“Lovely and friendly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We spent 3 nights here with our 2 daughters in their twenties.
Had a time great -charming place!
We didn't want to be in a chain hotel and so pleased we stayed here. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Recommended a few lovely restaurants to us and we also ate in the hotel-we arrived late the first night and although food was finished for the evening they kindly cooked for us.
Breakfasts were delicious-such a choice -and you have to try the egg tarts !!!!
Tea ,coffee, bottled water in rooms, comfy beds, good showers.
This hotel is in the hutong district which is the older part of Beijing-so the taxis don't get down the streets often, but you can soon get out to a wider street and catch one. Its not dirty-just a bit dusty in some areas and great to see what`s going on in peoples lives. If you worry about things being different then stay in a chain hotel-such as Marriott or Mercure, but then you wont see the real China and support local business! Very safe area -easy to walk to restaurants and the hotel will help you arrange tours or shows.
Thanks to all the staff for such a pleasant stay!

Room Tip: We found the beds small for us (we have a 6ft bed) and a lot of the beds are against the wall so you...

Ok, this is rated number one on trip advisor. I disagree. it is a good hotel, yes. But number 1 NO way.
friendly staff,, great door men and bell hops. good pre trip communication via internet. good restaurants nearby.
but, some of the bad things. small rooms, not a great location, you have an 40 minute hike to forbidden city., they would not let 2 people stay in a single room. cold food for breakfast.. I had a leaky sink in bathroom, drained on the floor, the refrigerator did not work first night, spoiling food.

I maybe would stay here again and I might recommend this place also. but it is not number 1. I can not believe this rating. too many nicer hotels in Beijing than to rate this number 1. No parking available. taxi has a hard time finding this place. Not to close to subway line.

Room Tip: cant help ya there. but i would request a ground floor room

This is a great place to stay if you want a piece of history. Tucked away in an alleyway, living in the same environment as locals, being within walking distance to Tianeman Square and the Forbidden City, and close to the subway made for a great location. The service is great, particularly from Moose, Jaklyn, Sabrina, Nancy and Michael. You feel like you leave behind friends when you say goodbye. We stayed in the wedding suite which was perhaps the only room which didn't open onto the courtyard which was a drawback as the room was very dark. However, it was beautifully furnished and comfortable.

Room Tip: Room 288 does not open onto the courtyard. Dark all the time - perhaps may suit some but we would pr...

When we decided to visit Beijing, a friend who had been there recently and who regretted staying at a large western hotel advised us to consider a hutong house. We're very glad we did.

Beijing is effectively two cities in one. It's modern, clean & busy with wide roads, impressive buildings and amazing infrastructure. But threaded in amongst that is the Beijing of 20 years ago -- narrow laneways with people living pretty humble lifestyles. If you just stick to the major roads, tourist attractions and boulevards, you might even miss the 'other' dimension to the city. Or you might have a hutong tour for a couple of hours and 'see' it, but not be amongst it.

Staying in a hutong house like the Double Happiness Courtyard hotel lets you live in a clean and comfortable oasis inside a hutong. You'll see plenty of the big & modern side of Beijing anyway, but staying here will mean you'll also connect with 'older' Beijing. If you stay in a western hotel, you may as well be anywhere.

The accommodation at the Double Happiness is great. Clean, comfortable beds, modern bathroom. Yes, the 'restaurant' is small but you need to understand that in the hutong it's pretty rare for houses to even have their own toilet, and here you are staying in a room with it's own marble bathroom. The building is some hundreds of years old, so inevitably there will be some creaks. But it's the real deal.

The staff are friendly, helpful, fun and enthusiastic.

If you can't book a room at this hotel, then for goodness sake make sure you find another hutong courtyard house and don't stay in a big western hotel.

Room Tip: If you're intending to make use of a guide/translator while you're in Beijing, let the hotel...

The Hotel has a unique Chinese boutique feel and while it's not situated in the most central location it is close enough to most of the major tourist areas. The thing that makes the hotel stand out is the excellent staff that provide fantastic service and speak good English. All the staff are very helpfull but special praise must go to Nancy who went out of her way to help us get the most out of Beijing.

If you are used to staying in the usual downtown western style hotel but looking for something that will give you the Hutong experience then Double Happiness is great. An old general's house has been transformed into a guest house: lovely inner courtyard with little stairways leading in all directions and red lanterns everywhere. The rooms vary but are all clean and decorated with traditional Chinese furniture. I was surprised at how quiet it was given the population density. The young friendly staff make this place: all very helpful and keen to make your stay as delightful as possible. They will organize tours and drivers. It is also quite close to Dongsi Station.
