“Not bad at all”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

We spent 2 nights in Plaza in late December 2012 during our China tour. The hotel was booked with our travel agency as a part of tthis tour. The impression from our stay there was good enough. The check-in was quick. Our room was ready for us (despite of we arrived long before check-in time). The hotel required deposit (in cash, 100 USD for 2 nights stay). Our room was on 14th floor (overlooking the 3rd ring road) and was of good size, clean and comfortable. There were no problems. The beds are a little bit hard (as everywhere in China). Breakfast was good, mainly Chinese with good choice. Coffee was awfull (as almost everywhere in China). There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby. Connection and speed was Ok. Hotel is located on 3rd ring road (not far from Temple of Heaven) quite far from the city center (40-60 min by taxi depending on traffic; 40-50 RMB per trip) and this could be main disadvantage (taking into account that it's quite difficult to hail free taxi during rush hours and awfull traffic jams in Beijing). However, when new metro station (only few meters from hotel entrance) will be opened (opening was schedulled for the last days of Dec'2012), this problem will be eliminated.

I spent 2 nights at the Plaza Hotel in January (during winter). The hotel reception/check-in was quick and easy. The breakfast buffet was quite good and the staff were friendly. The rooms are a good size and clean, although the bed was hard and the bathroom dated.

The main problem was the heating. I literally couldn’t sleep for both nights, due to the temperature. The others in our group had the same problem. Even with the windows open it didn’t help. 0 degrees (Celsius) outside, and about 30+ degrees inside. Just doesn’t make sense.

The hotel is rated 4 stars, but I would suggest a more accurate rating would be 3 stars, at best.

SUMMARY:
What I liked - Breakfast, FREE internet in the room and free Wi-Fi in the lobby
What I didn’t like - Sleep quality

We came there at night so there was a girl at the reception who didn't speak a word in English. I was quite difficult to get the information we wanted and we had to guess everything ourselves.
The room was clean but there was a smell which I didn't like at all. I think the problem was in the carpets.
It was not bad at all but it's too expensive! I will never come back there again for sure.

I stayed there for 3 nights, the breakfast is terrible, it’s all veggies and they even ran out of eggs!! besides, it does not open till 7AM, and there were guests smoke in the non-smoking floor…. The Gym hours are too short… if you are going to the hotel like i did everytime, it took at least 20 minutes to make the turn under the 3rd ring road....

It is a tour groups hotel, not for individual travelers.

I stayed at this hotel for a few nights and found it very pleasant, the room was very comfortable and spotless, I even had my own chinese dressing gown and the view was interesting with the ten lanes of traffic and young lads stopping buses with red flags.

The breakfast was a mixture of eastern and western and was nice, the loby area contains a bar which was relaxing to sit in at the end of the day and is not expensive for a four star hotel. The staff were pleasant and the whole hotel was spotless really.

Regarding the location, the hotel is situated on one of the ring roads that circle Beijing, which is such a massive City, if you are on a tour this will not affect you, the nearest underground is a very long walk away but taxis are cheap and can take you to all the sites like the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Tianamen Square etc.

If you leave the hotel on foot and walk past the KFC parallel to the road for about fifteen minutes you will come to an area the contains a pocket of Beijings fast disappearing hutongs (which are like little houses in very narrow lanes) where not so long ago the whole of the city was populated with these dwellings, only here there is no guided tours for westerners.

I also came across an interesting market in the same area which was pretty big and there were all kinds of things on sale, again with the area around the hotel being so far out, this was purely for the locals and I got some currious looks here but not unpleasant. With the pace of change in Beijing I doubt that this kind of place will exist in this city for much longer.

I forgot to add that opposite the hotel on the other side of the ring road there is a nice restaurant, I can't remember the name but it is up a flight of stairs, you will have to walk to the crossing to get to it.
