“Hutong or Hidden Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

It was our first stop in China. It will always be a memorable visit. We stayed in a premium garden room – king bed very comfy, spacious room with a real closet (not one of those slither of a closet near the front door), bathrobes and slippers, clean. The bathroom is narrow but a spacious shower, quality amenities.

Our room had a Chinese gate with a lock authentic looking but does not lock, however, we never felt unsure or insecure. The side garden is a very slight narrow area enough to fit a single chair, but added calmness to the entry of our room. Excellent Wi-Fi connection – the best on our entire trip!

Excellent – personal and welcoming service at check-in, breakfast, and check-out. Upon check-in you are provided with a large city/subway map and a cell-phone full charged with the hotel’s number. I was quite charmed by this touch. Indeed, having a cell phone to use gave us extra confidence to explore Beijing on our own, considering friends who discouraged us from not traveling on our own.

On our first evening, we were invited to join in a cheese and wine by Joel in the hotel lobby bar. We walked to and up the drum and bell towers during the day. At night, we explored Hoi Hai. On the second day, walking along the alleys toward the Lama temple, we came across the Confucius temple by chance. What opportunities we enjoyed while at the Orchid.

Breakfasts are good, great choices, great coffee, great service and a warm atmosphere. The breakfast room offers shared tables with other guests and other like-minded travelers. You can easily feel comfortable here.

There are several other restaurants close by on the main road if you leave the hotel.
Upon check-out, the hotel staff tried to call for a taxi for us, after 10 minutes, the co-owner walked with us out to the main road with luggage to flag down a taxi for us. This is going above and beyond!

One thing we did experience on our arrival at night is that the taxi would not drive down the lane way toward the Orchid, instead we were dropped off on the main road and walked the approx. 200m to the hotel entrance.

Still, its easy to recommend a stay at the Orchid especially if you want a personal stay and a cultural location, with modern amenities. A very welcoming atmosphere at this hotel!

We stayed here 5 nights, it's probably one of the best places we have stayed.
All staff members were friendly and helpful, always making sure you have the proper directions/information for your days activities.
The rooms were nice, and the breakfasts even better. If you are leaving early for the airport/or the Great Wall, they will pack you some breakfast to go.
We loved walking around exploring the hutong area where the orchird is located. Lots of places to eat in the area.
Don't hesitate to book this place for your "home" while in Beijing!

We recently returned home from a 1 week stay at the Orchid and have nothing but good things to say about this wonderful oasis in the bustling hutong that is Baochao. Besides the comfortable and quiet accomodation away from the street, top marks have to go to the always attentive and friendly multilingual staff. They were willing to take the time to answer every question we had and if they did not have an answer would check on the internet, use their phones or consult with their colleagues. Breakfast each day was exceptional and they were always willing to mix and match to provide the best meal possible (loved the extra potatoes!) We enjoyed having the two kitties, Noonoo and Doodoo around to provide the lazy vibe. The Orchid staff arranged for us to be taken on a tour of the Great Wall (starting at the Jiankou section) with Joe Zhang, who provided an unforgettable experience for us. Everything that previous guests have raved about has been confirmed and we will gladly stay at the Orchid again, should we return to Beijing!

Room Tip: We had a room just off the main courtyard with our own little patio. We would stay there again.

I stayed in The Orchid from 27 April until 3rd of May and had a wonderful time there. The very friendly staff went out of their way to make me feel comfortable (this included offering me ginger tea because I was suffering from a cold). There was always someone there to answer my questions. I could even get in touch using the phone provided by the hotel, which came in handy when I encountered a problem with an ATM that would not give me any money. I enjoyed an excellent bottle of wine from the Orchid's interesting wine list, which tasted even better because I could savour it on my own roof terrace! It was also great to have Apple TV, although I did not make much use of it as it was a lot more fun to navigate the hutongs on the bicycle lent to me by the hotel. I do not understand why some people had trouble to find the hotel. I walked there from Guloudongdajie subway station after taking the express train from the airport and had no problem finding it, using the hotel's directions.
I hope to be able to stay at the Orchid again, it is a gem!

Room Tip: The Yang room is great when the weather is nice because it has its own private roof terrace overlook...

We booked this hotel for our last night on a two week trip through China. Is was the most expencive one so we had high expectations. To start with there is no sign to indicate the hotel, not even on the spot. When we expressed our amazement about this, the owner said he had more problems to deal with.... Not very professional. The rooms were the smallest of our whole trip. The decoration was nice and the patio and roof terras as wel. The breakfast was included. Because we had to leave very early we dit not want it but we stil had to pay the complete amount. On top the only way to pay by creditcard was by giving coplete personal information qs adress email adress and so on. When we complained, the owner did not appologize but defended his " system" by telling that it was cheaper that way ( remember, the most expencive one of our trip, the smallest and the least frofessional). Trendy is expencive but professionality is priceless....

Room Tip: Take eardops with you

First up, be prepared to take some time to find this place. The taxi driver spent around 30 minutes negotiating the narrow hutong streets and asking all manner of locals until we discovered the narrow entrance. Once inside, you are transported into a haven of calm and any stresses quickly disappear. Lovely comfortable room with a great shower and Apple TV, in case you are not out exploring the city. Friendly, chilled out staff who are more than happy to help out with tours, directions etc. Nice little restuarant to enjoy a few pancakes or Chinese style bacon and egg roll in the morning. Recommended for a stay in Beijing. Oh, don't forget to check out Mr Shi's Dumplings just down the road - heaven on a plate with a cold beer after a day's sightseeing.

This Hotel was a great surprise. The people who work there is amazing, they are always willing to help you with everything (tours, restaurants, medicines, etc). The area where the Hotel is located is a little noisy/dirty but extremely safe.
The rooms are comfortable and modern. They give you fresh fruit, water and cellular phone (complementary). The breakfast is really good (great coffee by the way).
One thing really bad was that I found cockroaches in the bathroom. I shared that problem with the hotel staff and I am sure that they are going to work to solve that problem.
Even with the problem in the bathroom, I would give another chance to his Hotel. People makes the difference, and they have the best.
