We echo Chuck B's comments and recommend Beijing Hikers full-heartedly and without reservation. We chose Beijing Hikers over other providers because its website provided detailed description of the planned hike so we could confidently match up our fitness/skills to the rigors of the hike--a feature that probably allows other individuals to self-select appropriate hikes. We were impressed with pre-tour emails that informed us of suggested snacks to pack and clothes to wear, directions to our meeting place, etc. Our tour was graded 3+ out of 5 and was a group of two guides and nine hikers, expats currently living in Beijing as well as tourists from around the world, ranging in age (twenties to sixties) with mix of trekkers and casual day packers. While on the bus, our guide, Mill, prepared us for the day by detailing the hike on a map and passing out bananas (for muscles!), snacks, and three bottles of water (with more available as needed). It was also great to have Betsy, the naturalist, along who could answer so many questions about flora and fauna (a good excuse for pausing after walking up a particularly challenging hill). Both kept up a pace without making any of us feel held back or pressured to speed up. Our lunch was at a rural farm house where our bonded group gratefully wolfed down delicious locally-sourced dishes, some made with ingredients (chestnuts, squashes, purslane) that we had passed along the hike. All in all, this hike was the highlight of our 15-day stay in China.
