The old Cíqìkǒu Ancient Town has a very distinctive, fascinating, dark coloured architectural style dating back to the Ming dynasty (a bloody long time ago). You walk through fascinating cobbled streets past small shops selling...well your guess is as good as mine. Very Chinese!!! Noodley things, cakey things they hit with hammers and catapults (this was a surprise). This and much, much more.
There is a horse you can hire which will climb the steps to the top of the hill. However I wasn't convinced that it was treated particularly well.
Check out the temple at the hilltop for a stunning view (5Yuan). The main building apparently dates back 1000 years but beware don’t go within 50 metres of the toilet there. I can’t possibly describe how bad it was, and I’ve been to some pretty bad toilets in India. I’m sure it hasn’t been cleaned for 999 years.
Get there by taxi as it’s quite cheap, (try 25 Yuan max) from town.
