“Fascinating place to see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

A must see if you are on a river cruise on the Yangtze. There are a lot of steps to climb at this site. There are several temples associated with Fengdu and you keep climbing up steps to see them all. The older ones are at the top. Some of the lower ones were rebuilt after the originals were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Still - it is worth seeing.

“Take the ultimate test here. Will you go to heaven or hell!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Fengdu Ghost city is a very interesting tourist attraction in China and is popular with cruise boats being on the Yangtze River near Chongqing. It’s all to do with the concept of the underworld or hell in Chinese mythology or Buddhism and is known as “The realm of the dead.”
Fengdu is a sort of cross between Madame Tussauds, the ghost train and the house of horrors and demonstrates what will happen if you don’t sort yourself out. There are models of demons ripping the stomachs out of sinners and wholesale slaughter. It can seem a bit tame after a lifetime of blood and guts they serve up in the west in films, tv and games like Grand Theft Auto( to name but a few)!
It’s a great little trip and well worth the 700 odd step climb to the top of the mountain. If nothing else it’ll walk off your breakfast and possibly scare the pants off you. Naaahh not really. But if nothing else the souvenir shops here are worth the visit. I do love tourist shops and all their tacky stuff. T shirt prices are very reasonable here.

Beware that at peak times it does get very popular with Chinese tour groups who shout into microphones and jostle and bump. It can be awful. I joke not. You’ve never known crowds like this.
Close to the top you will find the “Bridge to Heaven”. Now our guide told us, (so don’t quote me on this) that if you successfully walk over the bridge and believe me it’s not difficult, and don’t fall into the pit of vipers below (there aren’t any),) then you will go to heaven. Her details were a bit sketchy, so I had reasonable suspicion to doubt that it would happen. Besides, I’m quite looking forward to checking hell out.
When at the top buy yourself a photo of you crossing the Bridge, as they are so cheap. ($4 US).

“Interesting, but how authentic?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

A fascinating place, so long as you accept that virtually all of it is a modern reconstruction.
It is a 400+ steps climb, so not suitable for the less ambulant.
The Ghost City is on the cruise ships' itinerary, so is always crowded.
There are a huge number of impressive and often grotesque statues; it is helpful having a guide to explain them, along with the mythology and superstitions related to the site (why there are so many thresholds, which foot to step onto a bridge with or into a building, for example)

“They are building a second one next door to handle demand. Go elsewhere”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

We visited this as part of a three gorges cruise. Our advice is don't bother.

We visited with an Australian who had been 10 years earlier. Even then it had been rebuilt/remodelled. He hardly recognised it because so much had been rebuilt, moved, altered. If there is still anything left over 30 years old then neither he nor our guide could find it :-(

Essentially this is a 1980s, 1990s, 2000s recreation specifically for the tourist market and there are thousands there at any time. The pace up and around is a shuffle as you follow a guide with a flag for your group.

From the bottom or top you can see construction proceeding apace on the top of the next hill of another pagoda and a giant stone head plus other buildings. When we asked we were told this wasn't open yet but would provide additional capacity for more tourists.

“Spirits of the Underworld”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

This is a part of the Yangtze river cruise, all ships stop here, so it gets very crowded. The ghost city is up quite a steep hill and a lot of it has been rebuilt due to a fire. It is fairly interesting, there are temples to the underworld where spirits dwell and statues of nasty ghosts along the roadside reminding people to live a better life, or else. At the top are three bridges and everyone crosses the middle one, which is the Judgement Bridge, if you cross it in the correct way you can lead a favoured life, but bad people will fall into the pool which represents a bloody future. The other two bridges represent Health & Wealth.
It wasn't an exciting tour, it was more a time fill in on the cruise
