“Great site, good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

First time to this city. A nice familiar feel to the hotel. The room (exec floor) was simple and reasonably well appointed. The design of the bathroom, constrained by the curvature of the outside wall, was interesting, with the toile pedestal backing on to an outside facing (low sill) window. The internal restaurants were ok, with the Chinese style restaurant (externally managed), rated very highly by my Chinese colleagues.

Dear MarkL,

Thank you for your review and preferring JW Marriott Hotel for your first visit to Chongqing.

Besides the Chinese Restaurant, managed by Yangtze Island, our Marriott-managed Japanese Restaurant Mikado is certainly worth a visit as well as our fine-dining steakhouse Manhattan on level 39.

I am very happy that your stay was satisfactory and I am looking forward to welcoming you back on your second trip.

Kind regards,

Frank Sanders – General Manager

An impressive lobby greets you, but not a seat to be had. Our room was fine, really comfy bed. For China, this is a very good hotel. Breakfast was good, but when we ate an evening meal in the same restaurant (Marriott Cafe) we were very disappointed with it.

It was not cheap and very basic for a hotel of this calibre. I ordered a salad which was meant to have "cheese" on it. I had a few lettuce leaves, two cherry tomatoes, and they forgot the cheese. When I brought this to their attention, they came back with about three of the tiniest pieces of blue cheese (which I dislike anyway) on another plate. The very pleasant chef did come to speak to me and rectified it by giving us a free fresh mango dessert each. We also ordered a drink which we were later told was not available, but we were still charged for it. We didn't want to make a fuss about that because of the 'free' desserts but it was just slack and the staff seemed unorganised.

The staff here also spoke minimal, if any, English, esp. in this restaurant. This is a bit of an anomaly, because yes, you are in China! But it is considered a 'Western' hotel, where many Westerners stay and for that reason, I feel the staff should have even a very basic level of English, like my basic level of Chinese.

Also for the three nights we stayed here, the entire front entry was blocked off to any traffic - taxis, tour buses etc, because an 'important' guest was staying there. The chaos that was caused by this was ridiculous and in fact, any guest staying there is just as important as the next and deserved to be able to drive up to the lobby entry especially when you are unloading or loading luggage instead of being unceremoniously dumped on the street, and having to cross the busy road on a bend. Stopping taxis and other vehicles to get in or alight caused havoc especially in the peak hours. It was just ridiculous - only in China!

Other than that, we would definitely stay here again as you would have to imagine that such inconvenience wouldn't happen too often (?) and it really is a great location in the centre of town. And when you visit Chongqing, make sure you visit Ci Qi Kou old village. It was fun!

Dear HappyTravelsQld from Surfers Paradise, Australia,

Thank you for staying with us during your travels to Chongqing and for the detailed write-up.

I was pleased to read that your stay was satisfactory and that you are coming back on a future trip.

We have had a President staying with us last month and the China Security Forces decided on strict safety measures, especially during the time that the President was moving in and out of the hotel. My apologies for the inconvenience.

I will let Executive Chef Yuri know that you liked his mango deserts but that he also needs to brush up the salad recipes with his team.

Thank you again and I am looking forward to meeting you upon your next trip!

Kind regards,

Frank Sanders – General Manager

As I arrived to the hotel the service was excellent. they offered me free internet if i joined the hotels "mileage program". Staff at the front desk and restaurants and bars spoke english. Bellboys and cleaning staff were very polite and knew few phrases in english. I had some problems with the phone as ordering a wakeup call was not that easy and also there was no mention which number to call if i needed front desk. Room was large and the bathroom also. It had separate shower and bathtub. There were good toiletries ( shampoo, conditioner etc..) and showers worked well ( hot water and enough pressure). Hotel is located next to metrostation (and underground shopping) and one block from the shopping street with all designer stores and local departmentstores. Many nice restaurants and massage parlours near hotel. Breakfast was excellent, good JW Marriott coffee machines, staff could also get me tasty hot chocolate which is not typical in China. Chef doing the eggs, western buffet, asian buffet, 6 different juices, nice atmosphere. If you sat on the sofa the table felt too high but on the chair it was perfect. Chairs were good to sit in, not too soft and the back was good. Checkout was as easy as checkin. A very nice experience and hope to stay at that hotel also during my next visit

Room Tip: Try to get as high as possible as the view is fantastic

Dear Atro from Helsinki, Finland,

Thank you for your great comments and this is exactly what we are trying to achieve in terms of service and guest satisfaction.

I am glad you enjoyed also the complimentary internet which we are offering to all Marriott Rewards members; including the newly joined ones!

Earlier this year we have upgraded our amenity-line to the luxurious spa brand “Aromatherapy” and there is indeed a noticeable difference compared to the previous products.

I look forward to welcoming you back!

Kind regards,

Frank Sanders – General Manager

This hotel is apparently the top-rated in Chongqing. By no means is it deluxe. The rooms are average, there is no seating in the lobby area and it seems like a 3 star US hotel.
On the other hand, the location is great and you can easily walk downtown. You can also visit the local market just down the block.
Hope that you have patience if you do not speak Chinese. It is nearly impossible to communicate with the reception and concierge desks.

Dear Shapgo from Hartsdale, New York,

Thank you for staying with us and I regret that you encountered some language difficulties.

We are actually trying to balance our duty rosters as good as possible in order to ensure that we spread the best English-speakers more of less evenly over both morning and afternoon shifts.

We do have several seats in the lobby and have recently placed some more right outside of Marriott Café. Additionally the seating in the Lobby Lounge may be utilized as well, even without consumption, and is now open from 7am onwards.

Thank you for your valuable comments and I hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back upon your next trip to Chongqing.

Kind regards,

Frank Sanders – General Manager

Still 1 of CQ's besrt hotels. Its the location that wins it for this hotel. the hotel is classy but not modern. The pool is especially showing its age. Good service from the staff but not exceptional. Overall no compliants & will definately stay here again for location, value & good service. Obviously well managed & perhaps the top execs need to pump a few more dollars in to give the staff the the advantage they deserve.

Good value for the money at this luxury property. Rooms are nice and there is a great health club and spa. Food is very good at the restaurants, but overpriced. excellent buffet breakfast. It would be helpful if the staff spoke better English, but Frank, the dutch general manager seems to be omnipresent. There is no doubt who the captain of the ship is at this hotel and Frank lends a wonderful feeling of hospitality to the property. I would stay here again. Club lounge is excellent and worth the price.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor and enjoy the great views of the skyline at night.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights, but would like to have stayed longer. The lobby is gorgeous, the rooms beautiful and the down pillows were the best.

I was in Chongqing to embark on a river boat down for a trip down the Yangtze. Chongqing is hilly and incredibly smoggy, so more than two days was not in my plan.

However, if you do end up on this bustling city, the JW Marriott is the place to stay.
