“Nice hotel for China”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

Hotel Peninsula was nice, but it was not a true 5 star hotel in the US. It was one of the nicest hotels in Beijing, but it was Beijing. Great Value for the money!

First, the hotel is dated and needed to refresh. Other than that, the hotel was nice. It will not wow you, but I received good service and special attention from the hotel management and concierge when I needed it.

The Peninsula is a good location near the Wafujing Street of Shopping. I got the wrong directions and went the opposite direction of the Forbidden City. Although I did not feel like I was in danger, the city and that area drops off pretty quickly. So be clear where you are going before you walk around.

Beware of local Chinese being extremely friendly and want to grab a coffee/beer with you to learn their engrish. It is a scam to get you spend money at a bar/restaurant. Also, many locals claim to be artists and sell you their art for high prices. Be careful.

If you know where you want to go, have the hotel concierge write the directions in Mandarin and hand that to the cab driver. Also, keep the hotels card with you so you can instruct the driver where to take you back.

Good hotel, good service, but not the Peninsula in Hong Kong or Los Angeles.

The Pen's location is excellent. As is to be expected from a 5-star hotel, you will find attentive service, English speaking staff (very helpful) and superb rooms/facilities. We made good use of the indoor pool as a family of 7 travellers. Loved the breakfast in bed option (great spread with delicious eggs benny) though I can't say the lunches/dinners at the restaurants matched up (but still decent). Solid option in BJ, no room for disappointment, although a bit soul-less and run of the mill.

I normally prefer to stay at small, boutique hotels for an imitate environment and personalised service. However, I booked at the Peninsula for a work trip and wound up staying an extra day over the weekend to see some of the sites. I was very happy I did, and while next time I might try a courtyard hotel I would be very happy to stay here again.

The location is very good. Beijing is quite large and spread out, so no matter where you stay you are going to have to do some travelling around the city to see the sites. The Peninsula is well connected, with a good supply of cabs and a subway stop a two minute walk away. It is also just down the street from a food street and a shopping street, so there are plenty of local amenities right out side the door.

The rooms themselves are what you'd expect of the Peninsula. While they are not spanking new, they are absolutely 5 star standard. A very comfortable bed, crisp sheets, a lovely bathroom, etc.

Breakfast was truly excellent, and among the best hotel buffets I have ever had (if not the best). Truly amazing orange juice, an amazing spread of Chinese and Western food, and great fresh fruit. The staff were attentive and coffees, etc were quickly refilled.

The only issue is the cost. I got a corporate rate which made it expensive but not ridiculous. Personally I would not pay the rack rates I see posted online.

Very good and nice htel very good located to visit Tianamen Square and The Forbbiden City (15 min. walking, aprox.). Amazing arcade.
Spa services and snack too expensive. Hamburguer around 40€, it doesn't use to be like this in China 5 stars hotels.

I have stayed in this hotel over a decade ago when Beijing still lacked good 5-star hotels. I stayed in Pen for 3 nights over the weekend becasue the travel agent offered me very good rate as compared to Raffles and Grand Hyatt.
The hotel is very central and accessibiliy. 5 min walk from the Line 1 subway station.
Hotel and rooms look the same as compared to when I stayed over 10 years ago.
Room is small by modern standard and that of Pen Standard. No separate shower and bath. Oldish looking vanity counter and sink.
Service at the Jing during breakfast is far below normal Pen standard. There is hardly any staff to attend to the need of the huge crowd as the restaruant is relatively large. It usually takes them 5-10 min to refill your cup of tea or coffee. Attitude of staff is friendly but it's just not enough staff to serve during breakfast. Again, food choice is so-so and not really up to Pen standard.
For the price/ rate my agent offered, I am contended. But if you are really expecting Pen standard in this hotel, you shall be disappointed.

Medium walking distance from Forbidden City and Tianamen Square and the shopping/food street Wangfujing this was a great hotel. Super luxury of course. Great service. Excellent variety of western+chinese breakfast. They also set up our tour to the Great Wall with a tour guide and driver (we paid for the lower priced group tour but ended up being the only two people signed up for the tour so we got a private tour!). Wasn't the cheapest tour but the guide was English speaking and well informed and we were happy overall. Also there is an indoor pool.

Reached hotel bang at breakfast timings. had a great variety of breakfast we tried breakfast at thier restaurant jing which had buffet breakfast they served a wide array of Chinese and Western-style breakfast. The location was excellent and close to some of the the major attractions. Public transport is available cause this hotel is on the main road. The front desk is very helpful and they guided us well through our stay at Beijing. work-out facilities are good, but crowded in mornings.
The lobby is nice. The ATM is within the hotel complex and other banks are nearby.
