We had the good fortune to find the Mao'er on the internet and the even greater pleasure of staying there - an auspicious beginning to the new year. Our room was the larger suite, Room A, which is stunningly furnished with exquisite reproduction dynasty furniture - and wireless internet. Our sincere thanks to Sally, who normally handles the internet reservation booking from abroad but was home for the holidays, as well as the imperturbable Angela and Amy, the on-site staff, who were consistently friendly, responsive and amazingly resourceful. They were helpful in innumerable ways with the quiet hospitality for which the Mao'Er is known. Much has been said about the delightful breakfasts, it's all true. Perhaps the Mao'er is a magnet for a certain type of traveler who wants to experience the essence of a city rather than the more insular aspects of a large hotel; we found the other guests to be great company and look forward to meeting them again - and of course we will be staying at the Mao'er any time we are in Beijing.
