I actually really liked this zoo. I was expecting to be appalled based on a lot fo the reviews I read, but it really isn't as bad as they say!! The animals all appear healthy and with normal behavior. I've been to zoos where the animals pace back and forth, have visible bald spots and flies buzzing around them, etc. The Beijing zoo animals didn't exhibit any of that behavior and looked to be in healthy shape. Sure, the enclosures are not as big and sprawling as they are in some countries, but they are not as small and dingy/dirty as I've seen in like, Mexico or even Pittsburgh, PA.
They have a lot of interesting, exotic animals that you dont' find in zoos in the U.S. I think because China has bartering leverage with their pandas, they get really great animals in exchange. Kangaroos were really cool! I've never seen them in any other zoo. They had a bunch of other interesting Australian animals I've never seen before such as this giant freaky bird called Causarrus (?), and giant anteaters!!! Of course, the treasure of the zoo are the pandas!!! They were all separated, but apparently they are all solitary animals. They are soooo cute!!! They don't even look real....just very fascinating to watch. Another animal at this zoo that you will not see anywhere else in the world (other than in China) is the snub-nosed golden monkey. They had a pair on display...I have always wanted to see these animals in person! Beautiful!!!!!
The white tigers and the lions were also really great to see.As well as the red pandas. We didn't even have time to go to the aquarium!! Next time I'll go back to see the pandas and golden monkeys and then to the aquarium!!
