“Unexciting but decent and good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

I booked at very short notice after being let down at another hotel. Booked it based on price and location and was expecting something a bit rubbish to be honest. Was pleasantly surprised - not an exciting or stylish hotel, certainly - but it was a decent room, clean, good bathroom, lots of hot water, comfortable bed. It's in a good area but down a lane and pretty hard to find on the first attempt. Service was helpful and friendly. There was no atmosphere or cute details that would make it a memorable hotel, but I think for the money it was great value. I've paid twice the price to shiver with cold in a supposedly charming hutong hotel before, I was happier with this one :) Don't choose it if you are looking for something to make your trip to Beijing perfect and extra special. Do choose if you just need a base but don't want to be staying in some dodgy dingy hovel.

I liked this hotel in Beijing a lot. The room was very comfortable with a good soft mattress. The bathroom was modern, everything functioned well. Very good breakfast, both western and Chinese. Good pastries including croissants, sweet rolls, every butter.

They had wifi in the lobby. The only thing that didn't work was that their ATM machine did not function and the desk was unable to change money. They also didn't speak English very well.

Room Tip: they all seemed good, we stayed at the beginning and end of the trip and liked both rooms.

WE spent three nights here on our Oct. 2012 visit to Beijing. It is located in a Hutong and easy access to subway, taxi or the forbidden city.

Great breakfast and the staff were very knowledgable about the area and things to do.

We had a one bedroom King room which is worth the upgrade!

Breakfast was huge with Chinese, Western and European options.

Room Tip: ASk for a King suite, worth the upgrade.

Nice hotel for 2-3 days. The only worst part is no wifi in rooms as it should be a standard practice. Staff is very nice and kudos to restaurant manager Wolfgang who took special care during our dinner arrangement. I would definitely recommend.

We were very surprised when we were dropped off at this hotel; it is located in a real hutong section of the city. We liked this location as we could see the locals and where they ate, shopped, and yes, used the local washroom. At night we wandered around the streets and saw interesting food being barbequed. Found the local elementary school etc.
Hotel: beautiful decor (maybe a bit garish for some peoples' tastes) The bathroom was modern, spacious, and the bedroom area was very large, bigger than some American places we have stayed in.
Breakfast: American and Chinese so no worries about food
Water: 2 bottles of bottled water supplied in the bathroom for brushing teeth, etc.
Mini fridge: use and you pay for whatever is taken
For the price, unbelievable value.
Downside: there could be more staff who are able to speak some English. Found very few front desk people fluent in English; they tended to look to the one person who was more capable.

Room Tip: We had a room at the end of the hallway. We overlooked the street but it was no problem with noise.

I brought a group of 25 or so people to this hotel twice in September.

The hotel is very new, and has high quality public areas and bedrooms. My bedroom had a large bathroom with a window into the bedroom area - there were venetian blinds for privacy but they were broken and wouldn't close. Ooops.

One of our group scored an upgrade to a suite, which was spacious and huge.

Service in the bar area was terribly slow - it seems they can handle an occasional person coming in to the bar and asking for a drink, but if 10 or more people arrive together, things fall over and fail.

The location is an interesting one, and some people will love it while others will hate it. The hotel is located on/in a traditional hutong (the word actually means 'narrow lane') and is one block from major streets at either end of the lane. Many group members reported that taxis had problems finding the hotel, and if you are taking a taxi there, you are better advised to get the taxi to drop you on the corner and walk the 100 yds down to the hotel (Note that Google maps has the location wrong - it shows the corner of the hutong, but you have to go to the left from the point on the map along the lane to where the hotel actually is).

There are lots of great restaurants around the area, with amazingly low 'local' prices rather than ridiculously inflated tourist prices. If you turn left out of the hotel and walk along the hutong, a noodle restaurant on the right, most of the way to the main road, was very popular with group members, and when you get to the main road, turn left and the Korean BBQ restaurant was also a big success.

Being in the hutong may not be a positive experience for everyone, but it makes a great and positive difference compared to being in a generic hotel in a generic 'western/modern' part of Beijing. Two thumbs up for that.

Now for the problem. And, much as I liked the hotel, its staff, and its location, I'll never go back there. The problem? Bad internet access. It is totally unacceptable that a modern new hotel doesn't provide functional internet access. Much of the time my internet connection would time out completely, and even when it was working, speeds were appallingly slow. I was unable to do the online work I desperately needed to do due to the bad internet, and many others in our group reported similar problems.

So, if you don't travel with any sort of internet-needing electronics, you'll be fine, and the hotel would be a good choice. But if you want to access the internet, you need to choose a different hotel.

My 2 adult daughters & I stayed here for 4 nights in July and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Frankly, I have never been disappointed with BW outside the US (all over Asia, Prague, Istanbul, etc.) Our rooms/bathrooms were modern, lovely, spacious and very clean. The beds were the the most comfortable I've ever enjoyed in Asia. Due to tips by other TA reviews, we requested rooms overlooking the nearby hutong and really enjoyed the views. The staff was extremely helpful, the guys in the hobby lounge were a delight. We booked 2 days of tours through the hotel and were delighted to have a private car for the same price as the big buses--so, we had a guide & driver all to ourselves! Breakfast was very good with lots of choices for all tastes--one thing though: the coffee urn tended to run out early and did not get refilled in time for us to get a 2nd cup. Tip: get 3 little cups right off to equal a US mug :) Another tip: do NOT fall for the minivan scam from the airport to the hotel. Get a real taxi (for a fraction of the price) and have the hotel info ready so they can call as the hotel is not well known yet and bit back from the main street. The front desk will order up a taxi for your any time. That said, the location was great.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the neighborhood hutong
