“Nice exclusive hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

We were welcomed on our arrival by Mr John Spooner, the Raffles Ambassador. We find this hotel to be quite exclusive, unlike other hotels with arriving tour group and can be noisy. We stayed at two Raffles business rooms and were happy with everything in the room. The hotel is conveniently located at the start of Wangfujing shopping district and a short walking distance to Tiananmen Square. It is easy to travel around Beijing using the subway, a station is located just a 2-min walk from the hotel. Overall, the staff are nice and accommodating except for one unpleasant afternoon when we were not served at the Writer's Bar and have to walk out. When we questioned the staff, one of the them simply said that they were 'busy'. If you are staying at Raffles and you encounter a problem, look out for John as he will be able to help you out.

We had high expectations and were excited when we booked, on arrival our room category was not available due to some issue with Beijing municipality water connection, after viewing 2 rooms we expressed our disappointment and within few minutes another room was arranged, due to the inconvinience i asked the breakfast to be included and the request was granted, staff mention litteraly that they managed to kick out some guests, well not impressed with their statement, felt sorry for the other guest.
No single amenities over the 4 day stay, at least a fruit basket considering the rate we paid.
The room is outdated, several cracks in the skirting and ceiling, curtains lenght too long and hooks broken, towels tearing apart, AC is central therefore not adjustable to your liking.
Breakfast selection very good, service very poor, shampoo and body lotion not replenished, minibar too.
Room was facing cooling station therefore noisy overall.
Disappointed and rather difficult to reccommand to other travellers!

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Raffles Beijing Hotel!

First, I would like to express my personal gratitude for the time you have taken to share your thoughts with us on TripAdvisor and on behalf of my entire team at Raffles Beijing Hotel I would like to express my sincere appreciation for you staying with us.

On the other hand, I was disappointed to learn about the challenges you experienced during your stay. We suffered a severe municipal hot water pipe burst just before you checked into the hotel and had to indeed relocate some of our valued guests. This incident was beyond our control however, the way this fact has been communicated with you is certainly unacceptable and I have discussed this matter with all my Department Heads as well as our Training Manager. We will initiate a re-training program on guest interaction to help preventing similar incidents from happening.

We have also noted your remarks regarding the condition of the room you were moved to. In the meantime this room has been taken “out-of-order” and underwent a maintenance program.

Thank you very much once again for your report. Only by candid comments such as yours are we able to constantly improve our services and facilities.

We hope that these incidents will not prevent you from staying with Raffles Beijing Hotel in the future.

Warm regards,

Matthias Al-Amiry

this is a very elegant hotel designed in a grand old fashion with lots of class.
restaurants, service, amenities are top notch.
the rooms are all suites (i think?) divided into two sections with plush furniture, wood floors, and a feeling of being in a grand European hotel.
the biggest downside to the hotel is that, being an older hotel, they have ONLY A/c or ONLY heat. when i was there in March it was heat only and my room was uncomfortably hot. the staff was gracious, gave me a fan, etc but the oppressive heat and 'dead air' made for a bit of uncomfortable sleeping but other than that this place is top notch. when you check in the room make sure the window opens in your room in case it gets too hot (if you are there in the winter).

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay with us at Raffles Beijing Hotel. We appreciate and value the time you have taken to share your experience with us on TripAdvisor.

We would like to thank you for having chosen Raffles Beijing Hotel as your preferred accommodation in Beijing and we are delighted to read that you enjoyed your overall experience.

However, we are disappointed to learn about the challenges you experienced with the air conditioning in your room. As I mentioned in several responses on this site, the heating is centralized and controlled by the Chinese government. Unfortunately, the government decides when to switch from heating to cooling and wise worthier. The only option we have is providing our guests with mobile heating or cooling units.

In addition I would like to thank you very much for pointing out the two parts of the hotel. We understand that some of our guests prefer our colonial style rooms in our heritage building others, mainly business travelers like the contemporary rooms in the auxiliary wing better. The rooms in the adjacent, modern building are all regular rooms but as you correctly mentioned set up as Junior Suites with a separate living room.

Jeff, again thank you very much for your feedback which will help us to continuously improve our service and facilities.

Warm wishes,

Matthias Al-Amiry

We were welcomed at the lobby with a nice lady and did our check-in while drinking a beautiful Singaporean drink sitting on the couch. What a treat for someone just arrived at the busy capital. When we got to the room, we were totally overwhelmed by the glamorous decoration and spacious room. Our standard room could easily be a suite in any other hotel. And my favourite part is the balcony facing Chang’an Road and Tian’an men square. It couldn’t be any more close to the city’s heart! Not to mention the famous shopping street downstairs. Definitely one of the best hotel in Beijing. Will come back again.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Raffles and it's close proximity to Tiananmen Square. The room was enormous and well appointed, with free WiFi and the food was well presented and enjoyable. The staff were very obliging and polite, especially John, the Raffles Ambassador. He helped us with sightseeing information and directions in using the train system and his hints on dealing with traders at the Silk Markets were very beneficial. We recommend Raffles to our fellow travellers!

Raffles is an older but very eloquent hotel. Rooms are vey spacious and well finished. This hotel is only 2 blocks from the Forbidden City and Tiannamen Square. Traffic is a little difficult but was not a major concern.

Room Tip: The 5th floor provides a great view.

Staff are well equipped with knowledge whenever being posed a question. Friendly and provided useful advice. The only grouch that I have is the service when they help with getting a taxi. Most of the times they will get you to have a seat at the lobby while they secure a taxi. For my case, I explained that I am in a rush and would need a taxi urgently. However they were inflexible and stuck to flagging down a cab for another guest who is supposed to be at the lobby. The guest was nowhere to be found and yet the staff never once offered for me to go first. I was vexed and disappointed with such service from a top notch hotel. I think the management should relook at this.
Apart from this unhappy incident, I am pleased with the room but would prefer if it were not at the new wing because it is slightly smaller than the previous room I stayed in, a year before. Breakfast is also too expensive and I'm not impressed with the selections. Expected better standard and tastier food.
Location wise, it is also easily accessible by train at the Wang Fu Jin stop, and near the Forbidden City and other attractions.
