“Beijing Private Tour with U China”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

I have used the internet extensively to research private tour companies for our vacations in the past, and most recently, for my family (including 2 kids, ages 12 and 16) for a 3 day visit to Beijing this past June. I wanted something "out of the box" because as you might imagine, teen attention spans can almost be nonexistent if you do the normal historical buildings and museums. I posed the request to Leo at U China, as well as to 2 other tour companies. Immediately, he came up with a 2-3km gruelling walk at that part of the Great Wall where nobody goes to, a private tai chi lesson, calligraphy, kung fu show and a presentation by the fighting cricket guy, as well as the normal Forbidden City & Summer Palace & acrobatic show. Our guide Tommy was very humourous and engaging and accompanied us every step; we wanted to stay longer at some shops at a hutong, Tommy was was very patient. We wanted to visit a store that sold something exclusively, so Tommy and driver found the store on the internet and made a special trip for us and waited to take us back to the hotel. They went above and beyond what we expected. The restaurants that they had arranged and prepaid for us were top notched; we got to order what we wanted. We stayed at The Opposite House, which was atypical and a great surprise, since it adjoined a shopping and entertainment area. We had a great time. My experience is that U China is not on the top of the internet search engines and it took some patience to finally come across it, but it was quite worth the effort, and we strongly recommend Leo, Tommy, and crew!

“U China Travel - Best trip ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

We travelled to China for 3 weeks in May and used U China Travel for 11 days across 4 locations. We were originally planning a combination of large and small group touring but I'm so happy we decided to do at least some of our touring privately with Leo and U China as it made our trip that much more special and unforgettable. The extra cost to have a private tour guide and driver is definitely worth the money. Leo's attention to detail, commitment to customer service and willingness to plan a trip to suit your needs are second to none. We would have no hesitation in recommending U China Travel to anybody who wants to experience the real China with some once in a lifetime experiences thrown in.

We first contacted U China Travel along with a number of other companies offering private travel arrangements in China. Leo was the only one that got back to us within 48 hours and was very prompt in putting together an initial itinerary for us to consider. He was also very accommodating with changes and flexible in changing shows, attractions etc. right throughout the process. He really does have a great business ethic and goes the extra mile to make sure his customers are happy. Leo also makes the effort to meet as many of his customers as possible in person and actually guided us for a day while we were in Beijing and gave us a lovely wall hanging as a gift. He's a great guy, really friendly and knowledgeable and I have no doubt his business will go from strength to strength in the future - keep up the great work Leo!

Guides and drivers:
Our guides and drivers were absolutely excellent. Our guides were Linda in Beijing, Cheryl in X'ian, Sharon in Guillin/Yangshuo and Kevin in Chengdu.
I can't speak highly enough of the extra effort they put in to make sure we were looked after. Some examples are: buying us a local pomegranate drink on a hot day walking and cycling and buying us some dates as a farewell gift because we mentioned we liked them; having cold water and bananas ready for us when we arrived on our flight, knowing we may not have had a chance to eat and that it would be a long drive to our hotel; making sure their phone was on 24/7 in case we needed help with anything at night; making a special trip to our hotel to pick up a photo we had forgotten and posting it us at our next destination; and actually borrowing some money so we could get our picture taken with a baby panda because our overseas credit card wouldn't work!! They also make sure to go into the airport with you and stay with you until you go through security, which makes a big difference when checking in etc. especially if, like us, your bags might be a little over the weight limit and the airline staff need some persuasion!
You can really tell that Leo's guides love their job and I can't recommend them highly enough. They have a vast amount of knowledge about not only their local area but the culture and history of their country, and this makes a huge difference in how much you learn and enjoy the trip. Also, the drivers are awesome and anybody who has been on the roads in China will know what I mean!

Hotels and restaurants:
Only 2 of our hotels were organised by Leo, the Radisson in X'ian and the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. Both were very beautiful in very different ways. The Radisson is very modern, with dark colours, minimalist design and muted lighting. We found it very relaxing and it's in a lovely modern area of town near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. There's a great shopping street with lovely gardens and statues on one side, and directly across the road a huge shopping centre. The Yangshuo Mountain Retreat is an eco-friendly country style retreat right on the banks of the Yulong River. The views of the river and mountains are breathtaking and we absolutely loved having dinner outside on the riverbank. The room was rustic but comfortable and it was a beautiful spot to spend some time.
The restaurant meals included in our itinerary were also first class. We particularly enjoyed the restaurants in Beijing - Dali Yunnan Courtyard, a really great dumpling restaurant and another traditional Chinese restaurant frequented by locals (which I can't recall the name of) - although all of the restaurants in all 4 locations were fabulous. Another particular favourite was the hot pot restaurant in Chengdu which was more like a cooking class than just a meal!
The difference between the food we got on the group sections of our tour and the food we got with Leo's guides really made the difference to our trip. The authentic Chinese flavours and ingredients we experienced at Leo's restaurants were so much better than we expected and this made the food definitely one of the highlights. So much so that since getting home we've been experimenting with cooking our own Chinese and eating with chopsticks!

We have done a fair bit of travelling around the world and we generally have so many places and things we want to see and do that we don't plan on going back anywhere twice. But we must say our trip to China was so much better than we imagined - the people are very friendly and there is so much history, culture and food to explore that we are planning on returning. Leo and U China Travel have been one of the main drivers in us wanting to return and I can guarantee that we will definitely use U China Travel for our whole itinerary next time. Thanks Leo for making our trip to China our best ever.

“The Best Business and Tour Guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

We looked to book a guide as we had not been to Beijing and wanted to maximize our time on the ground. U China seemed comprehensive in catering for our specific needs and the fee was reasonable. Leo offered recommendations and we took his guidance on location and hotel, The Opposite House. We booked a 6 day guided tour and I can honestly say it made the visit. Leo's knowledge is impressive but his comprehension of firstly our requirements but most significantly our humour was striking. It was like having a third friend along - we truly enjoyed his company.
The car and driver were of a good standard and nothing was too much trouble. We even rearranged one of our days and had another trip sorted overnight. Cannot rate this highly enough. Very professional, attentative, and thorough but most of all good company.

Well done Leo, here's to your ongoing success.

“Leo + Beijing = AWESOME”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

My family thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day/4night tour in Beijing and it was all because of Leo and U China Travel! My family includes 4 children and everything from the airport transfers to the trip out to the Great Wall was well thought out, well planned and executed with professionalism! Leo was very prompt and responsible in replying to my emails even when I was making last minute changes to our itinerary. I especially appreciated Leo dropping by our hotel before we left town to introduce himself to my husband and I - actions speak louder than words! Thanks for everything Leo and U China Travel - our memories of Beijing will last a lifetime!

Hi Kim

Thanks for your review! It is pretty that we didn't meet this time and wish there are chances to plan your family's China Trip to other cities in the future. I wish you also liked your local guide Ocean and the restaurants that I arranged for you!

Please stay in touch and look forward to doing more for you in the future.

“Great tour of China!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

We arranged our nine-day tour with Leo and U China Travel on the recommendation of our daughter who had used them a few times. We had never taken a tour of any kind, and weren't sure what to expect...whether it would be too much or too little, would we see what we wanted, etc. I should never have worried! Leo knew exactly what to arrange, how much time to spend there, what to skip, where to eat, and how to get there. He answered every (and there were many!) email promptly and was extremely accomodating. We had no special needs, we just wanted to see the most we could, and so we were totally at his mercy. It was a great experience.

The guides and drivers met us at the airport and also went with us through checkin when we left. Although we are experienced travelers, having them navigate for us was great. All three of our guides were wonderful...they were very personable, their English was good, their knowledge incredible, and best of all (for me!) they knew where to find all the "Western" toilets! I also can't say enough about the drivers we had...and although we have driven all over Europe on our own, there is NO WAY we'd ever try it in China. There were a couple of times that I was holding on, but they really knew how to get from one place to another the best way...and without crashing.

Beijing: We were met at the airport by Lili, our guide and our driver, "Master". We visited Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and Nan Luo Gu Xiang Hutong on the first day. Fascinating. We stood in line for an hour and a half to see Chairman Mao in his mausoleum...I don't think I'd recommend it because it was a long wait for a 5 second walk by. This was our decision, and our guide tried to tell us that it might not be worthwhile. Lunch at the Dali Unnan Courtyard restaurant was a real treat. You wander down this alley and wonder what you're getting into...and then this lovely courtyard and wonderful food. The Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven were interesting, we declined the walk to the top of Coal Hill Park, and the Olympic Stadium walk by was ok, but the air pollution made it hard to see anything much. The Great Wall trip was great...we took the chair lift up and the toboggan down...different, but fun. You've seen so many pictures of it, but it is different when you're actually there. The Crowne Plaza Hotel was fine...restaurants were good as was the location. The last night we walked a couple of blocks to Sijiminfu Roast Duck restaurant which was recommended by our guide, Lili. My husband loved the duck which was prepared tableside and I liked whatever it was I ordered off the menu. A good spot to get away from the hotel.

Xi'an: We were met by Cheryl, our guide, and Mr. Pan, our driver. We went first to the Han Yangling Mausoleum which was sort of a build up to the Terracotta Warriors but very interesting on its own. We saw the Great Mosque and the City Wall, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and of course the Terracotta Warriors...a real highlight and amazing. We stayed at the Westin Xi'an which was very new and quite "zen-like" and in a very good location. The only problem with the hotel is that they have no idea how to pour a decent-sized glass of wine. We had to really "nudge" them into giving us a decent pour...for $11 a glass.

Shanghai: Kiko, our guide, and Mr. Chem, our driver were again, excellent. We visited the Bund, the Yuyuan Garden and the Jewish District and French Concession. It's a great city! Our evening entertainment of the ERA Acrobatics Show was a huge surprise...we've seen several Cirque du Soleil shows and really didn't know what to expect...it was different but great! The ending was incredible. A must see. We did not go to the top of the World Financial Center because it was very cloudy and we couldn't have seen anything...didn't really miss that. The Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town and boat ride was a good side trip...loved the market. The Radisson Blu New World was a beautiful hotel...great location and amenities. Our final dinner at the M on the Bund was really special...the roof deck was lovely, and we could see the Shanghai skyline...even in the rain.

Our trip was memorable, and Leo and his group were exceptional. Thanks, Leo!
