Our family stayed in a Luxury Wedding Suite and a Happy Family Suite for one night just to experience this much talked-about hotel which is ranked 3rd out of 4771 hotels in Beijing.
Honestly speaking, the location of the hotel is between old alleys and a four storey old apartment; the compound is very small, at times claustrophobic. However, once you are inside the hotel, it is quite a different world.
The decor and furniture of the hotel is very quaint and exquisite. Having seen the emperor's and his concubines' bedrooms at the Forbidden City, it was quite exciting to be sleeping in one that was 'similar'. Although both rooms were not as spacious as the online photos had shown to be (for example, if you have 3 persons in the room you cannot help but get into each other's way) and the beds were smaller than queen size, the whole unusual atmosphere would more than compensate for the short-comings. However, to make it even more authentic, the hotel should offer a choice of the traditional wooden pillows rather than the modern ones. The room has good heating system and hot water shower that are well poised for the cold winter.
Service-wise there are already many reviews. Nonetheless, I wish to highlight that the hotel could send a trishaw to pick up/drop off your luggages at the main road as taxis will not be able to maneuver in the small alleys. The walk in is about 200m. Jimmy's service is particularly proactive and outstanding. The breakfast was just ok, not great, and we were charged an additional RMB 50 for a 6th person.
On hindsight, we did not really get to enjoy the place because we checked in at noon, left for sight-seeing and only returned at 10pm to sleep. My teens said we should have stayed for 2 nights so that we can really experience and not just sample the environment. To stay for 3 nights would be a bit of a stretch I think.
Btw, from our observation, 90% of the hotel guests are non-Chinese; that probably explained for the 5* ratings and 3rd position.
