“Beautiful but.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

Palace gardens are normally pretty amazing and this one was no exception. The last stop you come to at the Palace museum (aka the Forbidden City) is the imperial garden.
It's very beautifully laid out, ponds, flowers, shrubs, buildings etc it has it all. Unfortunately it also has far too many people. You can't even stand on the walkway without being knocked or barged out the way.
It is a lovely garden but personally I think they should restrict access to a certain amount of people at any one time, so you can enjoy the calming nature and the peacefulness which was intended with such a beautiful space.

“This is the most crowded”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

and least impressive part of the Forbidden City aka Palace Museum (see that listing instead), but it is the last venue before the northern exit and you can simply walk through the crowds and exit. The two parks which flank the southern entrance to the Forbidden City are far far nicer -- Zhonshan Park and Workers Cultural Palace Park.

“A real beautiful garden kind of small though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

Definitely a nice place to walk in when it's not crowded.

If you are looking for tour guides to take you to the great wall they all seem to be hiding here ready to jump on you like ravage wolves.

Some of them are con artist so I would take caution while dealing with them.

But some of them are generally trying to do business there and will be much cheaper even though it looks kind of shady than a travel agency you find online.

The garden has a wide variety of trees and the best thing to look at is the stone formation near the very back of the garden.

Summary-
Squatter bathrooms
Beware of people trying to bring you on their tour.
Kind of small and crowded during the tourist season.

“One of the most beautiful parts of the Forbidden City!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

You expect grand and ornate...these gardens, however, are small and intimate full of unusual old trees, lovely blooms and a very peaceful ambiance. It is cool and shady even in the summer (we visited in May so it wasn't too intense yet) and you truly felt that you were stepping back in time. I loved looking at the ornate roofs of the buildings....the more little statues on the roof, the higher the status of the people who used that building! The entire Forbidden City was spectacular, but the Imperial Garden was one of the highlights.

“A great stroll around the grounds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Lots to see and appreciate, from the unique and ornate stylings to the fantastic engineering and architecture. Worth the time, although can be a little overcrowded.
