“More of a home than a hotel :)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

It is not at all like any western chain hotel; expect something completely different- A traditional Chinese house converted to a nice homely small hotel. The best thing about the hotel is the very personal touch which its wonderful staff adds. Actually that is perhaps the best thing about it. Stay there if you want to experience real Beijing. You cannot find taxis to and from the hotel as as easy as you would outside a big hotel. However one could walk to the main road which is five minutes away and wait for a cab.Metro station is not too far but not too close either especially if you are carrying shopping bags. It was nice to enjoy dinner in nice and cozy 'The Bar' resturant within the hotel. The staff could help with arranging tours to different attractions but we chose to go on our own, Taxi from airport costs around 70 but I had o give more to the cab driver as he was not ready to take cab down the alley and wanted to drop us on the main road. Rooms were cozy even in the winter.

Room Tip: We booked a twin room but it was very small. Should book a family room.

Our family stayed in a Luxury Wedding Suite and a Happy Family Suite for one night just to experience this much talked-about hotel which is ranked 3rd out of 4771 hotels in Beijing.

Honestly speaking, the location of the hotel is between old alleys and a four storey old apartment; the compound is very small, at times claustrophobic. However, once you are inside the hotel, it is quite a different world.

The decor and furniture of the hotel is very quaint and exquisite. Having seen the emperor's and his concubines' bedrooms at the Forbidden City, it was quite exciting to be sleeping in one that was 'similar'. Although both rooms were not as spacious as the online photos had shown to be (for example, if you have 3 persons in the room you cannot help but get into each other's way) and the beds were smaller than queen size, the whole unusual atmosphere would more than compensate for the short-comings. However, to make it even more authentic, the hotel should offer a choice of the traditional wooden pillows rather than the modern ones. The room has good heating system and hot water shower that are well poised for the cold winter.

Service-wise there are already many reviews. Nonetheless, I wish to highlight that the hotel could send a trishaw to pick up/drop off your luggages at the main road as taxis will not be able to maneuver in the small alleys. The walk in is about 200m. Jimmy's service is particularly proactive and outstanding. The breakfast was just ok, not great, and we were charged an additional RMB 50 for a 6th person.

On hindsight, we did not really get to enjoy the place because we checked in at noon, left for sight-seeing and only returned at 10pm to sleep. My teens said we should have stayed for 2 nights so that we can really experience and not just sample the environment. To stay for 3 nights would be a bit of a stretch I think.

Btw, from our observation, 90% of the hotel guests are non-Chinese; that probably explained for the 5* ratings and 3rd position.

A charming traditional courtyard home converted into hotel in one of old Beijing's hutongs. The rooms are comfortable and furnished in a classic Chinese style. We appreciated the fact that it is truly a non-smoking hotel. The front desk staff speak very good English, are friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet has a large selection of Chinese dishes, dim sum and a few western items like bacon, eggs and cereal. We spent 7 days there and found it conveniently located to many of the sites, buses and the metro. We booked a tour to the Great Wall from the front desk and it was a memorable experience with an English speaking guide, comfortable bus, 3 hours on The Wall and a great meal at Mr. Yang's.

Jaclyn, Jimmy and DeDe and the rest of the Double Happiness staff went out of their way to help make our stay enjoyable. I highly recommend this hotel for your Beijing travels.

This hotel was a great find. The Hotel is clean and the ambiance is fantastic. It is on a little side street that is very safe and the people that live and do business here are very friendly.
The hotel has a full size bar & restaurant and everyone speaks English or at least gives a good try. Taxis are cheap and the drivers are honest as are most of the businesses. The Double Happiness is very reasonably priced as are the prices in the bar and restaurant, There are shopping areas in walking distance. ( 2 blocks )

Room Tip: There is a large courtyard for your enjoyment, so every room has a "view".

I have been searching for a hotel near city center with WiFi, good western breakfast, English speaking staff with good rating and acceptable price. The choices were limited and decided to try that hotel (For US$ 100/ per night/2 persons). We took a taxi from airport costing RMB 116; though I had hotel map , name and directions written in English and chinese, it seems it was still difficult to find. It was about 400 meters from the main Road after passing a police quarters.
Rooms are very small with little accessories. Limited space for luggage, limited space for hanging clothes. It was pretty cold inspite the centeral heating system and assisting small split unit, it was still cold, toilet was colder. We asked the staff for more help, they gave an extra electric fan, that did the trick ( It was minus 13 centigrade outside). In order to go to Reception or dining room, you have to walk in open spaces; not conditioned.
We visited today the silk market; we had great difficulty to get a Taxi back. The drivers refuse when they see the map. One agreed to take us for RMB 20.00, we agreed, then he gave me RMB 80.00 requesting RMB 100.00 back, I refused and offered him RMB 20 as his money was fake. He dropped us in the street.
In retrograde thinking, other hotels as Holiday Inn would be better choice, cheaper, easy access, near subway etc, except if some-one likes trying chinese style for a night or so.

I really enjoyed my stay at DHCH. The location is fantastic and the hutong is a great snapshot into Beijing life. The staff were fantastic and very accommodating. The room was very clean and there was water provided every morning. The water was hot, the sheets were crisp. A couple of nights into my stay, there was an empty room next to mine used as a store room, and I'm pretty sure there was a cat in there. I alerted the front desk, but the noise stopped when they came to investigate. The next night, and for the rest of my stay, I could hear rats burrowing through the roof. Again, I alerted the front desk, but there wasn't really much they could do. This pretty much kept me awake for the next couple of nights, but I stupidly put up with it on the basis that it is an historic place and this is bound to happen. There were a lot of room renovations going on when I was there. The breakfast is fantastic and definitely no complaints re heating (it was quite cold when I was there). I was travelling solo and was doing some very long days of sight-seeing, so it was nice to be able to come home and sink down in that comfortable bed. It's about 30 mins walk to Wangfujing St/Donghuamen night market, and Dongsi station is VERY well-placed to be able to navigate the city! All in all, a good stay!

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in December in a snowing and freezing Beijing. And yet, I had a wonderful time, partly thanks to this very nice and traditional hotel, and to its staff.
If you are looking for a five star luxury hotel, then this is not the place for you.
But if you are looking for a true Beijing experience, for around 50 RMB per night, then this is the place for you.
I will stay there next time I come to Beijing and recommend it greatly..
