Most of my friends from US, UK or Sri Lanka who visited Hong Kong in the first half of 2012 were fond of the delicacies served by Hang Fa Lau. The decoration is not particularly grand or cosy and size of their restaurants not big. The selling point is 'inexpensive local delicacies'. Expect to pay around US$3-5 per snack/dessert, US$4-9 for tea set and US$8-10 for set lunch/dinner. Bilingual menus available.
Hang Fa Lau has branches in Hong Kong and Kowloon, the more convenient ones for tourists are at Central (near the escalator to Mid-levels at Cochrane Street, easily accessible from the pedestrian walkway connected to International Finance Mall and MTR Hong Kong Station ) and Terminal 2 of Hong Kong Airport (at the far end of the first floor).
For those who want a taste of local snacks and traditional Chinese desserts in "Hong Kong style", you may wish to try snacks such as fried radish cake (squares of radish strips and preserved pork, lightly fried), deep fried ling fish balls (self explanatory), fried glutinous rice rolls with XO sauce (traditional snack in a spicy version: rice sheets steamed then rolled and cut into small pieces, fried with XO sauce and dipped in soya sauce), deep fried beancurd dices etc. Those who has a sweet tooth may want to try traditional desserts such as osmanthus pudding (translucent jelly like pudding with real flowers inside), milk pudding with ginger (a mixture of ginger 'juice' and milk), double boiled milk pudding (self-explanatory), dumplings with mashed sesame in sweet soup etc. For set lunch/dinner, most of my friends recommended spicy beef brisket (belly) and curry with rice, together with a cup of tea with milk (again in Hong Kong style)/coffee or soya milk.
Regrettably, other popular local delicacies such as fishball and squid in curry sauce, egg puff and Taiwanese tea with milk and 'pearls' are not available here. In case you want to try, these snacks are available in small eateries at Wanchai, North Point, Mongkok and Prince Edward etc. Enjoy!
