“A very interesting face of Beijing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

I've been living in China for over 4 years, but it was my very first time in Shichahai and I really enjoyed the place!

Get off at North Beihai Metro Station. You are just there!

The 3 lakes ("hai") are located within an area filled with hutongs, a very traditional and ancient housing structure in China. A lot of history, a lot to be seen.

There are rickshaws all over the area, but nothing can be compared to a nice stroll through the alleys, narrow and windy streets, street vendors and dwellers.

A very nice facet of "Old Beijing"!

“Old town Beijin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

Not far from city centre .
Restaurants , bars etc along the lake
We went in the evening in spring . A lot of people .
In the proximity , can access the Hutong village .houses with 2 square stone pillar represent scholars' residence while that with 2 round pillars belongs to warriors . There is no toilet Inside the house , but communal toilet . A small Hutong may accommodate up to 15 families .
Good to know the old part of Beijin

Worth a visit

Being one of the main Beijing attraction during Spring Festival, the frozen lake was crowded with locals and tourists having fun. A great time!

“A charming area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

This area is not very far out of the centre at all, being near the Drum Tower. The lakes are charming and locals themselves like going there. There were locals and foreigners visiting this area. My impression is that there is a lot to be discovered and savoured in Beijing but it takes a few days to get to know it.

“Exploring wisdom of the ancient civilization”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2011

Jiudaowan Hutong in Beijing impresses as much as the Great Wall of China. Here you can have a great time and get an idea of what ancient Beijing looked like. We hired a pedicab which took us along narrow winding lanes, around the lake, into inhabited districts. The driver speaking Pidgin English pointed at some places and commented where we were. He stopped in one place which turned to be a Traditional Courtyard House. The guide explained the principles of its building subject to five elements: water, fire, wood, etc. and four cardinal points. It was a fascinating excursion exploring wisdom of the ancient civilization of the Celestial Empire. Besides, Jiudaowan Hutong has a nice shopping area where you can buy authentic Chinese goods: silk, tea, stones and so on. And restaurants offer really infinite menus; so what to choose for dinner becomes a problem.
