“Highly recommended hot pot experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

This is an excellent dining experience in an easy to find location (8th floor of Intime Lottery mall, cnr Wangfujing St)
I was looking for a spicy, authentic hot pot experience and this restaurant exceeded all my expectations.
Hot pot menu options were diverse and just the right level of challenging vs safe for what I was after (I don't eat red meat).
You can order / watch other diners have their noodles being hand-pulled table side. Impressive to watch!

I would definitely recommend Haidilao to other lovers of spicy food with a hankering for hot pot. Excellent value for money!

Great for a medium to large group, unless you're travelling solo and are hungry!

I would note - if it says it's spicy on the menu be prepared for spicy! (And I've got a pretty high tolerance for spicy food!)

Staff were very helpful and spoke a good level of English.

“Good fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

Directions: this restaurant is on the 8F of the Intimate Lotte building. This is the department store (currently with scaffolding) beyond the apple store and next to the church in the Wangfujing district. Best way to reach it is via the lifts.

Chinese hotpot is a bit like a meat/fish fondue. You choose one or two broths (we had one mild and one spicy) and then choose your meat/fish etc to put in it. I strongly recommend the hand pulled pasta - both for the spectacle (watch them make it before our eyes) and the taste.

The food itself is fine. As it is simply raw ingredients in a broth, it is not going to overwhelm your taste buds...that is not the point of this place. It is a fun, pleasurable experience. Trying new flavours and sauces, rescuing your meat fro the broth and enjoying yourself.

The service was exceptional. We did not really know what we were doing and they patiently guided us through it, despite having limited english. We did go in the middle of the afternoon when it ws empty, so can not comment what it would be like when busy.

Highly recommended.

“Great price/quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

When we arrived we had 86 customers ahead of us. However, we got a waiting table and a deck of cards. In the end, we only had to wait for 15 minutes before we were seated. Little in the way of speaking English but the menu has pictures. We went for a mixed pot with mushroom broth (delicious) and spicy broth (don't let the reference to fish heads put you off). Staff were very helpful in curing our hotpot ignorance. Noodle show was fun to watch. The check puts a smile on your face - maybe not cheap for Chinese standards, but I can't eat well for this price at home very good value for money.

“Really fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

We loved this restaurant. The snacks while you wait are great and as non-chinese speakers.....they treated us kindly. We found many places just dismissed us b/c they knew we didn't know Chinese and they did not want to bother with us. Not this place. They tried so hard and were very friendly. We really enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere here is fantastic! The kids loved the noodle making guy who was tossing the dough and spinning it around kung fu style! Give this place a try, prepare to wait, but, enjoy the snacks while you are waiting. It's worth it!

“Hot pot standby -- good for first-timers and repeat visits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

We dine at this branch of Haidilao frequently. Easy location for us, and the food and service always is good.

Always packed but not in an obnoxious way -- there are things to keep you busy while you wait -- beer, nuts and snacks, manicures (yea, really).

The best part about Haidilao is you get to mix your own dipping sauce from a counter of about 20 ingredients. I tend to stick with a fairly classic sesame paste or oil with tons of black vinegar, scallion, coriander and a bit of garlic and chili. The counter also has cut fruit -- the pears are lovely to cleanse the palate -- and some fun pickled veg and other accompaniments.

Ingredients are always quality -- Mongolian lamb, beef, various mushrooms (must get black fungus), tofu (must get freeze fried tofu), cabbage, pea shoots, lotus root, potatoes, etc. we always do the split broth -- half clean mushroom, half spicy. Their spicy broth is actually spicy -- a nice mix of chili and Sichuan peppercorns.

Service is friendly. Approachable for foreigners/non-Mandarin speakers. Our first time there, we weren't terribly sure on what to do and the staff seemed to find it fun to teach us.

Try the hand pulled noodles too -- they pull them table side.
