“Very Happy With Our Stay At Capital Hotel Beijing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2011

We reserved the Capital Hotel for a 3-night post-cruise stay in Nov '11 and chose it the way we choose other hotels, which is based on a combination of price and guest reviews that are mostly positive. So we and others arriving at the same time were all pleasantly surprised and impressed to see what a beautiful hotel the Capital turned out to be. Our initial impression lasted throughout our stay, and we are giving the Capital Hotel 5 stars in all categories.

The exterior is very attractive and the lobby is huge, sophisticated and and much more elegant than the reasonable prices led us to expect. The staff were all helpful, professional and friendly. We were in Tower B in room 850, and our room was surprisingly big, very well appointed and comfortable with a big wall to wall window. The only negative was a hard bed, but we slept fine and we knew to expect a hard bed from other reviews, and this seems to be a common factor in hotels in China.

We also really enjoyed the location of the hotel. We are a fit couple in early & mid 60's who enjoy walking, and we walked to the Tiananmen Square & Forbidden City areas easily, as well as to some of the shopping areas. We even walked past the Temple of Heaven to the Pearl Market from the hotel (a longer walk), but we took a taxi to return to the hotel.

Note: Not related to the Capital Hotel, but watch out for the pedi-cabs. We experienced one trying to charge us 10 times as much as he had quoted. We held our ground and paid what had been agreed initially and he left, but it might have been worrisome if we had not been in front of our hotel. We had been warned by a Beijing resident we met on our cruise not to trust the pedi-cabs unless someone arranged it for us, and we should have listened. This is why I am adding this note, which has nothing to do with the lovely Capital Hotel. That was the only negative incident in an otherwise great visit to Beijing.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Overall I was very satisfied for what I paid.

Reception: I made two bookings under my name which made checking in very difficult. They were confused as to why I would have two bookings and only had me down for one as they assumed it was a mistake. I made two bookings because we were four people (2 in each room). With some patience, they were still able to provide what I reserved and at the rate at which it was reserved (only by keeping my printed out reservation form).

Consierge: Helped us to reserve train tickets, hail cabs to our tourist destinations and they arranged for a driver to see the great wall. I was very pleased with the consierge service.

Room: A little dated, but great view of the city. Very spacious. Nothing to complain about.

Location: Great location close to forbidden city. We took the metro from the airport and walked from the metro station to the hotel.

Facilities: I think the bowling was not working while we were there, but who needs to bowl when you have historical sites to visit. Lobby is beautiful and grand. There are also many stores and restaurants.

Room Tip: There's a little convenience store across the street where you can get cheap beers and snacks.

Stayed 6 nights in a Club Room for about £82 (GBP) through Expedia, rack rate > double this.
Check in / Check out at the Club lounge was relaxed and easy and the electronic room key always worked first time.
Location - as others have said about a 20 minute stroll to Tiananmen Square and similar to the nearest metro stations. Nearest main shopping centre (WangFuJing) about 30 mins walk-too near for taxis to want to take you back to the hotel on meter-after a long day we really could have done without that last 30 mins.walk.
Getting a taxi from the hotel was usually ok, the doormen will go out to the road to try to get one if none are waiting, but we did have one one occasion ( 6.15 on a Tuesday evening) when it took them 35 minutes! The couple in line ahead of us were going to a show and would have only just made it.
Taxis though are very cheap when used on meter ,even the airport about an hour away depending on traffic is usually under £10 (GBP)
Room (1905)- good view towrds Tiananmen Square and start of Forbidden City-nicely illuminated at night
As others have said , the bed was very hard, the aircon kept to one temperature irrespective of what we set it to and we did not sleep very well..
The shower was efficient, nice amenities and separate bath, but the shower took an increasingly long time to empty.
Club rooms have free WIRED internet, works well enough for e-mails but i suspect downloading attatchments could take a long time and obviously Chinese censorship means no Facebook or blogger etc.
Club Lounge- compared to other Club Lounges the included breakfast is the poorest I have seen.
Choice of 3 cereals only, the muesli disappeared after two days to be replaced by Coco Pops. Some fruit and plain yoghurt. Salad vegetables and an assortment of not as fresh as they might have been bakery items with butter jam and honey, no cold meat/fish. Hot selection was fairly samey and just adequate, nothing exciting, they will cook eggs to order.
In the evening the ClubLounge offers high tea ( a few warm and cold snacks-again nothing special) and cocktails. You are allowed one per person per day included with your room. We were never offered one ,we had to request every time
We had no other meals in the hotel so I cannot comment on those.
Had a beer in the bar at just over 30 RMB = £3 GBP, in local restaurants can be as low as 4 RMB = £0.40 GBP
Staff generally obliging but you have to ask for service , it never seemed to be offered
Nice lobby and Atrium, lifts ( elevators) were efficient, no long wait at all.
The hotel seemed fairly quiet generally
Overall , decent enough for the price, better than most of the tour hotels we had on our last visit to China, Club room still worth it for the free internet and views, if not the food and drink

Room Tip: Club rooms for the view and free internet

I would only stay here if booked with a tour. Our stay during Oct. 2011 lived up to the low expectations that other travelers have written about, i.e. worn rooms, hard beds and non-responsive staff. If you pay, stay away.

A pleasant stay at this hotel, and fairly central in between 2 train stations. Approx 20-30 mins strolling to Tianamen Square. The hotel itself was clean but had an old fashioned feel to it and the reception staff though quite efficient could have smiled a bit more.
We did not use swimming pool but it seemed ok and there were beauty/massage facilities etc.

I would advise that if you need a taxi, that you get the hotel to get one for you.
When we were there (September 2011) if you tried to flag a taxi in the street many would not stop and if they did they refused to put the meter on, and not want to go on short journeys as for them it was not cost effective. I think that many taxi drivers have been affected by the increase in petrol prices.

The room was quite big and the beds fine as all beds are pretty hard in China. Lovely crisp white sheets and rooms cleaned every day to a high standard. We had the usual toiletries, shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush and paste, shower cap and soap etc. They had a hair dryer on the wall in the bathroom fine for short hair but long hair would take ages to dry!

If you fancy a glass of wine take care a bottle is about £28 and we opened a small bottle which had gone stale! We didn't have to pay for it though and they changed it promptly.

If you don't want to be bothered going for breakfast we ordered one breakfast between two which was quite enough for both to start the day. Ideal if you have teenagers who take ages getting ready and don't want to get out of bed!!

Overall this hotel was fine but lacking in a bit of atmosphere, but ideal if you want somewhere quite central that is clean and comfortable.

We had already learned that the star ratings in China are higher than western standards, so having arrived at the hotel, it was pretty much what we expected- 3/4 star standard, rather than 5 star as advertised.

Check in was straight forward which was great after a long flight and no sleep for 26hrs!

The hotel foyer was very pleasant although we did wonder if we were expected to order a drink if we wanted to sit there which was a shame.

Our club room was a good size and the bathroom ok, however the bed was rock hard! We have travelled to other hotels in China, and this was the hardest! I would say that the carpets could do with a deap clean as there were a number of stains.

We were also supposed to be on a non-smoking floor, however on the second night of our stay, we could smell cigarette smoke as we entered the floor and our room. This didn't go away all evening was wasn't pleasant but had cleared by the morning and was fine for the rest of or stay.

The plus side, it the close location to The Forbidden City. Easy walking distance and also to the night markets. The subway is also reasonably close.

The staff were generally friendly throughout and no real problems with English. One thing that would have been helpful would have been for them to find us a taxi when we left to catch our train to Xi'an as we had to stand out the front of the hotel to hail a taxi which took some time until we found one that wasn't going to rip us off ( too much!) for the short trip.

All in all though, you get what you pay for and for £70 a night in a central city location, it was a good deal.

I spent much time looking on the internet for a well located reasonable hotel in Beijing and was satisfied I had found the ideal hotel in the Capital. Whilst I cannot be too harsh in my review, I can say I would not choose to return for a number of reasons.

My first negative impression occurred upon check in. We had booked at an excellent rate through an internet travel provider, unfortunately quoted in US dollars. The rate was inclusive or all taxes and charges and was to be paid upon check out. The price became distorted in the hotel's favour with their application of an extremely unreasonable exchange rate in Chinese Yuan. Not the same rate I might add that was used when purchasing Yuan in the lobby! The end result was we paid substantially more than was expected. I suspect they do this frequently when one books through a provider and not direct.

Our next disappointment was the Club Room facilities and refreshments, included in our rate. One drink only was included and the food was certainly limited in both portions and variety. Having stayed in other Club Rooms in various hotels Capital really must lift its standards.
Our friends needed to print documents for travel purposes and were charges the equivalent of two dollars (US) per sheet.
Lastly, the bed was indeed hard, almost like concrete. A five day stay became very difficult and hard on the skeletal joints. Another negative was we could not use the shower for several days because the drain was blocked and it caused flooding. However, once we notified the hotel it was remedied quickly. Having paid for an executive room with supposedly upgraded facilities and services this should not happen.

On a positive note the breakfast was excellent, with plenty of variety and attentive service from the staff. Our room was cleaned well each day and our request were attended to in good time.
