“One of the best stays... Unique, cosy, comfortable!”
An overdue but well deserved review for The Orchid. Fully agree that the breakfasts were delicious. In fact, the kitchen was able to customise our breakfast "No bread/tomatoes" and we once asked for breakfast at 11a.m. and the kitchen obligingly prepared that for us! The bed, shower toiletries, Apple TV were all luxuries which made our stay more pleasurable.
We had the courtyard room on the ground floor with a private balcony, with swinging wooden doors as entrance. The entire hotel makes you feel like you are home because of the staff (we met co-owner Joe, got to try their homemade beer and spent the night at the reception/ bar chatting while meeting visitors from other parts of the world). Everyone who works there are friendly, helpful (printed maps for us and gave us directions to find an eatery) yet unintrusive. There are places to lounge - in the reception or outside in the common courtyard and you can even hear the bust going on around hutong - not noisy but you feel you are right in Beijing!
Besides Mr Shi's dumpling, we discovered the spicy hot pot dip just shops down which opens past midnight! They offer one of the best MaLa (hot) dips and we actually took a taxi back from the city centre (we did 2 nights in Hyatt) to have lunch there on our last day!
Dali courtyard, a popular restaurant is just lanes away. We had a nice walk in the evening, starting from the hotel to Dali and crossed the street to Nanluoguxiang after dinner. It was relaxing and just too convenient to get around and always have food stalls around every corner so you won't go hungry!
One tip though, the main road can get jammed up badly on weekends. If you are in a taxi, you are better off memorizing 'Bao Chao Hutong' (where Orchid is), hop off the cab and walk in. This way you enjoy seeing the local scenes and also enjoy the non-city side of Beijing.
