Hotel Peninsula was nice, but it was not a true 5 star hotel in the US. It was one of the nicest hotels in Beijing, but it was Beijing. Great Value for the money!
First, the hotel is dated and needed to refresh. Other than that, the hotel was nice. It will not wow you, but I received good service and special attention from the hotel management and concierge when I needed it.
The Peninsula is a good location near the Wafujing Street of Shopping. I got the wrong directions and went the opposite direction of the Forbidden City. Although I did not feel like I was in danger, the city and that area drops off pretty quickly. So be clear where you are going before you walk around.
Beware of local Chinese being extremely friendly and want to grab a coffee/beer with you to learn their engrish. It is a scam to get you spend money at a bar/restaurant. Also, many locals claim to be artists and sell you their art for high prices. Be careful.
If you know where you want to go, have the hotel concierge write the directions in Mandarin and hand that to the cab driver. Also, keep the hotels card with you so you can instruct the driver where to take you back.
Good hotel, good service, but not the Peninsula in Hong Kong or Los Angeles.
