“A Bargain (and More) in Beijing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

I travel to BJ from the USA four times a year on business. A friend recently recommended this hotel, and I'm glad he did. It's a bargain; well located and comfortable. The highlights for me:

● A great rate -- lower than most comparable hotels in Beijing.
● Centrally located. I had meetings all over the city.
● The subway Line 2 is a 12-15 minute walk; or taxis are available from the hotel.
● Clean room and comfortable bed. The room is not large, but modern and well maintained.
● Free wifi in the room. A big plus when I'm traveling alone and on business.
● A 10 minute walk to Sulitan Village for restaurants, shops, bars and Starbucks.
● There's no on-site restaurant for dinner, but options nearby.
● Breakfast is good. Asian and Western options. The b'fast room can get crowded, but hey, just sit where there's space. Everyone is friendly (or just waking up).

I had no complaints. I'll definitely go back to this hotel on my next visit.

Room Tip: I was on the 17th Floor -- above some of the inevitable street noise in a big city.

We recently spent 5 nights at this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The rooms are rather small but nicely furnished and the view was great. It was also very quiet and spotlessly clean. After three nights they even changed the linen.
Breakfast was great, with many Western and Asian choices. We also reccommend the traditional teahouse on the ground floor which was a lovely experience.
Overall, this was a great stay in a great location and we would be happy to go back to this hotel next time.

The counter staff are very attentive and provide necessary help. Relaxing atmosphere in he hotel and feel free as at home. The taxi fare is cheap and there is no need to take subway if the attractive area is near

Room Tip: Garden view room

I spent alot of time trying to select a hotel in Beijing. I was struggling finding a hotel of this quality for under $100 a night. Many of the hotels in this price range had very mixed reviews and often sounded tired and poorly maintained. I finally decided on Holiday Inn Dongzhimen after reading alot of positive reviews on TA and other hotel sites.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn for 8 nights, and I was very happy with my choice. The building & rooms were clean and in good condition by western standards. I haven’t stayed at a Holiday Inn for many many years, but was pleasantly surprised by a pretty modern design and decor I didn’t expect from the chain.

The staff spoke english well and were helpful. There was also an ATM on site, self-service laundry room, in room safe (was not listed on Holiday Inn website.) The room rate included a free breakfast which was pretty basic, but decent enough. The hotel lacked some amenities such as a pool, gym or room service, but nothing I really missed.

The neighborhood isn’t bad, but is not in central Beijing for sight-seeing. There is several restaurants and a couple grocery stores nearby. Right acrossed the street was an very good and affordable restaurant Jingzun Peking Duck that I ended up eating at several times. There is also a large bar district (I don’t recall the name) for nightlife that is a quick cab ride south of the hotel.

The main downside of the hotel is the distance to a subway stop, which is a 15-20 minute walk. Normally it wouldn’t be too bad, but after walking all day sight-seeing, the extra distance can start to take it's toll. However the nearest subway stop (Dongzhimen) is a convenient one to be near. Dongzhimen is one of two stops on the airport express train into town making arriving and departing easy. Dongzhimen station is also next to a large bus terminal. I was able to catch a bus to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall from there quite easily. Obviously cabs are always an option and are pretty cheap in Beijing, but often traffic is pretty brutal a took 30 minutes to an hour a couple times to get back to the hotel from the City center. So I mostly relied on the subway for getting around the city.

All and all, the hotel seemed to be a great value, and of the quality I was looking for.

I just needed to stay in this hotel between 2 flights (arrival in the evening and departure the next day in the afternoon).
Check in goes quickly, the room was ok also the bathroom.
The only complain was the breakfast room: too small for so much people and impossible to find an empty table. Staff in breakfast room try to do their best, but sometimes some items are completely empty (by example orange juice) and it took ages before someone refuild this.
Service is sometimes rude (in the breakfast room): what do you think about taking your empty dishes when you are drinking your cup of coffee?
It's a good hotel, but the breakfast room was a complete disaster.

My husband and I stayed 10 nights at this hotel.

Before arriving, I wrote to the hotel to get the name of the hotel and adress in chinese, so I could show it to the taxi driver. However they never responded. Luckily someone else could help me.

We were very happy that we were able to check in early, 10 am. They even offered us free softdrinks or coffee in the restaurant while waiting. The rooms are small but very nice and clean. They have a nice flat screen tv (with english speaking channels) Ipod Dock, free bottled water etc.

We also had some problems with the smell, like some other reviews mentioned. In the bathroom it sometimes smelled of chlorine, and the smell could be rather strong. We also had days with small flies in the bathroom, probably coming from the drain.
When we turned on the aircondition another strong smell sometimes appeared. Not cigarette smoke, like other wrote about, but more like a smell of paint or some chemical. Maybe they used it to clean the airconditon. However we tried to tell explain it in the reception, but they did not understand us. Luckily you can open the window in the room, and that helped a bit.

We had a room on the 16th floor facing the street. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the back. A lot of serious honking from the cars all the time. Luckily I brought along my earplugs.

The Sanlitun area is close by 10-15 minutes walking. The Metro is 15 minutes walking away.

The breakfast is okay, we just wish that they would have another kind of bread than just the white toast everyday.Maybe some whole grain toast? Lots of asian food..... fried rice, noodles, dimsum etc. Some mornings it was hard to get a table, so be prepared to be seated with someone else, if you do not want to wait.

The staff speaks very little english. The staff in the restaurant and the maids are extremely friendly and doing a great job.

The receptionists are a bit harder to talk with and not that friendly. I bought some tokens for their washer/dryer ( 1 token costs 20 CNY) and paid cash. The receptionist still asked for my room number, and I did not really think about why. When we checked out they had written it on our bill. I do not know if the receptionist just had kept the money himself or what happened. However since 50 procent of the profit on the tokens goes to charity, I did not like to have a discussion and just paid the bill. However a bit annoying.

We ate twice in the restaurant at the hotel. If you eat on a weekday you get free softdrinks with the meal. Nice food and friendly staff in the restaurant.

Try the Peking Duck restaurant across the street, nice and cheap duck. We also tried Dadong, close to the Metro Station. Amazing restaurant and great duck, a little more expensive though.

If we ever come to Beijing again, we will try another hotel.

Small but more than sufficient room with a great location if you know the city (lots of walkable places nearby, subway also about 10-15 mins walk away) -- if you don't know it though, getting a taxi is pretty tough. Computer stations in the lobby are great (though half of the computers had trouble connecting to the internet most of the time), as is the hotel-wide free wifi.
Be warned that rooms don't have irons/ironing boards and minibars (the mini fridges).

Room Tip: Try to ask for a non-corner (meaning at the end of the hallways) room if you plan to use the wifi. I...
