“Upper House Does not Disappoint! We Will Be Back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

We arrived in the middle of the night after a long flight from Los Angeles (with stopover in Seoul, Korea). I am glad we decided to use the hotel’s airport transportation since we knew we would be arriving tired at that time and did not want to have to locate a taxi. The hotel emailed us detailed instructions on where to meet the driver, and he was waiting for us as soon as we exited with our bags. He was holding a card up with our names.

We stayed at the Upper House for three nights February 22, 23 and 24. After we left the Upper House we went on a Silversea cruise which departed from Hong Kong and stopped at ports in Viet Nam, Bangkok, and finally Singapore where we stayed three nights before flying home.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Upper House and it was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation. There is not much more that I can add from what others have written. We loved the hotel! The rooms are beautiful and the service is excellent. The bathrooms are beautiful with a wonderful limestone shower with no door (not necessary), rain shower head, and nice Ren bath products. The “maxi-bar” is a nice treat with complimentary M&M’s and other treats, and beverages in the fridge. We did not have a very clear harbor view but the view nonetheless was quite spectacular. We stared at all the high-rises and had a glimpse of the harbor. They upgraded us from the Studio 70 to Studio 80 which was very nice. No detail is overlooked, with the various controls and switches, various plugs for the laptop and other devices, and convenient way to close all the window blinds at night with the touch of a button.

Two small items that could use improvement (1) missing from the room is a make-up mirror. There is really no place to put on your make-up as lighting over the sink areas is very dim, and (2) the outlet to plug in the hair dryer was inside the closet so you had to stand up and dry your hair by the closet.

We found the close proximity to Pacific Place and the MTR stop very convenient. It was our first time in Hong Kong and it was easy to get around. It was nice to return to the peaceful vibe of the hotel after touring around the city.

As we were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary we made dinner reservations long in advance at Café Grey. The view and service are truly outstanding but to be honest we were a little disappointed in the food. I guess we were expecting it to be great. It was good, but not great. They did bring us an anniversary dessert with candle which was very nice.

We would definitely return to the Upper House!

Many thanks for your lovely and very personal review on tripadvisor.com

We are much honored to hear that you consider The Upper House one of your highlights of your recent trip around Asia.

We have taken note of your comments about the missing make up mirror in the room; we will certainly ensure to have one placed for you upon your next visit.

I do apologize for the sub-par experience in Café Gray Deluxe. I would very much like to understand more about your perception of service during breakfast; please do email me on marcelthoma@swirehotels.com and allow me to contact you back personally to discuss.

I am very much looking forward to hearing from you again.

Sincerely

As a big fan of their Beijing Opposite House/East establishments I was eager to check out their HK sister Hotel. I was definitely not disappointed...these guys get the power of genuine service. Never easy to pull off consistently, but when you do, separates you from the pack. Swire Hotels by far my preferred choice, just hope they create a few more in the coming years.

We just got back from a week in Hong Kong and the best part about our trip was the hotel. It was world class in every way. Hong Kong is a big and sometimes chaotic city, but as soon as you step into the "lobby" (it's more of a small intimate welcome area), you are protected from the hustle and bustle and ushered into a cocoon of calm/zen vibes. We arrived at 7am after a long overnight flight, so we were pretty excited to get an early check in (try THAT in an American hotel!) and find out we were upgraded to an Upper House Suite with Harbour views. Since we had our 15 year old with us, we appreciated the extra space - the room is HUGE. I showed our room to all my Hong Kong clients and even they were flabbergasted by the size, tasteful decoration and SPACE - a foyer, a living room with small kitchen (loved the "maxi" bar as it's nice to have coffee/tea/beer and snacks for FREE all week without feeling nickle and dimed), huge bedroom, gigantic bathroom with several rooms including the "bath" room with amazing shower. Every room has a view as well. You can control everything through an Itouch that comes with the room and the lighting buttons are super cool along with the curtain controls - very modern and efficient.

The service was so high it's almost hard to give examples - if you even HINTED at something, your wish would come true. We said we were "tired" from our day's traveling so the first night they brought us warm milk and cookies. The second night they presented us with a beautiful leather Upper House tote bag (which was perfect for bringing stuff home in!), the 3rd night after seeing us go for a run, they ran up a note with a brand new book of hiking and running trails in Hong Kong. They made reservations for us even at hard to get restaurants and when a room service (well, bar service - they offered to bring us our drinks when we requested) call took an extra 10 minutes, they brought us our drinks free of charge. It got to the point where we were actually afraid to say anything as we didn't want them to do any more nice favors for us (what if I had said I really wished we had a pet? They probably would have brought us a new dog!) That's how good the service was. It's lovely to NOT have to pass through a huge hectic lobby (as is the case everywhere else - the Peninsula, Intercontinental, Mandarin Oriental...) and be in a boutique "smaller" hotel where you are greeted by name every time you walk in. The location could not be better as Pacific Place is next door which is a super upscale mall with tons of restaurants, an MTR stop (one stop from Central) and easy walk everywhere. There is even a cool running trail (once you walk up the VERY steep hill to get there!) which gives you a better view than the peak of the entire city. Did I mention the awesome Cafe Grey which has terrific city views, great breakfast, lunch and dinner and a fun bar? It's on the 49th floor and I believe the Upper House has 12 floors or so on the top of the JW Marriot building (but a totally separate entrance - I didn't even realize we shared the building!) We really enjoyed the gym too - very clean, very nice with several new machines (treadmill, ellipitcals, rowing, free weights) and open all the time with your key.

I just can't say enough about our experience. EVERY staff member (I wish I could list out their names) was stellar, Marcel, the manager, was superb and very friendly and helpful all week, the facility is beyond (try finding a room this size in any other hotel), the atmosphere is very relaxing - after years of staying in "nice" hotels around the world (though not in Asia), this has set a new standard that will be impossible to beat. We've all been terribly spoiled and it's going to be hard to get back to life at home where there's not someone to attend to our every wish. Thanks to the Upper House for a life changing experience. You guys are the new standard bearers in the small/boutique hotel world.

Room Tip: Nice to have a view of the Harbour but city view is fine too. All the rooms are "upper" fl...

Slick staff and styling make this the only choice when staying in Hong Kong.
The rooms are huge, well equipped with great bathrooms with shower views overlooking the harbour and city.
Concierge were incredibly efficient as always planning a day trip to Guangzhou for me by car and train with all details, addresses and information in Chinese and English and nothing was ever a problem for them and all done with a genuine smile.
Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone be it for business or pleasure as ticks many boxes.

Stayed here for two nights at the end of February, mainly to celebrate my sister-in-law's 50th birthday, which coincidentally was also my birthday. The hotel upgraded us and our party to two 2-bedroom penthouse suites as they knew of the occasion. The suites were very large in size, appreciating that this is Hong Kong, and were furnished in an understated elegant design and fully stocked with amenities and treats.

From the airport pick up to the drop off, the front desk to the Cafe staff -- service was outstanding. Even the daily housekeeping and evening turn down service were very discreet. The breakfast served at Cafe Grey was excellent.

As noted by others, the location is great with a shopping mall and an MRT station underground. One could also easily walk to Central. I have stayed at all the other hotels at Pacific Place (Island Shangrila, Conrad and JW Marriott) and The Upper House is in a different league altogether. It is more intimate in size (number of rooms), yet the suite sizes are generous and the service is more personal.

My only caveat for those staying at the penthouse level is that one could sometimes hear the footsteps and movement of chairs coming from Cafe Grey upstairs.

Regardless, this hotel is highly recommended when visiting Hong Kong!

PS: The hotel also sent a birthday cake to our suite - many thanks!

We are much honored to learn that “our house has become your home away from home”.

Chef Gray not only runs our restaurant but all the menu items on our room service menu are prepared by him. We officially have set a limit on published items; we are however always happy to offer additional dishes if requested which are not featured on the menu.

Please do let me know when you are visiting next; it will be my pleasure to personally look after your reservation as well as offer a tailor made room service menu for you.

Safe travels and until soon again!

I have stayed in many hotels in many cities and none compare to the Upper House in Hong Kong. The Andre Fu designed interiors, effortless customer service and the attention to detail throughout every aspect of the hotel is second to none. The outdoor lawn is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong city life and Cafe Gray has the best view, the best food and the the best service in a city full of the highest grade of culinary offerings in the world.

I didn't want to leave...thank you to Kristina, Marcel and all of your team, you know how to make the Upper House feel like home.

Many thanks for your review on tripadvisor.com about “our house”.

Kristina and I are indeed very lucky to work with a team who is so passionate about service – and it is wonderful to know that this passion was visible to you during your recent visit with us.

The offerings in Hong Kong are indeed very sophisticated; it is therefore even more pleasing to know that you rate us to be “the best” of the lot….
