“Awesome Dumplings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

This place has not only some of the best dumplings in Beijing but some of the best I've had in China and I've eaten my fair share of dumplings! Service was prompt, attentive and friendly.

“Fave place for dumplings in BJ -- good location for drinks after”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013 via mobile

We dine here regularly, and you also can take away. Very good dumplings -- huge variety. The non-dumpling food also generally is good. Not terribly atmospheric -- storefront, two stories, bright lights, big wood tables, but certainly pleasant and with good service.

Approachable for foreigners / non-Mandarin speakers. The staff may not speak English but it's easy to get the English menu and just point away if need be.

Favorites: pork and cabbage dumplings; beef and green chili pepper dumplings; lamb and leek; broccoli stir fried w garlic; etc.

Not an expensive night out -- we typically pay under 50RMB pp and often less.

In busy Andingmen area, easy walk from subway. Check out Amilal or El Nido for beer/drink after.

“REAL Beijing and great dumplings.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Are you someone who wants to find the "real" Beijing. Then skip Din Tai Feng and Dadong and all the usual suspects and come here to Xian'r. Xian'r means "the stuffing inside dumplings". It's pronounced See-YAHR, with a downward, emphatic tone. Round this part of town, it is well known as one of the oldest, classic dumpling places. You will need to queue at peak times.

Dumplings here are very, very good. Skip the other stuff on the menu. They have an English one tucked away somewhere. Beer is cheap and cold. Service is brusque in real Beiing style but friendly too. They have often come and grabbed me to translate for "foreign friends" so they try hard. The atmosphere is loud and that's a good thing.

This is the real Beijing - it doesn't get too much more real than this.

I would go more often if it wasn't smoky but they will try to find you a seat where people aren't smoking, and it's worth putting up with it at least once (and it's not like a bar, it's just that older Chinese guys tend to smoke a bit).

“Dumpling Goodness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

I read about this place in a New York Times travel article on Beijing and new that I had to track it down once I got there. No disappointment.

A couple of things to know up front: the staff knows very little to no English, but don't let that stop you. Just ask for an English menu - no trouble there. They have other dishes, but these are supposed to be some of the best dumplings in the city, so I highly suggest them. One order yields 5 dumplings, our server conveyed to us, so you might want to go for two orders. We ordered two orders each of beef and carrot, pork and tea leaves, and pork and lotus. The pork was our favourite and the lotus provided a nice crunchy texture. The tea leaves were very potent so, while not bad, it wasn't our favourite.

The three of us walked away with a bill of about $18 USD for a total of 30 dumplings and 3 large Tsingtao beers.

Take the leap and get out of your comfort zone a little. You'll be glad that you did.
