“Thank-you John Spooner & Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2010

My sister and teenage son and myself have just returned from a 6 day stay at Raffles Beijing where from the moment of arrival until we left, Raffles certainly lived up to its reputation of service, comfort and hospitality. We were greeted by John Spooner upon arrival, and over jasmine tea familiarized us with the hotel and the services that we could avail ourselves to.He arranged our cars and guide, our various tickets and drivers and airport tranfers when we decided to pop over to St Petersberg for a quick trip.(We couldn't wait to get back to Raffles after that experience.!!!!-)John certainly is the face of Raffles and with the friendly helpful staff made our stay a wonderful experience.Thank-you!!!!

We received first class service from start to finish with this hotel. I booked a transfer from airport to hotel and we received VIP treatment as soon as we stepped off the plane onto the concourse. The hotel had arranged for staff at the airport to escort us to pick up our luggage and out to our waiting 12 seater, then straight to the hotel where you are checked in with a glass of iced tea. The staff were very attentive and spoke very good english, because we have youngish children I had requested an interconnecting room which had already been set out for us. We were shown to our luxurious rooms which were directly in the middle of the building and overlooking East Chang An Avenue. Excellent varied choices for breakfast, nothing to fault at all, even for the fussiest child there is something which they will eat!

We had room service a couple of times, that was also excellent, the trolley was set out like a table (with tablecloth), cutlery, cruet set! My teenage son said it was the best beefburger he'd tasted, it was cooked medium (to perfection)!

We stayed firstly for 7 nights, then we flew to Xian for 3 nights and then back to the Beijing Raffles Hotel for another 3 nights, whereby they gave us the exact two rooms we occupied. We tried their seafood buffet which they do every Saturday, that had most types of seafood you could want and ask for - hot or cold, cooked or raw, it was fantastic! Definitely recommend it if you like seafood.

The Raffles Beijing is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Service is impeccable, perhaps the best we have ever had. The location is fantastic. It is difficult to find a single negative thing to say about this hotel.

Location: You can’t get more central than this, right next to the pedestrian Wangfujing street and a few blocks from Forbidden City/Tiananmen. The subway stop is in front of the hotel and extremely convenient.

Lobby, Atrium and Writer’s Bar: There are two lobby/atrium areas at Raffles Beijing. The traditional opulent first lobby, with beautiful chandeliers and period furniture, a constantly brewing samovar for tea service if you have any kind of wait, and an antique piano is what first greets you when you walk in. This lobby is relatively small but gorgeous. Attached to this lobby is the Writer’s Bar, where the décor is perfection and you can spend lovely evenings having drinks or tea. Service is absolutely the best anywhere in the world. From the main lobby a few steps transport you to a modern addition-equally beautiful. An atrium with a floating “ship” holding a bar/tea area in the center is surrounded by the walkway leading to elevators or East 33 (the restaurant you have breakfast in). The spa and gym are also in this section on another floor. Water flows from the top level down many stages to the pool at the center of the lobby. Large multi-colored lanterns hang down and are lit beautifully in the evening.

Rooms: Huge beautiful suites, with every amenity you can imagine, from plush robes and slippers, to umbrellas and every bathroom amenity you need. The beautiful wooden floors were gorgeous and the plush carpets had perfect colors – soothing and comfortable. The beds, maybe a bit hard for some were PERFECT for us. Wonderful linens and pillows were so comfortable. I fell in love with the bedside controls – temperature (in both C and F) and every light panel in the suite, dimmers, maid service, do-not-disturb notice – all under your control. Daily complimentary water bottles were also a nice touch. The shower water pressure was fantastic and the temperature any extreme you would wish, and easily controlled. Although I don’t care for the heavy on aromatherapy Raffles shampoo/soaps, I am sure most would love them.

Various Amenities and Services: We had free WiFi service and breakfast included in our rate. The WiFi was fast and always available. Breakfast service was also impeccable, and our wonderful host Ian took time to chat with guests daily. The only problem was that many breakfast foods which were to be served heated were a bit cold – the hotel needs to find a solution to keeping their wonderfully displayed food on heaters. You have so many different choices at breakfast, its hard to begrudge this minor point. Room service was rapid and dinner choices were varied and delicious. For a small fee you could upgrade to include daily tea in your rate – we did not do this but we did take tea one day and it was, as expected, very nice (but a bit pricey).

Housekeeping and turn-down service: This hotel room was the cleanest I have ever stayed in. You can’t find a spot of dust in even the most remote edge – and keeping in mind the size of the rooms, the amount of dark wood used, this was amazing. I was most amused by the way every single item we had, even down to our coins, was aligned daily on the desk or side tables with perfect symmetry. The wonderful bedtime stories from foreign visitors to old Peking were a welcome touch every evening. From the placement of the floor mats at the side of each bed with perfect alignment of slippers, to the folds on the hanging towels, the care taken with details of presentation during every day of the seven we spent at this hotel was magnificent.

Staff: What can I say about the staff at this hotel, except that they are truly amazing. From the first moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and the service never stopped. An initial tour of the hotel by a greeter after an incredibly efficient check in and transport of our bags was just a sign of what would be seven days of great service. The three concierge members we dealt with were the absolute best. Wonderful English, always greeting us with a smile and providing great suggestions and advice, always helpful and available – what more could we ask for? The desk was responsive to our every query and need and also helpful. There are many beautiful hotels in the world, but they don’t necessarily come with the service this one provides!

We will always remember Raffles and its staff fondly and hope to return to stay there again.

I have reserved 6 nights at the Raffles using 1800 Hotels. However when we arrived on tNew Year day, the hotel staff could not find our reservation. Instead the reservation was made to an adjacent hotel (Beijing Hotel - this is NOT a 5 star hotel, it's more like a 3 stars). Since it was the holidays in the States, I could not find anyone to talk to at 1800 Hotels. We had to stay in the run down Beijing Hotel for 4 nights then switch over to the Raffles for the last 2 nights! What a nightmare!!

For the entired time, the Raffles staffs were very helpful. They assited me with contacting 1800 Hotels in the US and UK for the first 4 days. They were very apologetic and sympathetic with our situation. They mentioned this had happened many times with 1800 Hotels and Agoda customers.

Once we finally checked in, we enjoyed Raffles' hospitality very much. Everyone at the hotels was very helpful. They were even playing and occupying with my 2 youngsters (age 3 and 5) while we took care of business with other hotel staffs. Next time when I return to Beijing, I will definately stay there. And I recommend this hotel to anyone who's traveling to Beijing.

PS. Hotel location is GREAT! Wangfujing subway station is right outside. Many many restaurants in the area!!

I stay in a LOT of hotels on business, and have no hesitation in saying that this is the very best i have stayed in. As other reviews testify it is really very difficult to find any kind of fault with any aspect of how this place is run. The rooms are wonderfully comfortable and well-appointed, the service is absolutely first rate and the whole ambience of the place oozes quiet sophistication. It is the ideal location next to Tiananmen Square and the main shopping district and gives good access to central Beijing more generally. Food is excellent - with an extraordinary choice at breakfast. Can't speak too highly of the hotel.

We booked this hotel through agoda.com only to find out when we arrived at the Raffles that our booking was not for the Raffles, but for the Beijing hotel which is in the same building complex. However, in contrast to the Raffles hotel which is a 5 star luxery hotel, the Beijing hotel is more like a youth hostel. We spoke to Agoda and at first they insisted that it was our fault and that we have to stay at the Beijing hotel, but aftre we made a big fuss, they canceled the room with no charges. However, this was an extremely disappointing experience that underminded our trust in online booking.
The staff at the Raffles was extremely helpful. They gave us free tea and let us sit in their amazing lobby until we had sorted things out with Agoda. The manager at the Raffles told us that this did not happen the first time. In fact, Agoda already had a bad name in the hotel. It seems as if this is some sort of scheme that Agoda uses.
From what we saw of the Raffles, it seems like an amazing hotel with excellent staff that treat you nicely.

After extensive research Raffles seemed like the nicest hotel around for it's amenities and it's cost and we weren't disappointed. We got to the hotel around 11:30pm and were checked in swiftly and shown to our room by a well spoken bell boy who gave us a tour of the hotel along the way. The staff and service through out our stay was impeccable and all very helpful and nice. We ordered quite a few meals from room service, which was always presented well and good quality. On Christmas Day they brought a complimentary dessert tray to our room. It's two blocks from the Forbidden City and Tian'namen Square, which is nice although the cabs don't really recognize the name or speak much english. There is a subway station right nextt to the hotel, which is convenient and very easy to use. The only down side to the hotel was the spa. For a hotel like Raffles we expected much more from the spa and were a bit disappointed. You walk into the spa reception area, but then to get to the actual spa you have to walk through a museum and go down the elevator to a dark floor. They did not offer everything on the spa menu and even after my boyfriend and I had made the appt their was some confusion downstairs and once in the room the masseuse brought out the menu and asked me what I wanted. She then gave me a shorter massage than what I asked for. My boyfriend had a more awkward experience with his masseuse who spent about 15 minutes, during his not so good massage, trying to get him to get a "special massage" which was a bit shady. Our room was the cheapest, the Executive Room, but very spacious and nice. The separate living room/study is nice and even though it's in a separate wing of the main building it's still close by and very accessible to everything.
