“EddieC from London - Excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

My son and I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Double Happiness Hotel. We had excellent services from all the member of the hotel staffs***** 5 stars and this hotel located in a hutong alley (it seems pretty safe), a beautiful old building with a traditional courtyard, It combines the best of old and new and couldn't have been more pleasing. The hotel is only a 8-10 minute walk to a Dongsi subway station (line 5) which makes getting around Beijing really easy and cheap (get a octopus/subway travel card before you start)
The breakfast buffet is excellent with options of some traditional Chinese as well as European style.
Beware of taxi, just take the subway, it is just as quick and cheaper.(from Hotel to airport cost lesser then 30 Yuan)
Stayed End of November 2012, travelled with my son.

Room Tip: We were upgraded to a family room by the hotel - Room 288 highly recommened

My husband and I, two 30-year old Americans, stayed at this hotel November 30-December 2, 2012 and we had such a great time. From the moment we starting walking down the Hutong street to the moment we picked up our luggage to head to the airport, we loved this hotel. The Hutong street is so cool and different and a great thing to see. The hotel entry and lobby are beyond charming and the service was great from the second we walked in the door. They were so accommodating and helpful and fun. The location is central and perfect for catching the subway to anywhere you want to go in the city. Oh, and the complimentary breakfast buffet is big and delicious!

We whole-heartedly recommend this hotel for your stay in Beijing.

Room Tip: If you want a big bed but there are none available, they wish push two twins together for you. It...

I've stayed in room 006, one of the hotel largest, upstairs from the cozy courtyard. I truly enjoyed my stay. This hotel is one of the very few in Beijing that offers a more "traditional" Chinese atmosphere in combination with top-rate services. If one looks for conventional comfort, then better to look for one of the main hotel chains. But for those wanting to experience Beijing in confort while being in a more genuine context, this is one of the best options. Double Happiness Courtyard Hotel is located in a small hutong (Beijing's traditional alleys) and reaching it by taxi can be a little complicated. Once arrived, one discovers that the closest metro station is just 8' away on foot. Hotel staff is efficient and speaks very good English. Breakfast was one of the best I've sampled in my numerous stays in the city. Internet is so-and-so, but that's more of a Beijing thing, not really a problem with the hotel per se.

Room Tip: Room 006 was extremely quiet and spacious.

We booked the Happy Family Room located on the 2nd floor of the property. It is a charming spacious room with a balcony attached, and very well equipped with everything. Location wise, although it is in an alley, it seemed really safe (in fact, Beijing seems pretty safe in general). It is a 10-15 mins walk to the nearest Dong Si subway station and the taxi ride to the airport cost around $20. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and we appreciate the traditional setting of the property very much. Definitely a great place to experience living in a hutong in Beijing!

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and had a great time. We were impressed with how attentive and helpful the staff was and there was always someone at the desk who spoke English. We got there around 10:30pm since we had a late flight and the taxi from the airport takes around 40 minutes (but cost less than $20). A very friendly woman was at the front desk waiting for us, after a quick checkin she showed us the room and insisted on taking our bags to our room for us. There was even a welcome bowl of fruits, juices and snacks waiting for us in the room. We were in room number 16 and it was spacious with two firm but comfortable beds that were a bit bigger than standard US twins. I'm 6'5" and fit comfortably on the bed. The bathroom was spacious with a very nice rainfall shower head. The TV even had a couple of channels in English. There is both a desktop computer and wi-fi in the rooms, but be prepared for super slow censored internet. We found it to be mostly unusable, even for looking up flight information. Make so to have your itinerary printed out since the internet in China is pretty unreliable.

In the morning we were happy to find an extensive breakfast buffet with both Chinese and Western options. Try the scrambled eggs with roasted tomato, it was delicious! One strange thing about the breakfast was they had cereal but no cold milk, only hot milk so we had to go to the front desk to ask for cold milk for the cereal (once we asked the brought it right out).

We booked a few of the tours through the hotel, the acrobat show was ok, nothing too special but fun and not very expensive. It was like a low rent version of Cirque du Soleil. If you go in the winter make sure to bring warm clothes since it didn't seem like they had the heat on in the theater. We also booked the tour to the Jinshanling Great Wall with them and it was an amazing trip. I'd highly recommend going to this part of the wall. It was about a 3 hour drive each way that left at 6:15 am and got back to the hotel around 6pm but it was well worth it. The hotel packed us a breakfast which was nice of them but it turned out to be an apple and the Chinese equivalent of Little Debbie cakes so unless you like cakes for breakfast you might want to plan ahead and pack something extra.

The bar in the hotel: Happy Bar has a nice atmosphere but is a little bit pricey for Beijing. Some of the other guests told us that the tea ceremony show they do at night there was a lot of fun but we didn't have time to check it out. If you do want a few drinks before going out for dinner definitely take advantage of the mini bar in your room! Beers were only 10 RNB ($1.50), and the wine, while not the best was just $5 for the bottle.

The location of the hotel was pretty good. It was located down one of the alleys in a Hutoung neighborhood. At first it seemed a little sketchy but I think it was actually really safe. It is less than a 10 minute walk to the Dongsi subway station and you can get to anywhere in Beijing on the subway for only 33 cents. You can't go wrong with that deal and it was much easier than finding a cab and sitting in traffic. We walked the first day to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square and though it took a bit more than an hour it was a good walk through the center of the city.

Only inconvenience we experienced was on the last night they made us switch rooms since they said they needed to do maintenance on the pipes in our room. They considered it an upgrade but it was a bit of a hassle having to pack everything up early in the morning before we had to leave to the Great Wall at 6:15.

Overall I would highly recommend this hotel if you are traveling to Beijing and we will certainly stay again if we go back.

As a seasoned traveler in China I could only recommend this first class charming hotel right in the middle of a picturesaue hutong in Beijing. Welcomed by super friendly and utmostly professional staff, the rooms are uniquely decorated with all the modern amenities. The room I stayed in was charming and lovely. The breakfast was very tasty and accomodqating both Eastern and Western tastes. When I needed to arrange some professional work on their copy machine and internet, It was performed immediately and with a smile.
Book in adavnce to make sure that rooms are available.

Double Happiness Courtyard Hotel is a top ranked hotel in Beijing for good reason.
It's a unique experience - a traditional "courtyard" hotel in a historic Hutong neighborhood - typified by long, very narrow alleys.

Service:
Second to none. Seriously - we've stayed in Ritz Carltons, Four Seasons, Hyatts, etc. This hotel offered some of the finest, most friendly, courteous staff we have ever witnessed. The front desk, breakfast, and bar staff share an infectious enthusiasm for their jobs and are genuinely interested in ensuring a top-notch experience. "Jacklyn" even came in on her day off during our last day to give us her personal camera SD card because mine broke and we didn't have enough time to seek one out before catching a flight. If that isn't 5-star service, I don't know what is. Other notable staff members included "Dede" and "Jimmy" the porter and handyman.

Rooms:
Rooms were literally spotless in every way: bed, linens, bathroom, furniture, floors, etc. We visited in November, so nights are crispy. Rooms were very warm - even the slate floors are heated. Comforter is very warm as well.
Other reviews noted hard beds - we did not experience this but it is a matter of preference.
We were upgraded to a wedding suite - with a charming traditional wedding bed, sitting area, and bathroom. This is a nice touch.
Two water bottles, a hot tea selection and a basket of fruit were provided every day.

Breakfast:
Breakfast was included with our room. We noticed a very nice selection of eastern, "american" and European items. Everything was fresh, tasted good, and we got off to a good start every day.

Bar food could be improved - our only complaint.

Some Tips:
It's a pain to get to and we admittedly got lost a few times.
- From the Airport: Pre-print a Google Map from Beijing Int'l to the hotel to help the taxi the first time.
Most taxis won't drive down the alley because they're narrow.
- This is okay and it's more of a pain in the neck for them to maneuver around rickshaws, cars, etc. Just let them drop you off at the main street and walk down.
The hotel provides a card with the address. Once drivers see this, you won't have a problem. Otherwise, the "neighborhood" is Dongcheng. The alley is "Dongsi Sitiao" and the hotel is # 37, which is hard to miss with the red lanterns and carpet.

We were very close to booking with the Park Plaza Wangfujing or another western hotel. This place is a great gem and we would definitely stay again on a repeat Beijing visit.
