I have used the internet extensively to research private tour companies for our vacations in the past, and most recently, for my family (including 2 kids, ages 12 and 16) for a 3 day visit to Beijing this past June. I wanted something "out of the box" because as you might imagine, teen attention spans can almost be nonexistent if you do the normal historical buildings and museums. I posed the request to Leo at U China, as well as to 2 other tour companies. Immediately, he came up with a 2-3km gruelling walk at that part of the Great Wall where nobody goes to, a private tai chi lesson, calligraphy, kung fu show and a presentation by the fighting cricket guy, as well as the normal Forbidden City & Summer Palace & acrobatic show. Our guide Tommy was very humourous and engaging and accompanied us every step; we wanted to stay longer at some shops at a hutong, Tommy was was very patient. We wanted to visit a store that sold something exclusively, so Tommy and driver found the store on the internet and made a special trip for us and waited to take us back to the hotel. They went above and beyond what we expected. The restaurants that they had arranged and prepaid for us were top notched; we got to order what we wanted. We stayed at The Opposite House, which was atypical and a great surprise, since it adjoined a shopping and entertainment area. We had a great time. My experience is that U China is not on the top of the internet search engines and it took some patience to finally come across it, but it was quite worth the effort, and we strongly recommend Leo, Tommy, and crew!
