It is next door to Forbidden City, it was built in the same time actually. Don't judge it by its name.
I went there in a Saturday morning. It is peaceful like all the Chinese parks and gardens.
But be prepared for half of the brides of Beijing. It seems that everybody comes here to take the photos for the wedding. Especially on the stairs of the palace, you must be lucky not to ruin somebody's pictures with your presence.
Anyway, the great hall is immense and gives you a peaceful, majestic feeling, worth getting there - if not killed by grooms or photographers :)
10RMB is the entrance fee, if you have time give it a chance. Don't try to see it in the same day with Forbidden city. You just can't, believe me.
