We had the good fortune to find the Mao'er on the internet and the even greater pleasure of staying there - an auspicious beginning to the new year. Our room was the larger suite, Room A, which is stunningly furnished with exquisite reproduction dynasty furniture - and wireless internet. Our sincere thanks to Sally, who normally handles the internet reservation booking from abroad but was home for the holidays, as well as the imperturbable Angela and Amy, the on-site staff, who were consistently friendly, responsive and amazingly resourceful. They were helpful in innumerable ways with the quiet hospitality for which the Mao'Er is known. Much has been said about the delightful breakfasts, it's all true. Perhaps the Mao'er is a magnet for a certain type of traveler who wants to experience the essence of a city rather than the more insular aspects of a large hotel; we found the other guests to be great company and look forward to meeting them again - and of course we will be staying at the Mao'er any time we are in Beijing.

This is an exceptionally nice place in the heart of Beijing. This neatly restored traditional Courtyard House in the genuine Hutong quarters (now preserved!), is a highly recommendable place to stay. The few rooms are well equipped, quiet and clean, the atmosphere is cosy. And the service? It is brilliant! Managing house and guests, Angela and Amy, do a perfect job serving their guests for the most warm-hearted homefeeling. The breakfast is genuine Chinese cuisine at its best. You're even asked to tell them your all time favorite choice, you'll get it the next morning, thus meeting guests' individual needs in type of dish and quantity. The rooms are most comfortable, neat and kept clean. There's internet and TV. Close by are the most beautiful spots of Beijing such as Houhai Lake and Beihai Park. Its in walking distance even to the Northern Gate of the Fordbidden City and Jingshan Park etc. There is a broad variety of all kinds of restaurants, cafes, bistros bars in the Courtyard's neighborhood with a young people's touch. Mao'er Hutong is the place to be. - No question, I will come back to stay at this beautiful and comfortable place when in Beijing again.

Although initially hesitant to choose this place due to the small size of Rooms B&C, I am glad I did. The fact there are three rooms, communal dining and living rooms meant the guests were able to meet each other. Got some excellent local recommendations from others staying there for restaurants, sights etc. Stayed in Room B for five nights. Not all the girls spoke English, but we always managed to get our point across, and they were helpful in writing addresses etc in Chinese for taxi drivers.

Two minor complaints – the rooms were not cleaned regularly and the breakfast was of varying quality and quantity each day.

However, for the price, location and experience, it was fabulous. Head right and you hit Nanlougoxiang with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants, head left and you hit Hou Hai with shopping, more cafes and bars and plenty of transport options (except subway). The wireless internet was excellent, and they also had computers available for guests to use. Free local calls was another bonus, and the fact there were no additional costs was great. It felt like coming home at the end of the day!

  • Liked — Intimacy - only 3 rooms
  • Disliked — Distance to subway

My wife and I have just returned from a stay at this Hutong B&B and it was brilliant, We stayed in Room A which was huge and a real taste of Beijing life. Angela and Amy were really good and helpful and boy can they cook - Breakfasts in the morning were brilliant ! We were there in the middle of winter and were warm as toast in the rooms - plenty heaters and aircons for summer as well.

The Hutong is a little far from the subway but there is so much around the area and taxi's are plentiful so its not a problem. Its about a 3min walk from the main road and they were installing street lights down the Hutong road while we were there.

Fantastic place and we will definitely go back if in Beijing again, The rooms are non-smoking. Also try the restaurant on the corner of the main road and Maoer Hutong - brilliant food at a good price.

My friend and I stayed here for our first 4 nights in Beijing in November. It was wonderful and we wish we could have stayed longer. The location is ideal being within walking distance of the Bell and Drum Towers, Jinshang Park and the Forbidden City. Angela and Amy were wonderful hosts helping out with everything from suggesting restaurants to booking us tours of the city to getting us train tickets to Xi'an. They were very warm and helpful. This B&B is a place of tranquility after a busy day in the city. It felt like coming home each night. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Beijing.
