights I tried to think of anything I could criticize. There is not one thing. Superb personal service, spacious and elegant rooms, beautiful design, spectacular views and extremely comfortable beds. If they could put a pool on the roof it would be perfect.

We were lucky enough to stay at the Upper house for two nights : allowing 48 hours to cope with jetlag / do HK and transit to Bali . I had heard this hotel was good but then .. It's a luxury hotel , available at a luxury price . But , dear friends it didn't disappoint . Lets start with the decor
It's one if those places where the perfect finish in wood meets the correspondingly tasteful execution in fabrics . The rooms are large ... The windows offering floor to ceiling"exposure" to this intriguing city . This is spectacularly evident in the bathroom where caution and modesty fly out of the window - you can sit in the bath and observe the vertical world - best at night with bathroom lights off in my opinion ...
The public areas are glamorous and cool with interesting art structures linking rooms ... Hallways don't seem to exist ... Just another " gallery" ...
Location - wise you are at the heart of the central distinct ... We walked MILES in that 48 hours even though transport is diet cheap ... We needed to stretch after that long flight and make ourselves properly tired ...
You can access pacific palisades mall ( Gucci ... Prada ... You name it ...) and the mtr ( HK underground ) in 2 minutes flat ) the star ferry to Kowloon us a ten minute walk ...
The staff WALKED us to the mtr one evening when we looked a little sceptical ... And rang ahead to book us a space fir cocktails and a view of the "light symphony " which illuminates HK's buildings and can only be seen from the mainland ...
Marcel and his team could not be faulted fir their smiles and genuine willingness to help . Yes if course it's expensive but it's an experience you won't forget . I promise .

It's all been said here. Understated, refined elegance. No pretension. Totally personal service. The ultimate Hong Kong experience start to finish. Cafe Gray above the best spot in HK. My absolute favourite. The word keeps spreading further about this absolute gem. And so it should.

We stayed over the new year period 12/13.

The Upper House came highly recommended by a fellow well-travelled friend of mine who rated it in her top 5 hotels of all time.

I thoroughly agree.

The personal arrival/check-in process is fantastic and certainly sets the tone for what the hotel is going for: personal, private, premium.
The minute the door opened to our (very spacious) room, we were gobsmacked. Panoramic views of the Hong Kong harbour from both the bedroom and the bathroom; lovely dressing area, great attention to detail in the design choices, perfect sitting area for ladies to get ready.

The complimentary options in the mini-bar are a great touch (the almonds and M&Ms are addictive though!) but the product in the bathrooms (moisturiser etc) is outstanding, and replaced every day.

The top floor restaurant is a particularly fantastic place to take in breakfast - overlooking all of Hong Kong. Beautiful.

The location in amongst the great retail hub of Pacific Place offers every shopping option you need - the Lane Crawford is a must-see!

One street back from Hong Kong Park - offers a great running route.

Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Hong Kong.

Am on here for a business trip and am just looking for a place to have a bite at 10+ pm. Cafe gray is still open and it is well known.. So I came in alone for dinner and drink.ordered a beef tenderloin and Bellini. Price was affordable but service was bad.. (Friday?!)

I wanted a window seat and was told they will lookout for me. When I see people leaving.. they said tables were reserved. After a while.. tables were available but no staff offered a change ( maybe cause my food were served) still... they should ask.

I am alone.. at least they could do was to make me feel much more at ease.

Nuts were good. That's all.

Many thanks for your review.

I am equally disappointed to learn of your recent experience at Cafe Gray Deluxe.

Do contact me personally on marcelthoma@swirehotels.com as I would like to understand more from you on why we failed to meet your expectations in our restaurant.

I am very much looking forward to hearing from you again.

We have stayed at lots of very nice hotels. The Upper House was by far the best experience we have ever had. From the moment we checked in they could not do enough things to assist you. All the rooms are just so nice (veiws and very large) and the baths are incredible. We check out tomorrow and just got a call from the Assistant Director or Guest Experience (Kristine), just asking how our day was. If you are ever in Hong Kong and want a 4 or 5 star hotel skip the Ritz and the other normal names and stay at the Upper House.
Bobby

Room Tip: The Studio 70 rooms are great very large standard room. We like this one since it has a direct view...
