“Beijing Hikers Longquanyu Great Wall to the Little West Lake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

We echo Chuck B's comments and recommend Beijing Hikers full-heartedly and without reservation. We chose Beijing Hikers over other providers because its website provided detailed description of the planned hike so we could confidently match up our fitness/skills to the rigors of the hike--a feature that probably allows other individuals to self-select appropriate hikes. We were impressed with pre-tour emails that informed us of suggested snacks to pack and clothes to wear, directions to our meeting place, etc. Our tour was graded 3+ out of 5 and was a group of two guides and nine hikers, expats currently living in Beijing as well as tourists from around the world, ranging in age (twenties to sixties) with mix of trekkers and casual day packers. While on the bus, our guide, Mill, prepared us for the day by detailing the hike on a map and passing out bananas (for muscles!), snacks, and three bottles of water (with more available as needed). It was also great to have Betsy, the naturalist, along who could answer so many questions about flora and fauna (a good excuse for pausing after walking up a particularly challenging hill). Both kept up a pace without making any of us feel held back or pressured to speed up. Our lunch was at a rural farm house where our bonded group gratefully wolfed down delicious locally-sourced dishes, some made with ingredients (chestnuts, squashes, purslane) that we had passed along the hike. All in all, this hike was the highlight of our 15-day stay in China.

“Beijing Hikers Great Wall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

My family recently had the opportunity to visit China and were looking for a way to visit the Great Wall that did not involve being with a lot other tourist. We also wanted to see both restored and unrestored areas of the wall and engage our teenage son who loved hiking but was not super excited about visiting China.

We hit it perfectly when we found Beijing Hikers. Beijing Hikers offers many tours, group and private of the great wall. Thomas in their office patiently emailed me several times to help us customize our trip.

Our hike on the great wall was the highlight of our two weeks in China! The scenery cannot be described and the feeling you have from being on a structure is something my family will always treasure. Overall it was exactly what we wanted. We wanted to see the wall by ourselves and not be crowded in and bothered by loads of other tourists.

Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, helpful and we really enjoyed her company. In the 3 or so hours we hiked, the only people who we saw on the wall added to the enjoyment of the hike. One was a man teaching English to a small group of teens in one of the towers. We loved pausing to listen to him reading and teaching the students. There was also an older man selling trinkets but he was not too pushy and a trio of Europeans.

If I had to do the trip over again, I would want to have a 2 day hike and stay at the school house in between. Even though we were tired at the end of the day, we loved the experience so much we could have gone again the next day.

Beijing hikers exceeded our expectations and I can't recommend them highly enough.

“Beijing Hikers - Great Team For Getting You Away From The Concrete Jungle of Beijing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

If you live in or are visiting Beijing and want to get a feel for life outside of this concrete jungle, check out Beijing Hikers at www.beijinghikers.com .

Huijie & Hayden and their team host several hiking trips each week to the mountains that surround Beijing. Their treks are off the beaten path and go through forests, parks and small villages. Hikes vary in difficulty levels. Each one is rated 1-5 based on distance, challenge and duration, so there is something for everyone.

This is a great way to escape the city, if you live here and also a wonderful way to get a feel for "real China". Many of the hikes end with a delicious lunch hosted by local farmers. The local people you will meet are very warm hearted, hard working people. You also get the added benefit of meeting hikers from all around the world. Any given hike will have at least 5 or 6 different nationalities present.

I have hiked with Beijing Hikers several years now and am always pleased with the hikes and the staff is wonderful and knowledgeable. Safety is a primary focus.

They also offer long-distance trips to various places around China.

Costs vary depending on distance traveled by bus, plus whether or not lunch is offered on any given hike. Their website provides all the details for each hike or trip.

Highly recommended!

Hi petebirch - good advice on the clothing for winter, it does get cold up on the Great Wall. We're very happy to offer season-specific advice on suitable clothing and gear for a hike in Beijing, any time!

best,
Hayden
