“An oasis in the midst of chaos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2011

The Sofitel Wanda is a very nice hotel for a stay in Beijing. The room was very classy and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable with a pillow menu in case you want to order a specific type of pillow. The hotel is located near a metro rail line about five minutes walk from the front entrance. There are a number of restaurants in the vicinity. We were there for leisure and found most of the people staying there were on business. We did not eat at the hotel so can't comment about the food. The lobby is spacious and a great place to relax with several sitting areas and lounges for a nice evening drink.

Room Tip: Try to get a room higher up as the hotel is located on a very busy and noisy road. Try for a room o...

This hotel is one of if not the best hotel that I have experienced in all of Asia/China, I spend up to 90 days per year in Asia on business and of course become fairly picky about accommodation but this hotel never lets me down. The facilities are excellent the rooms are in top condition and the restaurants are very good. The buffet is of a very high standard.

We went on a classic China tour, and our agent booked us for 4 nights in this not-at-all-5-stars-hotel.
Lobby is nice but that,s all. As for our room, bathroom had often a very bad smell (bad draining I guess) .Business center has just 1 computer so you,ve to wait a lot if you don,t bring your own (not on holidays!), and there,s not a hotel shop. You don,t have the choice of a newspaper so you,ve to pay for the IHT or someother paper with international news.
Breakfast buffet has many choices, but they won,t allow you to enjoy them, as music is awfully loud and on the disco side... when we complained they told us this was standard in all Sofitel hotels, so I,ve already made my mind not to go to any of them.

We stayed at Sofitel Wanda in June for 5 nights as part of a large group. On entering the hotel, you immediately feel it is a 5 star hotel, it is decorated with French and Chinese art work, furniture and decorative ware and is absolutely beautifully. The rooms are very nice too, we were on a high floor so had a reasonable view of Beijing. The location is not the best as you need to get taxi's everywhere and the traffic is very congested especially at peak times. There is Walmart nearby if you need provisions. The hotel is let down by the staff who don't appear to have been properly trained. Most of the staff do not speak very good English, which is a major problem in Beijing and are very unproffesional. We attempted to order afternoon tea in the lobby one afternoon, but gave up. Firstly it was a long time before anyone came to us as they seem to be very short staffed, then when she did she didn't understand what we wanted, so we just ordered coffee as it was too difficult. They must be losing out on business as the lobby was very busy but we noticed other people also struggling. We went to the Chinese restaurant one evening, which was also a disaster. There were 4 of us and they escorted us to a private dining room, but we were left to wait for a long time. Once inside you are out of site and out of mind. The waitress came and took the order finally, it was a long wait for the food and when it came was very poor quality. You would think Chinese food would be a good choice especially as we were in China? The breakfast was quite good but they kept running out of food. I especially like the dim sum, but they only seem to make a small number at a time so kept running out. When I asked for it one day, they said it was finished, which is not acceptable. If we go to Beijing again I would probably stay somewhere else as there are lots of 5 star hotels now, which are better located.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views

Sofitel Wanda was probably one of the nicest hotels we stayed while in China as far as infrastructure goes, unfortunately they have to do something about the strong wax smell in the lobby area, it gave me a headache the whole time we stayed there. Service was not good either, the concierge and front desk had no idea of anything, they just did not know, they barely spoke English and were not capable of recommending any place in the city.

Great rooms. but that is about it.
service was poor.
food was awful.
lobby bar was always a mess and impossible to get service.
the only time we were acknowledged was paying the bill on check out.
with such a great product ... they really need to lift their game with service and food!
