“Excellent Hotel in all ways.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

The position of the Raffles Hotel, especially for a first timer to Beijing is very good. The room was a good size and very comfortable. The service was excellent all staff were friendly and helpful. Access to shopping areas, site seeing and transport was easy from this hotel. If we go back to Beijing we will stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Business side, there was a partial view and was quiet.

I spent alot of time researching hotels in Beijing as knowing I was n a long haul Air China flight it was important not just for me, but for my 10 year old son to feel rested and happy for the overnight stay. It's also so cold at this time of year that time walking around outside is limited so a good hotel is paramount. As expected Air China was, at best, dismal. The drive from the airport was bleak, so when we arrived at Raffles in all it's glory, and were welcomed in to a wonderful experience.
Of course, everything looks more friendly at Christmas (again important if you have children) but apart from the enormous pine tree adorned with lights and decs in the lobby, the chandeliers and elegance of the reception area was a delight for sure eyes.
Happy from the get go it just got better when John (aka lobby lizard) introduced himself and made us feel at home straight away. I was concerned that we didn't have an Australian/Beijing adapter for our laptops etc 'well why don't I send one up to your room?' was the instant genuine reply..and sure enough there it was in the room minutes later. John is an absolute gem and you feel immediately at home knowing he has your back - on top of which he is full of great stories and information. Incredibly accommodating.
It wa important to have a pool at our hotel and had read reports that it was too cold in the water. Happy to say, this was not the case, it was perfect for swimming at 25/26 degrees and a spa if you did get chilly.
The room was everything and more, I have read reports of noise but had none to complain of and we were right on the main road at the front of the hotel. That said I did have a landmark room on the 5th floor which may have helped with any road noise. I also thought the temp of the room was perfect,, warm about to sit in and cool enough to be able to sleep. Very comfy beds.
Can't say enough about what a great hotel Raffles is, and will recommend it to everyone...particularly those with taste.

Room Tip: Depends on your taste but I would say landmark, the old part of the hotel is gorgeous if you like th...

Dear Mrs. Speers,

Season’s greetings from Raffles Beijing!

First and foremost I would like to express my personal gratitude for your report and the time you have taken to share your thoughts with us.

Second, on behalf of my entire team at Raffles Beijing Hotel, I would like to sincerely thank you and your son for staying with us. At Raffles our mission is to completely delight and satisfy our guests, make them feel home away from home and create an “oasis for the well travelled”. We are committed to delight our guests every day; continually getting better to keep us the best.

Therefore, it is a great pleasure and extremely rewarding to receive positive and encouraging remarks about our services and facilities such as yours. We are delighted to learn that we exceeded your expectations, that you enjoyed your time with us.

We will certainly share your letter with our Raffles Ambassador John Spooner, his team and all our colleagues and we are convinced that accolades and sentiments such as yours will encourage them to further improve their services.

We have noted your remarks regarding street noise and room temperature and appreciate your comments. Noise and temperature sensitivity are experienced very differently by all of us and we are delighted to learn that you were not disturbed by street noise nor did you feel the room temperature was unpleasant.

Regarding the water temperature in the pool I would like to add that last month we have implemented temperature readings three times per day in order to being able to ask the pool operator to adjust the temperature whenever needed.

Mrs. Speers, once again thank you for your report and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you back to Raffles Beijing Hotel. Please feel free to reach out to John or me directly in case you need assistance with your booking.

Warm regards,

Matthias Al-Amiry

I wish someone has warned me before choosing this hotel, I just fell in the trap of Raffles clever marketing , but run away after one night.
to begin with, its old hotel and you feel like in history museum surrounded by old photos of Chairman MAo hosting his state guests there, back in the old party days.

Until today the rooms have same old structure . No one invested to renovate this hotel properly and no one invested in new air conditioning system. this means that there is still old central heating. you can not adjust your room temprature and you can not close the heating that can brings the room temprature to even more the 26-28 degreed. At least it feels like that.on top of it it is very noisy all night.
This is in addition to the noise from the traffic in the main high street of Beijing which the hotel is located on. How come they did not put acoustic glass on the windows. only Raffle management know the answers...
The other side, the so call quite side, had another big minus, you have the central heating and airconditioning system there with all night noise.

The closet is in the narrow bathroom, the shower tab is tiny and hardly can hold one person, there is no hand shower only rain shower. The electricity plugs are the old british plugs so you will need convertors. we asked for two convertors to charge our phones and we had to wait about 20 minutes , at after 1 Am when the hotel was empty...
The towels quality look like from MAo time as well, over used and maybe good for dust and shoes cleaning. In Rumenia we had better towels already 20 years ago...
On top of that they over charge us for the room, another important point, you can never find taxi, they offer to bring you private car which charges minimum 100 RMB even for very short trip that normaly cost 10. and on top of that you still have to wait for such car. the overall service was not what you can expect.
The breakfast was very good, I must say as you can expect from Beijing 5 star standard. But the rooms are the biggest problem. the staff is cold not so helpful. I would defenately prefer to stay at the friendly and luxury Grand Hyatt which is near by.

Room Tip: if yo have to stay there, ask to see the room before yo accept it. we saw 7 rooms and where all defe...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your recent stay with us in Beijing. We trust you enjoyed a successful trip and a safe journey back to Romania.

Our mission is to completely delight and satisfy our guests. We are committed to making a difference every day; continually getting better to keep us the best. Unfortunately, we seem to have failed you. We very much welcome your report since only by candid comments are we able to identify opportunities to continue to improve on our products and services.

In several responses to TripAdvisor reports I have mentioned that Raffles Beijing is able to offer two different experiences based on the two buildings the hotel comprises of. Our heritage building comprises of 94 colonial style rooms and suites which compliment the design and historical feel of the Lobby and Writer’s Bar. Some might call it a rich man’s mansion and enjoy the feel tremendously others might not like the history and heritage our property has to offer and showcases but prefer staying at larger modern big-chain hotels.

The 77 rooms as well as our all-day-dining restaurant East 33 located in the auxiliary building are contemporary designed. These rooms at the back of Chang An Avenue all feature a separate bed room, set-up similar to a Junior Suite and are 46 sqm large. Hence, it really depends on the personal preference and taste of our guests which room type they prefer.

The heating and air-conditioning in Beijing is controlled by the Government and unfortunately beyond our control. This should not bee an excuse but just an apology for the inconvenience caused. We have also noted your positive comment regarding our breakfast and we are delighted to share your remark with our service staff and our culinary team.

Again, thank you very much for your candid report.

Kind regards,

Matthias Al-Amiry

At the end of a 2-week trip to China, we needed to make a 3-night reservation for a Beijing hotel. When Raffles appeared in the web site search offering, we decided to give it a try. I recognized the name and knew it would be a remember-able experience. Raffles is truly a classic hotel. We were greeted with tea and our rooms were exceptional. This is an historic hotel with gracious service and excellent restaurants. They even recognized my birthday (shown in my passport) with cake in our room for the three of us. The concierge gave excellent advice when we needed some medical supplies.

I stayed at Raffles during November 2012 when all the Chinese dignitaries were staying next door and Beijing was in virtual lock down up to Tienanmen Square.

I was greeted upon arrival by John the General Manager, a fellow Aussie and Sydneysider. He was lovely and we chatted over tea about where to visit and what has changed since 2006.

The room was very large and beautifully re-furnished and the staff were lovely and greeted me by name.

Its a short walk to Tienanmen square and major tourist areas.

Definitely recommend.

First class experience. Even the cheapest room here is worth every yuan. Nearby high end shopping areas at tourist sites. Be sure not to miss the writer's bar. Also, the congee breakfast room service is recommended. Had trouble fetching a taxi from the hotel - be sure to reserve one in advance.

Nice and convenient location not far from a few attractions including Tienanmen square and Forbidden City.. The hotel seems to be connected with other buildings and you can pleasurably stroll, shop or window shop. One of us was familiar from years ago with Raffles Singapore and constantly stressed that the Beijing one one was even classier. Older building but beautifully maintained. Service great. The bar area allows for relaxation.
