We stayed at the Orchid in September for 4 nights. It is a small delightfully designed and decorated hotel in the heart of a typical Beijing suburbs. You are surrounded by the bustling environment of a Beijing hutong, yet are able to retreat into peaceful surrounding.
The staff are very hospitable and knowledgeable, and are ready and able to make bookings for you, have meals brought in from Mr Shi's Dumpling House and give general advice on what to do and what to look out for. To my surprise I was able to get a sparkling shiraz from their cellar - a feat not always possible in Australia.
Our guide for the tour of the Forbidden City was absolutely fantastic (Johnson ys2974@yahoo.com.cn).
If you need a place to stay where all the worry of arranging tours meals etc is taken out of your hands, then this is the place
